@@sick-and-sour - he's actually not wrong despite his sarcasm. Himmler was a good conversationalist, was greatly misunderstood, and did indeed go a bit overboard in certain areas. Movies and biased documentaries lead us to believe that Nazis were blithering idiots. They weren't. The prosecution had a really tough time at the Nuremburg trials to convict them. Legitimately the prosecution never won, they had to force certain narratives in order to close the chapter on the trials towards execution. Also because the Soviets were getting impatient. Lets not be mistaken by the Naziboo accusation, they really were incredibly sharp. They only lost because they bit far more than they could chew, hypnotized by their own competence.

Donald Pleasance was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire in 1919 & is probably the best-known person to come from that town. He was the son of the railway stationmaster. As an actor he never turned down a role, joined the RAF in WW2 & was shot down over Germany in a Lancaster bomber in 1944. He was in a prisoner-of-war camp for the remainder of the war, so he had plenty of personal research material for his role in The Great Escape. As Heinrich Himmler he’s at his chilling best, even though it’s a short scene. Pleasance was one of the greats. Rest In Peace.

Wow, fantastic performance by a veteran actor. There is just the right mix of charm and menace. I love especially where Himmler tries to make a joke but Herr Oberst never laughs and Himmler is unsure of himself. Only the greatest actors can get these nuances in character down and make it look easy.

The book is worth reading. It is very high paced, never a dull moment in any chapter. I can see why Jack Higgins is one of the best selling writers around. He loves to toy with historical events so if the movie followed the book very closely, half of it is fictional and the other half is documented historical fact. Higgins leaves it up to the readers/viewers to find out which is true or speculation.

"So, you see Radl, under the terms of that document, even I find myself under your personal command." I halfway expected Radl to try to speak, only to be cut off by Himmler calmly saying, "Don't even think about it."
@largol33t13 жыл бұрын
There is a small change in the discussion they had and I wish they had left it alone. In the novel by Jack Higgins, just as Radl is about to leave, Himmler says very coldly "Remember herr Oberst, failure is a sign of weakness." it was meant to foreshadow something later on in the book when Radl found himself in a cell at the mercy of the gestapo, awaiting interrogation. It seems Himmler was not happy with the outcome of the operation. Many of the events in the book are based on a real incident called the Slapton Sands incident. A German patrol boat intercepted Allied troops practicing with their new landing craft for the famous 6 June invasion.

@brandoneiger4 жыл бұрын
@@banzai70 1) As long as Radl had physical possession of the letter Radl was immune to Himmler's persecution, thus the letter had to be destroyed to prevent it's use AFTER the mission started. 2) Without the actual letter no one had any proof that Himmler was behind a super secret mission that failed. In the end it was all about Himmler protecting himself and erasing any evidence, both on paper or in the person of Radl,of failure. Failure was not looked up favorably in the 3rd Reich.
