note. Normally when girls are sold to the palace by their parents they enter a 2 to 4 year contract to work as maid. IN exchange these maids get paid money to send back to their family. When 2 years is up, the maids leave the palace. The thing with Maomao is she was kidnapped an illegally sold to the palace against imperial law. So the kidnappers are lying to the imperial court that they are Maomao's relatives and defrauding the imperial palace of money. Unfortunately they can not be punished once the contract has been signed as poor commoners do not have any form of identification and signed contracts serve identity. So it's legally binding. Maomao seems to be raised in a poor town where she didn't work as a merchant or shop keeper to have a form of identity. Also this is pure speculation but another interesting thing to note is why she wasn't kidnapped and sold as a slave to a foreign country. IF that was done, the kidnappers would only get a one time payout. By selling her to the palace the kidnappers can get a steady income from defrauding the palace for 2 years until Maomao's contract has ended.

For an additional bit of context that gets touched upon later in the story. It's not any kind of spoilers and I don't know if they'll explain it later on, but in case you don't want to know... Kidnapping is, actually, outlawed in this story. However selling your child to servitude is still allowed, and as a result the family gets a cut of the pay. What the kidnappers do is they kidnap girls and pretend to be parents selling off their children.

They didn't pretend to be the parents. The palace gets its serving girls from slave traders who go around and collect them from parents who sell off their kids. It's actually impossible for peasants to sell their kids directly into the palace. No peasant has that kind of connection. Only connected nobles could directly offer up their daughters as ladies-in-waiting. For the servant girls, the slave traders act as middlemen. That's also why they continue to get part of the girls' pay. They put down an investment by buying the girl from her parents, then the girl pays back this investment over the period of her contract and possibly beyond if there are residuals remaining (in which case they're usually sold off to a brothel). The kidnappers either pretended to be "proper" slave traders or are actually connected slave traders with prior track record themselves. Kidnapping a girl means they don't need to put down that initial investment of buying the girl from her parents.

What the lady did with the vase is so damn smart. "We will have to charge the family" meaning theyll pin the debt on the kidnappers that pretended to be her fam, and the hazard pay is the real pay. MMM i love characters that use their cunning to the best of their abilities to do good for others.

Yep. You can track the chocolate bread slices all the way through. 9 slices were made. Each maid ate 1, leaving 6. when he started flirting, there were still 4 in one row 2 in another. When he left, there were 5, 1 row of 4, and a lone slice in front.

Another similar series to this one that you guys might like would be 'The Raven consort'. Think ya'll might enjoy stuff like 'Houseki no Kuni' and other psychological series as well. Loving your reactions to this series, it really doesn't seem to hold back from touching upon very mature topics and such. Maomao's also absolutely adorable! lol

As a note: Part of the money Maoamao gets paid is not sent to her family but to the kidnappers who said they where her family. as they would have said she was their daughter and they palace dosent really care (as in the people who bought her some people probably care that people are being kidnapped and sold to the palace but probably not that much.)

Officially, it’s illegal. But people with influential ties, or large enough bribes (usually both), can get certain officials to look the other way. Those who do care usually either don’t have enough clout to do anything about it, or no way to find the ones responsible without kicking a hornet’s nest.

If tou guys wanna understand how it works in forbidden kingdom/Palace chinese era....Highly recommend to watch chinese drama traditional era....The rule and tradition are more strict than those korea and japanese era.

In addition to those three types of eunuch there are also drugs that can make you infertile either temporarily ir permanently. But also if the emperor trusts you and you're already married and absolutely smitten with your wife you can just be a "Eunuch" in name.

So I just had to look it up. Below is a line from a quick wiki search on eunuchs. (Hidden in case it´s an uncomfortable topic.) - - - - - "In China, castration included removal of the "tool" as well as the "package" (see emasculation). Both organs were cut off with a knife at the same time." (edited for censor) So from this I take that normally, eunuchs only had the "package" removed, and kept the "tool", except for China. But this story is based in *fictional* China, so probably no more fun for the eunuchs. (They got the Ken treatment.)

Wiki is incorrect. Chinese eunuchs came in both sackless-only and Kendoll versions UNTIL THE QING DYNASTY. The problem is that modern popular understanding of Chinese eunuchs came from autobiographies and memoirs of the last eunuchs of the Qing Dynasty, for which we have not only writings but actual physical evidence and even video recordings. However, records from previous dynasties show clearly that both types of eunuchs served in the rear palace. In particular, men turned into eunuchs after sexual maturity were often only de-sacked because they rarely survived the Ken treatment with the (lack of) medical knowledge of the era.

The best part about that lady doing that after finding out that she was actually kidnapped and sold there without anyone knowing is the fact that she not only freed her, but also got pay back on her kidnappers by making them have to pay for something expensive. In ancient days, it was considered an honour to be of service to the emperor or his concubines in that way. So for them, it's a grand reward or honour to be "promoted" into a position like that. 🤷🏻‍♀

In those days, the life expectancy of a commoner wasn't all that high anyway, so most people in Mao Mao's position would actually consider her new position to be a reward. They also offered her the position after learning about her past as an apothecary, so it's not like they didn't know she'd probably be able to detect most poisons. The entire reason she had come to their attention in the first place was because she detected poison where nobody else did after all.

If you are really curious Chinese eunuchs are the Ken type..... The last dynasty ended in 1912, so the last of last eunuchs survived well into the later part of the 20th century, there's ample testimonies, and interviews.

They became the Ken type in the Qing Dynasty because during the Ming there was a famous case of a eunuch who became the palace gigolo. He was castrated as an adult so already had all the mature sexual characteristics and apparently he could last forever because eunuchs can't really come. Make 'em all Ken was the solution.

I agree that one of the appeals to this series is there are few like it. Same thing could be said of Raven of the Inner Palace, another Chinese Dynasty-era series with similar vibes (but less funny) that was airing this time last year. That - and Maomao and Raven are both such likable characters.

It's mentioned in episode 1 that eunuchs are not the only men in the rear palace, so it's possible that Jinshi is one of those. That's my guess - I haven't read the manga or anything.

I will not spoil anything but jinshi ( the pretty dude) is one of those characters that there are more than meets the eye to him. He’s the manager\ head of the rear palace. He watch’s over the concubines and all the servant girls. He also is there for the emperor to test the loyalty of the concubines and the servants. A concubine shouldn’t Just be beautiful and knowledgeable but loyal to the emperor himself. Men are forbidden to enter the rear palace unless they are the emperor, his kin or the eunuchs that serves as guides for the rear palace.
