Hi John, you have an amazing and very soothing voice, thoroughly enjoy listening & watching your vids! Will be visiting Japan for the first in November, it’s been on the top of my bucket list for the longest time. SUPER EXCITED!!! I’m best to purchase my JR pass in September to get it at the current price!? So it’s ok to activate in November with no additional costs is that right? Looking forward to hearing from you. Hugs from Australia 🤗

Spent my weekend in Hakone and it’s so sweet to see families traveling around together. Maybe I got lucky or maybe the places I hit weren’t hot spots but there weren’t many crowds where I went. I’m back in my apartment now near Tokyo so let’s see how the rest of it goes 😅

It is likely that the following areas will be extremely crowded due to overtourism, especially since Japan's consecutive holidays will overlap for the past week. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Hokkaido,Kanagawa, Shizuoka and some famous tour spots. If you would enjoy traveling in Japan, we recommend the Tohoku region. In particular, Yamagata is close to Tokyo and Sendai, and there are relatively few people, so you can spend a comfortable time there. Transportations will be crowded everywhere. It's best to go early in the morning or later in the evening.

@Peter Hung There are seasonal events in Japan, and certainly in the summer, there are summer festivals and fireworks displays. Festivals in the Tohoku area are held in August and are especially famous in Japan. I 'd like foreign tourists could enjoy those events. The Hanagasa dance of Yamagata was also showed in the Japan Parade in New York.

Thanks for your great information! We arrive on May 8th so I’m happy to hear about the lifting of the border restrictions! 😅 We went to Japan during Obon 5 years ago because my sons wanted to go to the Pokémon parade, etc. in Yokohama. It was crowded, but not horrible. We stayed very close to Haneda airport so it was a quiet spot to return to at night.

I will then use your more comprehensive list to include avoiding Silver Week since my planned future visits will probably be during Spring and Autumn. The only caveat would be if I opt to make a trip during Obon (Summer) to visit with Family in Hiroshima to visit haka. Thank You! Best to Hanae (second cousin's name too!), Leo and you.🙏

Hey! Please share your experience! Im going at the 26th of April and stay in Kyoto exactly in golden week and the Internet is great at scaring me 😅 I was in Japan a few years ago and on a saturday the famous spots did not look that much different to what you see in the Videos about golden week. But i am so disappointed about my booking „skills“ going that week 🥲

Actually I had the best time ever! Yes it was sort of crowded but really, if you are going to any of the Golden Triangle, I'm assuming it will be crowded no matter when! 😅 I was also in Yokohama and Tokyo, actually I was in Ginza on 5/5 and it really wasn't too bad? Waited for about 30 minutes in line to eat lunch at a restaurant 😋 which was inside a building with all the famous high end luxury stores! I think you will be fine and don't let the internet scare you! We all have lives and can't just go to Japan anytime we want and I don't regret going in May (4/30-5/21 to be exact)! I'll be going again this year but in November ❤ Have fun!!! Japan is amazing and great... no matter when 😊💕🇯🇵🌈

OK just took a look again at my intenerary and I was in Yokohama Sakuragicho on 5/3, Ginza on 5/4 and in Toyosu on 5/5! Again, it was crowded but nothing you can't handle so please don't worry! And also, if you can, stay at the Tokyo LA Vista Bay Hotel which is really close to Ginza and Toyosu area! I watched as they were constructioning the new Senkyaku Banrai which is now open! I saw it from my hotel window! I did visit the Golden Triangle but that was the following week. Again still crowded but had the best time ever! Just enjoy, eat, drink and have a blast! 💕🇯🇵💓❤️🌈

Thank you so much for your response! Yes, I think we‘ll just go with the flow. As long as we got our pre booked accomodations we should be fine :) We just have to check the opening times for the things i want to do, if they are closed down on specific days :) And to be honest, „crowded“ is such a bad word for something that’s kind of normal in countrys like Japan and also kind of part of the culture. Maybe the golden week will offer some opportunities, like to be part of events or meet new people, which many tourists don’t get who avoid these days on purpose. I am so excited 🥹 The best memories i got from Japan were the small hidden Shops and little Restaurants, anyway. The ones far away from the busy places ☺️ I wish you a fantastic time in Japan later this year! 🥰 …and maybe i will come back to this comment and Share my experiences, when i am back home in may 😊🇯🇵

Of the four holidays now included, only the May 5th Boy's Day were widely celebrated with some of the others having their origin as recently as 2007. Mystery solved.

Sorry Dale, the screen darkened with the warmth in the phone, I had to squint to see it. It was big when I arrived in 1998. I believe it probably got big when the Heisei period started in 1989? Perhaps during the bubble? The govt really tried to join the holidays ti he there to boost the economy. It does work but a lot of people LEAVE Japan 😂 and the tourism boom from 2014 brought a lot of people into Japan (3 years after the tsunami & quake and fears subsided).

Not entirely true, prices go up everywhere. Tokyoites leave and - go home. The highways are clogged for sometimes over 100 miles, it’s legendary! Just depends, get out early, come back late :) or stay out there! But it’s quite busy everywhere. Tohoku has the cherry blossoms (usually) hanging on, Sapporo is starting. The weather is lively in Kyushu and Shikoku is warming up nicely. Sea is stunning, longer days. Hiking trails are much much busier than usual.

Although the Japanese govnt would obviously disagree-I think let the Japanese enjoy their 1st basically unrestricted holiday without the added congestion of foreigners. It has always been crowded especially the trains and airports with people going to visit family or going abroad from the airports.

Population decline means there are less enjoying it now than 1990 so the “foreigners” are highly appreciated by Japanese business! Not just the travelers are Japanese, there’s also another side to tourist ;)

Japanese people have designated “holidays”. Tourists can come anytime. I was just referring to Golden Week THIS year! I know that Japan benefits from tourism as do other countries. That’s obviously why the proof of vaccination is not required anymore.

I never want to go back anyway. The amount of tourists there now makes it feel like a second Thailand. Unfortunate.. but I guess that's how it is.

Just stay off the major "tourist cities" like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and you're fine. Almost zero tourists. In December I was in Kanazawa, Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Fukuoka. Every time I saw a foreigner I was actually surprised 😂. Currently I'm on a trip again. Been to Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, Hiroshima, Kure, Iwakuni, Hofu, Yamaguchi, Shimonoseki and am currently in Kitakyushu. Really rare to see a foreigner.... Apart from the major attractions in Hiroshima. I've had a stretch of 5 days or so where I didn't see even one foreigner 😂

This was a completely irresponsible headline, and aligns with one of the reasons I AVOID YOUR VIDEOS. I just couldn't let this one pass. Yes, Japan overall is busy during Golden Week, but not every spot is Japan is "busting at the seams" with tourists. Some places are crowded, but the most popular locations are usually full of tourists year round, irrespective of seasonal events (like special festivals). And many Japanese travel abroad at this time, such as to Hawaii, Taiwan, Thailand, etc. I have been in Japan for 2 and 1/2 months on a 1 year visa since mid-February this year. It's a trip that was postponed when Japan closed her borders in April 2020, three days before my flight from the US. On average, I have visited Japan about once a year (excluding the pandemic lockdown) since my grandfather showed me the country in early childhood. I studied Japanese for my foreign language requirement in secondary school and university, and spent a significant amount of time learning about her history. So as a retired psychologist, I am now finishing up the last remaining major item on my bucket by residing in Japan for at least a year, and discovering as much of the aspects of the country - culture, people, customs, etc., that I could not glean from visits on a "visa free" 90 day entry that American tourists typically use. Golden week is from April, 29th to May 5th. It ends on Tango no Sekku (old name for Boys Day) or Kodomo no Hi (new name for Children's Day). So to basically claim that everything is just too crowded, especially when it is only the first day (April 29th) of Golden Week, is quite presumptuous. Plus, I have been out since early morning at the gym, train station, grocery stores, dry cleaner, stationary store, etc., and everything seems like a normal Saturday. I actually was disappointed that it really wasn't any different from other Saturdays. I strongly suggest that over exaggerated headlines be avoided. After all, the US is still dealing with the aftermath of President number 45, who over embellished to the point of outright lying. And who by the way, deserves all the pain and agony that the American legal system should be dumping on him for his ignominious crimes.

Thank you. I'm thinking the same and avoid Johns videos as much as possible. I don't think he is doing it on purpose, it seems it's just his thing to over exaggerate especially in the title. Was in Japan during Golden Week 2019 and I didn't notice any crowding compared to the two weeks before. It was more difficult to get the desired seat reservation and free lockers in Kanazawa were non existend. But other than that I had the impression Tokyo itself was less crowded compared to when we were there two weeks prior. There was a long line at Skytree, but we had pre booked tickets. Tokyo was very much enjoyable during Golden Week.
