It's not that Adam was turned into an alternate at the end of Vol 2. It was the fact that he was an alternate the ENTIRE TIME. The REAL Adam Murray was taken as a baby and replaced with this version of Adam, who grew up and lived his entire life not knowing he was an alternate. Part of that was because his parents died so nobody would've known he was an alternate unless shown otherwise. It also explains why he's both immune to the alternate's influence (MAD) and has such a morbid curiosity about them as shown early in Vol 4. The Adam we see here in Mandela Catalyst is the same Adam we met in Vol 2, only now he is trying to cope with the fact that he was an Alternate and trying to retain his humanity. Hence the "fate of the jester" quote.

Catalyst maybe because Adam could've been a catalyst Adam + Evelyn Adam and Eve Or perhaps because he's an alternate that isn't directly violent, it's the catalyst for breaking the cycle maybe, or that he's the catalyst for Gabriel's downfall. And after volume 4, seems like Evelyn could be an alternate or at least is one now after whatever got to her in the police station. On the flip side, end of Vol 4 was Gabriel kinda saying it all starts now, maybe Adam's the catalyst for shit going even further south. Maybe he isn't the only one, more people will realise they're alternates and they start acting like them a bit more. Could be what "waking the others" meant. But the signs have been there to begin with, his lack of care for those around him and general ignorance towards the feelings of others. I.E he didn't kill Jonah, but he did completely disregard his death and treat it as entirely trivial. He's a very unfeeling person which could be a remnant of his alternate self. If he really is the messenger as Alex has kind of alluded to, perhaps he's the one running around giving people MAD because he's trying to tell people about the alternates so they can save themselves even? And he just can't remember he's doing it but that's heavily relying on the idea he has a dissociative situation where he's like blacking out and doing things without remembering.
