big misconception when it comes to this. housing is far from cheap in the uk where I live nowadays (London) a 2 bed apartment could cost about 1.5m or something stupid like that. people automatically assume that a million dollars is a lot of money because we are grown up to believe that, and plus it sounds like a large sum of money to us.

+HeavyMecha Actually, notice he never mentions he paid it back. In fact chances are he didn't even have a timeline to pay it back. On that note, as others have mentioned, he initially got a loan of a million, then he inherited several million once his daddy died. And lastly, as many pointed out, it is a lot easier to make money once you have it. Inflation alone would make his million nearly 5 times as much alone. Of course, Trump did do something but it is nowhere near the struggles of the common person or that single mother for that matter.

odblog Again, his father did not "give him a million dollars, he LOANED him a million dollars, there is a huge difference. He didn't just get a million dollars to piss around with, he had to earn enough money to pay back the loan, plus interest. He had little help from his father if you're talking about his business. And he is actually worth several billion dollars. Although he inflated his net worth to around 10 billion, different news outlets found his net worth to be around 3-5 billion dollars.

I highly doubt his father would just loan him a fraction of his fortune, no questions asked. "He wouldn't have to face the consequences of not paying his father back." That's not even relevant considering he DID pay his father back. His father loaned him money, meaning there are obviously consequences to failure of paying back that loan.

odblog You've just regurgitated exactly what you said before. Again, Trump still had to convince his father, logically, it would've been objective considering the sum of money Trump was looking for. And if I would have to repeat again, the whole "There would be no consequences if Trump didn't pay the loan back" argument is completely irrelevant considering he did pay his father back. You wouldn't know if his father would or wouldn't take legal action against Trump if the loan was not paid back. What he has done is quite remarkable. To work in real estate in a completely new state with little understanding of the market there and actually becoming successful is again, remarkable. Safer investments aren't going to be more profitable. A basic concept in business is Risk Vs Reward, which explains the riskier the investment, the more profitable it will be if successful. Play it safe and of course you won't lose your principal, but you won't be earning much either. Trump made risky investments that built his fortune.

Although yes, you're right, when adjusted for inflation 1 million is worth a lot more, unfortunately we don't know when he got the loan so we are not able to actually calculate for inflation. However, it's actually quite easy to lose money in the stock market and the housing market, bad penny stocks and you've just wasted a considerable sum of money. Is Trump the best business man? Certainly not, but he has done an incredible job, starting from a few million (adjusted for inflation) to a net worth of approximately 3.8 billion.

I'm not saying the dude isn't good for being able to invest so well, but if he didn't get that loan, do you think he would be where he is? You may want to study a bit of finance and economics, you'll get to know how one value relates to another. For example, to the US government, even a loan of a billion USD can be considered a small loan.

+B Smith You could take 50K and put 25k in high risk investments, and put 25k in low risk investments and sit back and watch 20%+ gains a year. But if you had a million dollars epecially in the 70's with lower inflation. You could easily hire a real estate agent and find yourself a prime piece of land with a hotel or whatever and you really got yourself set.

If you invest wisely you get 4 billion. Trump was no rag-to riches story, he was just smart with investing his money but not extraordinary in any form.
