Should you buy the 14 or the 16” MacBook Pro? Should you go with the M1 Pro or the M1 Max? What if I told you that even though the 14 and the 16” can be spec’ed out with the same chip, there is an actual difference in how they manage sustained performance?
Ever since I published my first video about these two laptops, I have been getting the same questions over and over again - should I get the 14 or the 16? Is the 16 too big? Are they worth the money? What’s the right combination of specs? And those are all good questions.
There was one unexpected result when I tested performance; I have the base models of both for right now, I also have the fully spec’d-out versions on the way, so you’ll see some comparisons very soon.

I have the base 16" and I'm very happy thus far... I chose it over the 14" for the screen and battery but hoped for better thermals for longevity and slightly better sound, both of which turned out to be correct based upon your reviews (I've watched all of them). What I have to say is that your content on these new models has been phenomenal! Some of the reviewers are spending 30+ min with less information than what you are packing into 12 to 13, thank you for that and keep up the great work!

One thing I'd like to see, though, is the video segments split and labeled into the different sections you're talking about. Other KZfaqrs have started to do this, and have been extremely helpful. Thanks for the great video. I have been trying to decide between 14” and 16” Mac Pro’s. My current laptop is a 10 year old 15” Dell latitude. Overall dimensions is 15”x 10.25” and weighs almost 7lbs. So with the 16” screen, overall it still is smaller and lighter and I get a bigger screen. So a win win. 🤣

Thanks for this great comparison review! I am a big MBP fan. I haven’t upgraded or bought a new MBP since my first MBP 2012. It is still working fine up to this day except for its “zero” key and touchpad which has some “touch” issue (i can no longer use it to drag files to or from folder to folder). Other than these 2 issues, my love for it has not diminished since the first time I used it in 2013. ☺️ Now I am off to buying my new MBP 2021. 😃

Good review. A huge chunk of deciding 14" vs 16 "is very dependent on what kind of work you do and how you do it. If you're a freelance animator or motion graphics artist who travels a lot then a 16" screen will be an absolute god send. I've spent the last 6 years travelling and working with a 2015 13" Retina Pro, which got the jobs done but having to work on C4D and AfterEffects, and using plug-ins, drives you absolutely bananas on a small screen.

Good insights. Thanks. Personally I am going with the 14". I have had the "larger" size (a 2019 15" model) for the past couple of years. It is just large enough that I tend not to unplug it and use it as a "laptop" very often. 95% of the time it just sits connected to my 5K display. I am a landscape photographer and am often in the field but unless I am going on an extended trip I don't take the computer. Instead I make do with an 11" iPad Pro. My belief is that with the smaller model I will still get the additional performance and battery life while having a more portable model. With the 14" I am more likely to unplug it and take it into the field, to a coffee shop or even into other rooms in our home. Before I would get another larger (in this case the 16") I would probably get the next gen Mac Mini since I essentially use my current 15" in that fashion. So for me, portability is key. But I have had many years of working with both MacBook Airs (when I was constantly traveling for business) and larger 17" or 16" models. That said, videos like yours are always helpful. They show how Apple has accommodated the varying needs of a lot of people. Nothing is perfect. Because I will be using this often as a portable computer in the field and around the house I prefer NOT to have a lot of cables plugged in. I love having a docking station and simply plugging in one cable. I don't use HDMI and the SD card slot won't work with the Sony Type A cards that are in my cameras. I would have preferred that Apple give us the flexibility of choosing docking stations that have the ports that we need rather than taking up internal space that could have been used for larger batteries, more airflow or even making it smaller and lighter. But, again, you can't make everyone happy all the time. ;-)

Thanks for the very informative video. I am typing this on my 2007 2.4ghz 17" MacbookPro that I was recently using for video editing with an older version of Final Cut Pro, but the rendering times ! ! ! ! The 16" will be the way I go after hearing your comments. I spent over AU$5000 on the 2007 MacbookPro and FCP software and have been very happy with it, and certainly surprised that it is still going, so not at all concerned at spending what ever is necessary to get a new laptop spec'd to last another decade . . . perhaps ;-)

I agree with you that absolutely drove me nuts too about the ports. I’m using a mid 2012 MacBook Pro now. It’s been a great computer but I would’ve upgraded last year had they had more port. I do not want to pay this much for a laptop and then have to plug-in three different dongle’s or have one giant big dongle hanging off the thing to get anything done. I can’t even believe they did that and it drove me bananas. So I just did not upgrade now I’m thinking of upgrading as of November 2021 with the latest release.

I'm using Logic Pro and I want a compact computer I can put on a stand at my synth, but still take around with me if I want to. For now, my 15" 2017 MBP still serves me well. I think this depends on whether or not this is your main machine. For those who have desktops they would obviously opt for the smaller one as they would only use it when travelling or using it in another location. For me, I got rid of my desktop years ago to save space. I don't like having to see any technology when I'm not using it. As it's my sole machine, I want a bigger laptop. If I'm in another location I'll just use an ipad or tablet for reading and/or my phone.

i was thinking of upgrading the RAM, but if i was going for the base 14", would upgrading the SSD instead of the SoC be just as enticing (for once). First of all its a cheaper upgrade, it also gives you more breathing room so you can carry less external drives around, and like other SSDs, bigger is better. But in this case bigger seems to be really better. Apples claims of how fast their SSDs are arent actually true unless you upgrade to 6? 8? TBs... and even going from 512 to 1TB, some reviewers saw a doubling of their read and writes. i mean if you need more cores, you need more cores, but if thats the case for you, wouldnt you be looking at the max, even if it meant having to finance it? Are 2 cpu cores and 2 gpu cores going to be game changing? again, this is all just based on what ive seen from other peoples reviews, but based on what I've seen, it looks like you do get a decent bump in gpu performance, but the cpu's gains are almost immaterial. Just my 2 cents. last time i bought a MBP, i went for a cpu, gpu, RAM, and SSD upgrade... and the buyers remorse is real. im still bitter. personally, if i dont wait to see whats next and just get one of these mbps, i was thinking 14" base with extra storage or just get the mid tier 16". I'm also not liking the way apple seems to not care about frying their chips... one of maxtechs videos showed cpu temps getting as hot as 105 degrees C.

@@mikedavis1110 considering that all computers regardless of software slows down. Considering that all software is designed to work on OS but not for compatibility with every software. Considering that software patches can change performance and perhaps use more storage. The future proofing is possible only by counting for such issues by thinking of the slowing effects. That will be noticed by end users after years, depending upon software added, RAM, graphics card, processor, storage (not enough operating free space), and how it’s used and how often used by end user. Consider when do you want to buy another computer vs when can you afford to buy a replacement computer. Some of the commentators are forgetting what Tech Gear Talk and Max Tech and a few others had mentioned. Using my own words. It’s for Pro users, Professionals that means you get paid to do the work or getting to prepare for getting paid for your works.

From what I understand, since the 16 is larger it gets more screen, better battery, better sound resonance so crisper bass and of course better cooling which might factor into a 5-10% performance increase in terms of chip performance. Otherwise, they should perform very similarly if matched in specs.
@BeierFilms
@BeierFilms 2 жыл бұрын
@@Yubyop If other tests are to be believed, the performance differences come down to which version of the M1 you get. If both have the same M1 Pro 10/16; the 14 inch is actually slightly (like 2%) faster in some capacities. For the M1 Max, all things remain equal on the CPU front. For GPU tasks, the 16 inch ranges from being 0 - 10% faster for the Max 10/24 version and up to 20% faster for the Max 10/32 in some scenarios (others the advantage smaller). So...it seems like if you're going for the M1 Pro, your biggest concern should be screen size / portability. For the M1 Max, the 24 core GPU should be totally fine but the 32 core one actually isn't going to get you much of a performance increase due to thermal throttling. Honeslty, they probably shouldn't have offered the 32 core version in the 14 inch model since the advantages are so minimal (like less than 5%). That said, even in the 32 core version of the 16 inch model, the 32 core option isn't 50% faster as you might expect (check out some benchmarks). So for me, I'm more than happy to have less cores for the smaller form factor of 14 inches. I already have a desktop PC anyway so I don't want something that's so bulky I feel discouraged from taking it with me (same reason why I'm avoiding the Dell XPS 17 or hardcore gaming laptops).

So when I was given an option to choose the 14inch or 16inch, extra real estate of the 16inch is what I choose. My only regret is that I have to use it in bags and backpacks that support the larger laptop size and I can't use a compact bag. Still in the early stages so we'll see. If I don’t need to move around, I will defiantly choose 16 size as larger screen better cooling and speaker quality are better. Ordered 14 size max 32gpu with 32ram hopefully fan won’t get too noisy while editing large project. At home I mainly use a 16 inch 3070 windows laptop for code and game. Only thing I would mention is that you compared it in the beginning to the current M1 13" MBP (eg. only 2 ports in a "Pro" laptop). To be fair, that was always the "low-end" model (that was only introduced w/ the 2016's) of the 13". The 14" should really be compared to the high-end 13" Intel MBP (4-ports) that it was really replacing.

On the 16" you mentioned the 16 core GPU is the way to go for the majority of users, and that the 32 core GPU for $400 might be worth it for only a select group. well considering once you upgrade to the max chip, you have to get 32gb of ram it would be a $600 upgrade to go to 24 cores. and if your willing to do that then you might as well spend another $200 because the performance boost will be quite a bit for only $200. so I would go with the base model or the full 32 cores. there's no point to get the 24 cores imo.

For super slow, but wholly doable charging, I have found the 2020 iPad Pro 20 watt power brick charges the 16” while watching video in “low power mode” via usb-c. It takes about an hour to charge to 100% from 75%. But that doesn’t concern me. And the supplied 140 watt brick makes me uncomfortable because it gets way hotter than the 20 watt brick. I tested this with a 2m Apple USB-C cable. After some investigation, I discovered that the system actually specifically recognises the 20 Watt supply to adjust the charge demand. So even if your use exceeds the smaller supply’s capacity to supply energy, it would still stretch the battery. And the iPad charger is significantly more portable. So if you do not need fast charge capability, and you are lugging your 16” (10core, 16GPU) around to deliver presentations, across the city, carrying an iPad Pro charger in your pocket maybe the solution you were looking for.

Personally i'd still go for the 14" even if the price was the same, it's just the compact factor that is a deal breaker for me. I can't imagine myself carrying that big 16" wherever I go. Previously I was the type that always went for the "biggest and the best" and I've had big laptops before but it's really not very convenient, and it's almost like you get unmotivated to carry your "portable" laptop with you just because it's not very portable. So I really recommend anyone that actually wants a portable device to go for the smaller 14" or even the 13". However, if you mainly use your laptop stationary at home, then the 16" is going to be more value for your money.

The Amazon reviews are quite encouraging too. In the U.K. 🇬🇧 the 16” model is around 3K + depending on what upgrades you choose. But nevertheless, very expensive to buy. Even the 14” model in the U.K. is around 2K. Although, slightly less expensive in the states, perhaps? But all in all…… cannot really wait to get my hands on this, mac pro 14” laptop. i was thinking of upgrading to that iPad Pro 2022 with the M2 chip. But was advised to buy an Apple Mac instead; as the iPad Pro is still, not a real computer anyway; and is even more expensive to buy this year 2022. I’ll still be keeping my iPad Pro; that way… I’ll have the best of both worlds. Kind regards. Friday afternoon 28th October 2022. U.K. Southampton. 🇬🇧💻

I was sure about the 14, but then again, I never had a 16" notebook. Now I'm leaning towards the bigger one 👀

Please do a video about RAM importance and if going with more RAM than SSD is better for longevity. Also please try to explain 'Memory Swapping'

RAM isn’t important unless you are editing videos etc the bigger the project the more ram you need

Comprehensive and pragmatic review thanks man , my take when you go big , you go big the weight and size difference are not huge , in my view they are quite manageable … or else you opt for the real small which is the 13 pro or even air , I got the 16 and am really happy with it , completely different world screen , sound , performance .. etc , the 14 is just a bigger 13

I bought 16" with more rams and I absolutely love it. I never have any heat problems meaning the fan does not need to work hard while it shows unbelievable performance.

Do you ever actually need more then 16gb ram? (Asking because I'm deciding what to buy)

@@gabrieldertnig depending on what you do. If you need heavy graphical tasks or if you need to use many apps at the same time, more rams make sense to me and I love it.

Traded my 2019 16 in for the new 14 in. Loving the smaller screen. Have a desktop for when I want a bigger screen for something

I no joke, went from a 2006 MacBook Pro to the 14inch base model Pro. So you can imagine what kind of upgrade that is.
