If the body can simulate most of his senses so that he's basically human, I would've told him that "Hey, you were critically injured, and we replaced a good chunk of you with cyborg implants, but you're functionally 70% you" all he had to do was flub how invasive the implants were, maybe gradually reveal the truth and Donald probably would've accepted it if Cecil was honest and admitted he didn't want to lose a valued agent and probably the closest thing he has to a friend.

I wouldn't be TOO upset at having a realistic robot body, so long as my brain was intact. In the sense that it doesn't really bring up "existential" issues about whether you're the same person, anymore than one prosthetic leg or something. What would worry me most if if they messed with my brain itself (beyond a short term memory wipe). Robocop they actually did augment (tinker with) his brain.
@TheAzulmagia3 ай бұрын
The thing is that Donald seemingly didn't agree to the process. Cecil made the decision for him to shove him into a robot and didn't even tell him about it. It comes across as a bit skeevy.

Yeah because in the original _Robocop_ movie by Verhoeven, the gangsters had shot Murphy right in the head, taking out part of his frontal lobe and cerebrum, so the back of his skull was basically replaced by chips and metal, too. But he still had his memories (they tried to wipe those separately), as memory resides in the temporal lobes above the ears, and he still had all the parts of the brain for basic functions (midbrain and cerebellum).

It should say something that Cecil at no point has or is trying to treat Donald as less than human. Keeping him from the truth of his current reality, sure, but with a justifiable (if not objectively correct or excusing) reason both practical (to keep Donald on task) and emotional (to keep his comrade in arms from something that could hurt him emotionally.) Cecil isn't saying it directly, but Donald straight up gave his life and *openly* for the good of the world. Even with the closest thing to a god the world has literally holding Donald's life in his hands, he didn't break or give up *anything.* If that's not a man you want back on your team and in perfect condition, I don't know what is. Cecil *could* have revived Donald as a cyborg, a soldier, a tool to fight evil. He brought him back as a human, tried to give him back his life in as much capacity as he could. I don't know if this series will care about that, but it should count for something. Not that Donald's wrong to be upset, in any way, but *still.*
@danieldickson85912 ай бұрын
If Cecil had just said exactly that to Donald, even at this late stage, their relationship might have been mended. But Cecil has become too arrogant, too controlling, too stubborn to admit a mistake. And he's not willing to be emotionally vulnerable any more. I think all his responsibilities, his losses, his failures from Season One, are eating away at Cecil's humanity.
@lordbiscuitthetossable53522 ай бұрын
I think it's part of what makes this version of Cecil really tick. Sure, he is often cold and will exploit anyone, even Donald, to keep the most effective tools at his disposal at all times, but we always have the sense that he has to be pragmatic to operate effectively. Clearly, it means that, if nothing else, Donald is invaluable to Cesil on an operational level simply because agents who go above and beyond are practically unheard of in his line of work. Or perhaps he keeps bringing him back because he's fond of him and reminds him of what good their work does, or somewhere in between. It's the same in the way he gets around Mark; he needs someone who can fill Omni-man's role and deal with viltrimites, and Mark is currently the only one on his payroll, so likely his compassion is between genuine and cold necessary.
@Whitecroc2 ай бұрын
I enjoy Cecil as a character because he is a softer version of the "callous director" trope. He makes big decisions and often treats people like tools, but he is not indifferent to the suffering he causes and does try to make things right even when he doesn't have to.
@tailuigiАй бұрын
Although he didn't know it at this point, erasing the memory of his death (and the previous ones, too) was Donald's own idea. So Cecil doesn't actually need a justification - he's only done what was asked of him. Neither of them is really in the wrong.

@atomicskull64052 ай бұрын
Ghost in the Shell does it better. Being a brain in a robot body is so common nobody even thinks anything about it. It's expected that everyone has at least some cybernetics. It's more weird to not have *any* cybernetics, 99% of people get a reinforced skull to protect their brain and data port even if they don't get any other augmentation. Traumatic brain injury is also much less of a deal that irl, as long as the frontal lobes are mostly intact just about any part of the brain that's not directly involved with cognition can be replaced with cybernetics while leaving the personality more or less intact.

So incredibly selfless to the point of being suicidal. It's always hard to tell with him though; what makes him a great liar is that he can mince his words and one of the real boons with the animated series? They made him really good at both being genuine and a liar. In the comics, sometimes he was a massive arsehole for the sake of it, perhaps he will be here particularly when Mark's loyalty is ever in question, but for him, Donald was worth keeping around regardless of the cost.

Donald is one of my favorite characters, top five, maybe top three. I love this scene. I love him finally standing up to Cecil. It’s not that I don’t like Cecil, I actually really like Cecil because he makes the hard calls in impossible situations and still somehow has some humanity left in him, but Donald is the most realistic character. Underappreciated, brave but quietly so . I mean he got his spine RIPPED out and still had the presence of mind to try and blow up Omni man, even knowing it wouldn’t work, he still tried to save the rest of the world while in pain I can’t even imagine. And this is..like a sexual assault only worse. Everything he ever was has been taken away without his permission. I mean, he’s not even technically HUMAN anymore and he had no say, no idea it could even happen. Yes , he’s alive but he has to completely redefine what that means. That’s overwhelming for anyone. Donald is like a whole different type of super hero in this show, purely based off who he is inside.

And at one point he asked for his memories his death(s) be erased Yeah, Cecil tried to keep that promise in the most horrible way and I doubt he did entirely out of the good of his heart.
