Don't use the quotient rule, use logarithmic differentiation. We will first let y=sqrt((x-1)/(x^4+1)) and then take the natural log both sides. Then we can use implicit differentiation. : )

I was wondering whether or not this was just leading to a joke or something... But I guess he just couldn't be bothered to do the editing. Or am I missing something? New to the channel.

My maths professor taught us the quotient rule, then immediately said "I don't use it though; it's ugly".

I just take the denominator, raise it to the -1 power, and use the product and chain rules. I don't have to worry about order that way.

No quotient rule? Cool, I'll make it (x-1)(x^4+1)^-1 then ill use the product rule.

.. or just square, cross-multiply and get y²(x⁴+1)=x-1 and differentiate! 2yy'(x⁴+1)+4x³y²=1 and the rest is fraction arithmetic.

I never use the quotient rule. I just write f(x)/g(x) as f(x)g(x)^(-1) and differentiate using the product rule. In this case, I probably would've squared first

You're basically still doing the quotient rule, just in an indirect way.

I had totally forgotten about differentiating ln where you have to multiply by the derivative of the bracket, I also would have written it as 1/2ln(x-1)-(x^4 +1) which is probably wrong. Great video as always :)

Isn't it problematic to turn y = √(...) into lny = ln(√(...)), since y could originally be equal to zero, and now it can't?
