Some people take the Bible literally. Dr. Shabir Ally says that when it comes to the promise of the land to the ancient Israelites, it does not seem that this should be taken literally today. In the first place, it is clear from the Bible that when then promise was made, the land already belonged to the Canaanites. That’s why it is called the land of Canaan. It seems odd that God would have give the green light to the ancient Israelites to wipe out the Canaanites and all the other nations who occupied that broad swath of the globe and take over their land. Moreover, in modern times this is also problematic on two scores. First, the land is said to spread from the Nile to the Euphrates. Those who take the Bible literally today may want to claim the entire swath of land wherein is found many countries spanning from the Gulf countries to Iraq. But taking this claim literally will certainly pit Israel against all of these modern countries. Second, even if we narrow down the claim to the land of Palestine, an ancient scripture is hardly the document based on which to settle a modern land claim.
