Having tried ring flash, off-camera flash and various DIY diffusion systems, I have realised that a good speedlite and diffuser is the most convenient and reliable system to use when in the field. Having multiple flash heads, or ring lights is hard to effectively diffuse, but more importantly, when dealing with live subjects the extra time needed for configuring and setting up flash position can mean missing the shot. You can add plenty of depth to your shots with a well-diffused single flash simple by varying your exposure and flash power.

Good film. I use a diffuser attached to the lens and to the flash. This is good lighting for macro photography. Greetings from Poland with Cracow

As you use a Nikon, why not look at the The Nikon R1C1 Close-Up Speedlight Commander Kit - Can be used on or off the camera - TTL or Manual - excellent kit

Recently got my KX-800. Fantastic for wide-angle macro.

I think it's great, and as you say it is flexible enough to also work with wide angle macro. I think some other flash systems would struggle with that :-)

Hi! I use the Godox setup you mention - 2x MF12 K2 + Xpro and I love it, the only frustratic thing with this setup is mounting/unmounting this holder ring on adapter ring screwed to the filter thread. Big prop is wireless connection and excellent build quality. It works great with my Nikon Z6II. I bought a Popeshield diffuser for this and now it is even better :)

Thanks for your thoughts about the MF12 K2. I've heard that the flash sometimes rotates down to the bottom of the mount unintentionally. Do you have any issues with that?

@@peterbredahldamI had one time, with some very old lens which had rotating front element during zooming - flash was to heavy and it just rotates this element. With modern lenses like Nikkor and Laowa I have no issues at all.

Exact same set up as me even down to the popeshield diffuser. I have just started using it with my new Z 105mm MC s lens and it's a superb combo.

Thanks for the feedback. The small diffusers on the twin flash heads are the original you cash get with Venus kx-800 flash. The other lens mounted one is just a cheap one I cut a hole into.

Hi Derrick, It is the Edelkrone FlextTilt Head and StandOne. I originally bought them for video, but they work well for photography as well, and are very sturdy. However, they are also quite expensive. You might find some cheaper options, but I don't know anything about load capacity for those.

I agree that a good flash system is almost a necessity (maybe not in some cases with strong natural daylight) for shooting moving macro subjects - insects, moving blooms in wind etc. But what do you think about portable LED lamps for shooting static or slower subjects, like fungi or slow beetles? They usually provide other colour options and you can reposition them quite easily for better light compositions.

LED lamps are great, because what you're see is what you get. Especially for beginners this is helpful. Also you can get more create with LEDs if you want to. But as you say they are best for slow moving subjects which is why I often don't use them. Because I am most used to flash this is what I use per default, even though a LED could do the trick just as well in many cases.

So first thing you say is that the built in flash is useless ! Then you mount an external flash on the camera, in more or less the same position as the built in flash, but put a diffuser on the lens. Why not use the diffuser for the onboard flash ? Yes it is pretty useless, but if it's all you've got, it's pretty good ! sorry, stopped the video there, and gave it a thumbs down ! Why not try different things with the onboard, tell people what they can do if that's all they've got, instead of just saying it's useless. OH and if you bought a decent camera, you wouldn't have the built in flash, why not say the camera is rubbish and have done with it !

Hehe, that's alright. The position of the built in flash is fixed, whereas an external flash is flexible. You can mount it on the camera but you can also use it in other positions, as I mention on the video. Also the external flash also has its downsides as I explain. So I guess you will have to watch the entire video to see the optiomal system. I have to build the video up from the statement that the internal flash is useful. But if you just stop right after that I can understand that you don't get the point which is explained later.
