Those tacos looked good! I think my Mexican brother-in-law would disagree, but he's a bit traditional when it comes to food (I usually am too, but I am willing to try things). Maybe you could pick a couple of those and show us all how you would make them. As for what you could eat next, I noticed that you visited a food truck and one of the restaurants was formerly a food truck, maybe you could do a food truck tour? Show us the trucks that have the most unique flavors, fusions, or combinations that we would otherwise miss. (By the way, the date night at home in the backyard was a nice touch.)

mole sauce is chocolate and chili pepper with some sort of fruit and nut thickened with bread. every family/region has its own version.

The couple date meal is great! I would suggest Tamales -- there is a great tamales location just down the street from Venice Beach I would think that would make a nice stop on a tamale run. Korean BBQ. Fish Markets that also serve food. maybe a breakfast locations. Tea houses.

I was skeptical that you were in LA since it seemed so trafficless, but the second you hit the jam...ugh. LA traffic sucks. Great video with all of the authentic tacos you showed us (I'm surprised one of the places was a taco truck) and thank you for not drinking and driving.

Donal you must come to Mexico to try more tacos and many other dishes, the Guerrilla tacos are the most original ones but come on, tacos can be made if many stuff an be a good taco (except for those crunchy taco bell things)

I've never seen any of these type of tacos growing up. Tacos for me are 2 tortillas steak,tongue or chorizo with cilantro an onions and salsa an lime on the side.

"There´s no such a thing as an authentic taco" and with that you can know where you are, a phrase that only will be said by someone that don't know what a tradition means, authentic taco is what you find in every street, every corner in México, with tortilla de maiz or tortilla morada, with carne enchilada, cecina, chorizo, huitlacoche, queso, from Baja California to Chiapas, thats a phrase to excuse that you can do whatever you want with that food and call it taco, as we see in the video thats a USA versión of a taco, Whats a Mexican taco? is easy, just go inside México and thats by default a Mexican taco, any taco outside México even if is made by a Mexican with the same ingredients isn't a Mexican taco is a Mexican style taco.

All that looks delicious but they're not real street food you find here. Authentic tacos exist, and you can find them on Mexico :) Traditional Mexican tostadas could be de tinga, pata, shrimps, but very different from those, mushrooms, picadillo... And you can put sour cream, salsa and lettuce on them, but never in tacos. Tacos are a whole different world, there is pastor, suadero, chorizo, bistec, chicharrón, carnitas, even tacos de guisado. But you'll never find tacos de camote (sweet potato).

Some silly arguments in the comments about authenticity. Next to art, food is one of the most subjective things out there. Like pizza, tacos are based more on how they are prepared or served, and what goes in it/on it is entirely up to you. I love the fusion tacos, it shows how creative the chefs are putting cultures together and wanting to create something different and original as opposed to something one could easily make at home.

You haven't been to Boston, Donal. You are lucky out in LA because even though most of the roads are highway and gridlock traffic is bad during rush hour, at least the drivers obey the signs and, more importantly, the lights. Take it from someone who has lived in Boston for a year; pedestrians fear to walk at the light, as Boston drivers are notorious for running them, not to mention infamous for being aggressive in honking, swearing, and lewd gestures to be given priority. Boston aside, CA is my favorite state for tacos and Mexican/South American food. Whereas NYC was the ethnic melting pot in the early 20th century USA, I would say the modern melting pot would be in either LA or San Francisco.

where I live there were no Mexicans like 10 years ago now there a small community of Mexicans and several eating spots have opened up in the last 5 years. I was never a Taco Bell fan but now im pretty sure ill never eat Taco Bell again.
