I'm currently in japan and I definitely felt the stares wearing shorts. I felt underdressed among the Japanese. As you mentioned, they are all very stylish in japan and I stuck out like a sore thumb in my shorts and white legs.

Hi I'm Japanese living in Tokyo. But I've never heard that you shouldn't wear shorts. I also often wear shorts during summer. The only reason I don't wear shorts in winter is simply because it's cold.

Ever since I moved to Aomori in japan, bright colors and body hugging clothes have been stowed away because locals in general don’t want to stick out. It’s a hidden code of conduct that nobody wants to touch on. Dressing for warmth is a priority up north but I guess in Tokyo you can afford to be a bit more fashionable with milder winters.

I was just there and wore some shorts in October on a long early morning walk and then went into Ricoland. Ended up buying motorcycle pants to wear for the train ride back because I felt kind of a vibe. Felt a little weird at times wearing my usual Northern California everyday wear sometimes. One thing coming from California, some Americana/Surf/Skate look seems kind of appreciated here in a modest street style. For example, you could probably show up in full Bass Pro Shop gear and people will love it.

My father tells me that back in the day it was considered inappropriate and completely unacceptable for men to wear shorts in Buenos Aires, it could be in the middle of summer - over 100 degrees and shorts would be frowned upon in the city. Ever since I took an early retirement 5-6 yrs ago, I've been wearing cargo and sports shorts everyday. There were even a year or two I NEVER wear a pants. Whenever we go to Japan, I always wear pants, because we always came during winter. It's cold, so no brainer. But there were twice I wore cargo shorts in Japan, once in Tokyo and once in Narita, to buy breakfast. It was very cold but I had no time to change from waking up gear. We need food and the store was just nearby. Also, from the airport in Manila, I wear a cargo shorts, only to put on a pair of pants once we touched down, as it begins to feel cold.

Thanks for tackling this topic, John. As a traveler in Japan, I think I've tried to look somewhat formal, even though I do wear jeans and Hawaiian shirts, etc. But I've never packed shorts thinking that it wouldn't be appropriate. But next trip, I'll pack some shorts for sight-seeing and hanging out. But for meetings and public events where I have to speak, of course I'd try to look work-casual. I don't wear ties much though, except for showing off some of my collection of American bolo ties. Interesting stream, John! And thanks for your insights, Kanaye!

Good that you point out there are no rules about clothing as such. I guess the point about wearing shorts is similar to how it feels in parts of Italy, Spain and France when wearing shorts: The adult locals never do it and so you will stand out. I am happy that at least some part of the world has not gone totally casual such as is the case in the UK and the US where adults walk around in what can only be described as glorified PJs. Perhaps another aspect to Japan is that at home, Japanese often wear a kind of thin athletic shorts as their pajamas. They sell these as sets with a matching baggy t-shirt at Uniqlo. So wearing shorts outside the home or outside of athletics may seem out of place like wearing swimwear on the train. I don't think it is collectivism as Japanese clothing choices are otherwise incredibly diverse.

Shorts are ok if you're not at work. Even at my work in Arizona (where the temp reach 110+ in summer) we're not allowed to wear shorts for work attire. People that probably told you this probably never have been to Japan before. I see Japanese people in shorts here in Japan and even in summertime they wear flip-flops and go to the beach. Totally normal. It’s not a common attire just like you said a lot of people dress for work or even school but it’s funny that a lot of people are giving you a hard time. It’s good that you are educating people. There are many more attire that would be more offensive. Long shorts is not one of them. The people that are giving you a hard time would have a culture shock if they go to Tokyo Disneyland and see what the girls wear there.

Hairy Legs? Adults didn’t used to wear shorts in town or in the city in Japan when I was here a couple decades ago. That was usually the uniform of young kids. However, adults might wear shorts casually on the beach or such. In Tokyo people dress up and tend to be conscious of style especially. Osaka is more of a be yourself place. Why not where shorts? People might think you didn’t care about fashion. If it’s winter they might think you’d be cold and weren’t prepared somehow, . Also, if somebody had hairy legs it might be embarrassing if people side stared and commented which they do, although more quietly than in some parts of the world. Even years ago I don’t think there was a rule or any prohibition though.
