Because of this harmonic change, you should note that the ascending "pa-a-a-a-cem" in the second to last measure of PART 3 of the round, is DIFFERENT from most common versions of this round. I know there are lots of children, school choirs, church choirs, etc. that use my video to learn to sing this piece, and I apologize for any confusion if your music score looks different from what you hear on my recording. It was never my intention (when I first posted this in 2013) that so many people would be referencing this video for learning purposes. I'm thrilled and happy to be part of your learning process, but I thought I should at least point out this musical change. 🎶

This is my version of a simple yet pretty little canon called "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Grant us peace). I am playing the piano, and singing the round in three parts.

For those viewers who question the pronunciation of "Pacem," there are several acceptable versions. "Pacem" in this case is sung in Ecclesiastical Latin (also known as "Church Latin") which can be referenced here: www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/ecclesiastical_latin.htm I want to add one other program note: I have intentionally altered the harmonic progression of the last two measures of the round. First song my Mom ever taught me & my brother. I was 3 years old and my brother was 4 years old. She would wash the dishes after dinner and my brother & I would sit on the kitchen counter next to the sink and the 3 of us would sing this beautiful canon. Such an amazing into to music and a wonderful memory. Love You, Mom💜

wish i had known it then to teach my little son. His voice was so angelic, he would sing a kind of freeform opera in the bath. i learned it at a dharma centre, and we sang it in rounds. one of the loveliest things to do with the voice, imv. I am certain must bathe the very cells. what a beautiful vision, of little kids singing this in the kitchen, with the Mom. ✨💕✨

I JUST found this!!! Brought tears to my eyes!!! We sang this is summer camp back in the mid to late 19 50’s. I am now 72 and I have tears in my eyes!!! So simple, sweet, and pure!!! Julie- We've been using your video as an example in my girl's choir too. I feel so fortunate to have found this video. Simple and beautiful. It's perfect. And seeing how the 3 parts come and fade away makes it so clearly understandable. It made learning it much easier for them. It's so enjoyable to hear them sing 3 parts!

My aunt taught me all the parts when I was eight years old and we used to sing it together. What a beautiful memory you've conjured here. it was quite easy. if your singing in a group it gets kinda challenging cause TIME is key. each verse has to be in sync.

Creative liberty - sorry. :( I changed things a bit to fit the chord progression that I was going with. It is different from the traditional version.

Is it known who composed this? I always thought it was Bach because I remember hearing this in one of his BWVs....but I could be wrong.

The exact origin of the tune is unknown, which is why it is typically listed as "traditional." It is sometimes attributed to Mozart, but is most likely from folk song origin. Good question!

Angelika van Coevenhoven Ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation follows rules that are more similar to Italian. Her pronunciation isn't wrong at all.

I sang this in choir freshmen year of high-school roughly 15 years ago (class 2010 old I know) Today for some reason it was playing my head. NATURALLY started singing it. Then wondered if I was even singing the right tune. Or missing things. Nope. Was spot on. Right after this song we sang a very fun one in Zulu. I super miss choir.

🐝 Maybe now that things are “opening up” again, you can find a community choir to join. Tonight our chorus meets for the first time in 18 months (since early March 2020) and we’ve all missed singing together and seeing one another. It’s been far too long. There are over 100 of us, and we must show proof of vaccination to enter. I hope you find a group to sing with so you won’t miss choir any more.
