To me it’s very interesting to hear him switch between his talkshow voice and his standard speaking voice so easily. It’s wild to be staring at a young David Letterman and then out of nowhere you hear the old man.

Always loved Dave’s self deprecating humor, but in settings like this he really is so well spoken and such a thoughtful guy. Thanks for all the great Dave content.

Always enjoyed Larry's interviewing. He tries to get the guest to open up and be honest. There is alot of respect shown here. Dave really has alot to say. He tries to be funny even when the answer is serious. Thanks utube.

"I will not be doing this at 63, clearly" 🙂 and Dave has, in fact, said in intereviews during his 2015 retirement he probably should have retired in 2005. Glad he didn't, because we won't have a funnyman like him on TV again.

I know about Connie Chung leaving CBS in 1995, but was there another controversy at the time that they're referencing in the beginning of this interview? Something about ratings?

CBS had lost the NFL to Fox and I imagine their overall primetime ratings were low. However, at the time of this interview, Letterman was still beating Leno. A month later, Leno would interview Hugh Grant and start beating Letterman in the ratings.

@@kolst8406 yeah that was pre, csi/survivor, cbs was towards the end of female sewing mon night sitcoms, in 3 seasons cbs would have thur locked down, then mon with Cosby/koq/elr/backer, cbs had the same issue as always 94/95, high overall ratings low demo, they chased demo, all decisions bombed till csi/survivor Injected youth into schedule then less stole WB sitcoms from nbc, put them back in top both directiond

It wasn’t just losing the NFL but that caused a domino effect that caused them to lose several key stations in big markets. That caused a major drop in ratings for the whole network cause of so many new affiliates on UHF channels in several cities. They had a long road to climb out of that hole.

They lost the NFL to Fox for the '94 season, and largely as a result lost a lot of affiliates. I think their ratings dropped pretty precipitously after that as well.

Also by 1995 NBC had overtaken them in the prime time ratings with juggernaut ratings for Frasier, Friends, Seinfeld, ER and Law and Order.

Yes CBS was in a lot of trouble, it was the first time they didn't have NFL since the 60's. Plus, cable had been eating into all network ratings for over 15 years at this point. We have to remember CBS had been a very steady and high rated network(very few lows) ever since it's inception, so this was the first time they really were suffering badly.

In a completely unrelated story.....In 1991 Letterman founded "(Bobby)Rahal-(David)Letterman Racing". I forget who was driving, but, their team won the 2004 Indy 500. I'm sure Dale Earnhardt was credited with the win. He receives credit, for everything. First man to swim the Mississippi, upstream, underwater; first man on the Moon etc.

You know what’s hilarious, if Letterman had fired up a cigarette instead of a cigar Larry and probably half of his crew would have lost it. Because, you know, cigar smoking is much safer than cigarettes. And, and, and there’s no danger of the big bugaboo known as secondhand smoke with cigars.

I have no idea what you were talking about 5 years ago when you both wrote that. I started watching Dave on Late Night in 1987 when I was 8 years old and all I saw was a man in complete control of his environment. He was 5 years in at that time. That was part of his appeal. The ringleader of the circus.
