Compact film cameras are a great way to shoot some film, but which one to choose? Check out this guide to five of my favourite compact film cameras from the 50s to the 80s, to help you decide.
Some are completely manual, some have auto exposure and one has auto everything! They all have excellent lenses and they start from around £20, so many are very inexpensive.
This week's cameras are:
- Olympus Pen EES Half Frame
- Olympus Trip 35
- Kodak Retinette 1A
- Konica C35 Rangefinder
- Nikon L35 AF
Enjoy!

To the above list, I would add a less known but wonderful camera: Agfa Optima 1035 Sensor. 1: Huge viewfinder. 2: An ingenious way to wind the film. 3: Sensational, ultra-sharp lens. 4: Snapshot with a time range of 16 seconds (!!!), to 1/1000 of a second and that's all fully automatic. 5: Small size and weight. 6: Great workmanship. 7: A special Agfa designed "soft" trigger system.

I just watched another video from one of my other subscribed KZfaq channels. I immediately searched for your latest video and noticed a major difference between your channel and several others: You focus on mostly affordable and reasonable camera options. Out of the 9 cameras this other channel just showcased, 8 of them were either Leica, Voightlander, or the Nikon SP…only one of them (the Nikon FG) was affordable for us average guys. And then I watched this video-all reasonable options for the average viewer. Reason #14 why you’re at the top of my list of favorite channels. Thanks Nigel!

@@zenography7923 Most photography channels rely on the use of shiny objects and presentation. They use colorful and nifty looking backdrops and props; they focus on showcasing the latest gear on the market; they use frills and gimmicks; or they’re constantly trying to sell us something. At best, some are good but focus on gear that is too expensive to justify purchasing except by very successful full time photographers. Those things all have their time and place I guess but what drives me to your channel is a certain eloquence in its simplicity. You project a profound and infectious passion for photography and speak in digestible terms and pace that is both relaxing and inspiring. It’s as if you’re a friend next door and you drop in every Sunday for coffee and a chat about photography without frills or gimmicks or personal agendas. I read a lot of comments from others that essentially say these same things so I know my view is shared by many others on here.

Add in the Yashica 1, 2, 3, 5 and Minister, the Ricoh 35R rangefinder, the Minolta Hi-matic 7 and lots more. I started adding point and shoot/compact 35mm cameras to my collection about a year ago, I have come acrodd some real beauties for virtually no money. A great topic again, Nigel, film photography is having a resurgence, and any of these cameras will encourage more people to either go back to film or give it a try for the first time.

Hi Nigel, great review of point&shoots. So sad, to see your Konica C35 being broken (24:04 : aperture blades are opening irregulary and are sticky). I have the Olympus mju zoom which is a point-and-shoot-later camera, since it starts autofocussing _after_ the shutter button was pressed down. It does not shoot half formatted images, but it always shoots half portraits of only half childrens, half dogs or other moving objects. Everybody already left the scene when the shutter finally gets opened...

Nice cameras. I'd really like to give one of those half frame cameras a try. I'll have to keep an eye out for one. While I've seen those cameras around over the years, I never knew that about them. Except for very first camera that I had as a boy, which was medium format, I've always shot with full frame 35mm. On my morning photo walks, I tend to shoot between 40-80 pictures so the increased shot size would be perfect for that.

Very nice review, you're back on track here, away from these new chinese stuff. I don't have the Pen, but if you find a russian Chaika - half frame with Industar lens - it's got tons of charm, and is great fun to use, probably inexpensive too. Somewhere between the Trip35 and the Konica 35 is the Konica EE, great little 60's auto exposure camera. The Kodak retina is great fun to use, Zeiss Ikon Contina is an excellent alternative. I picked up a Nikon L35af this summer for £5, it has the same problem as the Olympus mju, good cameras, but I find them quit boring to use actually, I might as well shoot digital instead, and save the money for the film, they're simply not my cup of coffee. But that's part of what makes photography so interesting, all of the differences and aspects.

Regarding selenium meters: as long as there is no lens-cap on them, they will be active (all the time). So best selenium metered cameras are the ones that come in their carry-cases or with a cap on so the seleniummeters have been most of the time in the dark (and thus in-active) Loved halfframe at the time, and whenever I would go out on a photography holiday with my Pentax slrs, I always carried a halfframe Olympus with me, loaded with slide film! Started with the little EE's but in the end wound up with the fabulous Pen EED with excellent F.Zuiko f1.7 32mm lens. Used that for my 'holiday snaps'. The slides out of this camera were excellent. Two other walk-around cameras I would like to 'promote' are the Olympus XA and XA4. The XA is a tiny 'capsule' camera with a f2.8 35mm lens, aperture priority AND a range-finder, all in a very compact body. The XA4 has the same 'capsule' body but comes with a f3.5 28mm lens that can (manually) focus down to 30 cm. Both super portable. Not sure how easy it will be to get appropriate batteries for these. BTW: being able to source appropriate batteries can be a problem for more/other older cameras; something to check before you buy!!

In Ex-USSR Zenit cameras are hard to beat. The quality can by iffy but it is fairly easy to find a working specimen. Cameras with lens in good condition can cost ~20 bucks. Body without lens can be found nearly for free for mass-produced models (like Zenit E or Zenit ET). For Zenit E it is around 2 bucks per body (which usually even functions!), which is due to extensive "poaching". By poaching I mean mass-buying of cameras and selling the lenses to swirling bokeh fans (who use Helios lenses with modern cameras). The demand for bodies is much lower. So those are usually sold in-bulk for almost nothing. Spare parts are effectively free (if you bother to repairing rather than just switch the body for a working one). Of soviet film cameras I myself prefer Zorki/FED due to my eyesight issues. Rangefinder makes these cameras much easier to use. And Zenits are kind of notorious for their dark and small SLR viewfinder. Zorki cameras are not as common but just as inexpensive and are not hard to find in working order too.
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 2 жыл бұрын
I have a soft spot for the Zenit cameras purely on account of their simple, rugged nature, but I might actually use one more often if, like almost every other SLR I can think of, they had a split image in the centre of the viewfinder! I too like the Zorki/Fed rangefinders, particular favourites being the Fed/Zorki 1 (a surprisingly good Leica 2 copy), the first version Fed 3 with the towers and turrets, the Zorki 3 (probably my favourite of all), the Zorki 4K and the Fed 4 - particularly easy to use with its built in light meter! Plenty to enjoy, hopefully for some time to come!

I can't say I'd recommend cameras which need a built in Selenium metering cell because of their very high failure rate and fragile nature. If I recall correctly; these types usually have no manual override where you could use an external meter. While I loved the half frame cameras back when; I would imagine it is very hard to find someone to print them these days; you'd likely have to digitize the images? Ideally I agree they can make lovely photos but surely there are some easier more reliable alternatives? I'd give starting photographers a warning that these can be flaky - literally.
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard that selenium meters are unreliable over the long term, but I've never found that. I've got several lying around, many in Fed 4 cameras and out of 20 or 30, only one has failed! Maybe I've been lucky?
@BlondieSuperdog
@BlondieSuperdog 2 жыл бұрын
@@zenography7923 OK, however if you randomly buy 20 of those Olympus cameras, or say the Kodak Retina III Cs; I'm afraid you'll find that most are not working and this is nearly always because the selenium crystals are very thin and fragile. Take one apart if you don't believe me on that. Now it wouldn't matter much if you could revert to a hand held meter and the camera could be made to function manually but when the meter is integrated into the exposure control it becomes non functional without a work around. I would want worn a perspective buyer to check that functionality and handle the camera deftly if they buy one. Certainly if they find a working one they can do a great job.
@tutzdesYT

@@zenography7923 I own 3 selenium meter cameras. In two of those meters are dead. One camera has a working meter but it needs exposure compensation of ~1stop. Even if it doesn't completely fail, this kind of meters tends to degrade over time. Battery powered TTL-meters and cameras with these are more robust in this regard. I own an almost 40-years old camera and its TTL-meter is still pretty accurate.

@@tutzdesYT Like an old light meter, one could charge up these old cells by exposing them to strong light for a while.

@@sclogse1 selenium cells degrade from exposure to light. So, when the meter is dead the only thing you can do is to replace the cell. You can only slow down the process by keeping the element in a dark place when not in use. Exposing the element to the strong light may make the electrical current powerful enough to unstuck the needle but it won't revive the degraded chemicals.
