I’m not buyin’ it. Ogres are dumb melee brutes Nothics are ranged intelligent minor bosses. Type to type? Minotaur Skeletons. Gnolls pack Lord Orog Quaggoth The list goes on. Type to type, these match. And each one has a completely different culture or dynamic.

I was looking for something more interesting to put in White Plume Mountain to replace the ogre and bugbear random encounters. The idea of nothics being attracted to a mad wizard’s dungeon rings true to me.

Nothics after reading the lore is so cool. I can see so many ways of them being used, such as being offered a way to break the arcane knowledge that cursed them even aiding the party against an aboleth or Old God's avatar to end their twisted life.

I like the Azer, because it lets a Conjurer summon another kind of low CR Elemental. Because, let's face it, there aren't a lot of options for that, especially if we're talking about Conjure Minor Elemental. If not for the Azer, you'd mostly just be conjuring Mephits...and that's about it. Mephits were made to fill that quota, basically. But there aren't a lot of other options besides them or Magmin. At least in the regular Monster Manual.

Just ran a bunch of sessions with ogres in my own game. This is a great video for us. Also I always appreciate when I can have the volume turned up and the intro music isn't crazy loud. Cheers for sound equalization. -JACali27 of DudeNoWay

If you're looking for something to be a guardian in a specific area (courtyard, throne room, statuary, garden, etc.) and be a possible replacement for an Ogre, I'd vote for the Gargoyle. It does a little less damage than the ogre, but it has comparable hit points, higher armor class, and resistance to the common melee weapons. You're not going to drop one with a melee party quickly. On top of that, it's damn hard to detect when it isn't moving and it has a fly speed of 60 feet, so you're probably not going to be able to run away too easily.

I am enjoying this series so far. One suggestion to make the alternate suggestions more useful and applicable would be to make sure they fill the same niche in the game. So, if you are finding alternatives to ogres, make sure they are something that while it may not play identical to an ogre, plays in the same "slot" as an ogre does when designing encounters.

Oooo them fiery dwarfs riding salamanders! Alittle higher level of an encounter but it could work for higher level parties. Also the one with the true sight. Having a character always in an illusionary disguise now he's shown. Maybe even the party doesn't know? Role play! Bring on the teifling whos extra demonic or devilish looking with a ring of disguise self who's in the party now shown! All kinds of things can happen.

Velteen Hesadore an Erinyes devil or Nalfeshnee Demon. Each would be cult icons, both are smart, both are dangerous

Well I usually go with undead, so why use an ogre when you can use a *zombie* ogre? the minotaur skeleton is a cr2 (whereas the zombie ogre is like a cr5), so that's a good replacement for an ogre and doubles as the enforcer. if you want body guards, I might use gargoyles. they have the same hp as ogres but have an ac of 15, plus they have that whole statue thing going on...an orog is always an interesting mess to have in your game. lots of options out there.

I was thinking Minotaur skeleton and Gargoyle too. I like that they chose some weirder ones though. Don't think a DM has ever thrown an Azer at me.

You could choose to use a Huckabee Sanders instead of an ogre. The stats remain the same except Charisma is only 3 and the Huckabee Sanders is fatter.

Don't use ogers. Use ogrillion. Up to 8' tall, greenish brown skin, bulging muscles, big nose, wide mouth, big pointy teeth. The description can fit many monsters which gives metagamers fits. And stats? Check this out: STR 17 +3 DEX 10 0 CON 14 +2 INT 07 -2 WIS 09 -1 CHA 10 0 AC 12 (seems like a one shot, doens't it?) HP 48 (at max) Dark vision to 60' Battleaxe Atk +5 Dam rolls out at 5, 11, 12, 6, 13, 7, 8, 10, 14, 9, 19 Javelin Atk +5 Dam rolls out at 6, 9, 11, 13, 5, 14, 10, 12, 15, 7, 8 Not a big challange? Only a CR 1? Their boss can give them better or magically enhanced armor (or rings of blink, maybe?) and put them under the command of a magic user that can cast a few buffs to boost their attacks. Now the P.C.'s have a fun problem, an interesting encounter, a non-cookie cutter fight, a cool plot hook and some interesting loots.

In 2e, I’d never replace ogres. They’re big and slow on initiative. They have a distinct smell (curdled milk), so they have -1 penalty to surprise the party. And they always have gems, so the payoff is really high for rogues, who gain 2xp per gp value of treasure.

yeah i dont buy the nothic personally. doesnt feel like an equal swap at all. goes from a melee brute to a intelligent creature. Azor i can kind of see though.
