He’s zany, charming and very generous to Dave here. Letting Dave do his zingers. He seemed to respect him. As we well know, Lewis had no patience with interviewers and could be rude and pedantic. Here, he’s rolling along with Dave beautifully.

Of all the shows I've watched where Jerry was a guest, he was the funniest on Dave's show. Their chemistry is excellent!

Every year growing up for me, no matter what, my Dad Nicolau stopped the clock to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. I remember being picked by my Dad to call into 'The Jerry Lewis Fund" show and tell Jerry What we raised for him, and it was awesome. My Dad N has passed in 2016, and when I feel lonely, I watch this and remember just what he taught me, my Dad and Jerry ... Dad was like you can do good work, and be super silly too! I respect Jerry, yes, he made life mistakes, who hasn't??? I love you Dad, and I love you Jerry! Thank you!

Great segments !! I love and respect Jerry more than I like him . I don't mean it in a cut down way . I didn't realize just how much he did until I watched a doc on his life done just before he passed . An AWESOME DUDE and amazing man .

Buddy Love was the ultra cool, very cocky young Jerry Lewis! I think he was Jeckyl and Hyde himself, crazy and funny but sometimes serious and nasty when the mood took him. Still, an incredible guy, very sharp and clever, unbeatable expression, I still watch his old films.

Jerry Lewis was a genius. Virtually everyone who dealt or worked with him said he was very hard to deal with, but successful, wealthy & talented people usually are. Notice he's almost chain-smoking & coughing in 1982, and only 2 months later he had a heart attack. Martin Short nailed it when he says to do a good impression of him you act like you're sucking on a lozenge. RIP Jerry.

6:54 going to commercial. classic, brilliant Jerry. the head moving back and forth from camera to DAve. While most think of Lewis for his pratfalls and large bits, I have always loved the tiny tiny things that are so brilliant and that move was one of them.

A great comic , a comedic mind at his best. A type of comedy that no longer exist.

I don't know why I continue to read comments regarding Jer when there is a high chance that I'll read something awful, but I do. It is my belief that if you truly love someone, you love all of them; see the person in their entirety. Not one of us is perfect and if people cared enough to bother learning about the real Jerry, the man behind the mask, they would discover that he was always the first to admit to mistakes and he owned them. He was very candid in certain books regarding his personal life, as well as his career. He was very honest about who he was as a man. He may have behaved badly for a time, but he during that time was highly addicted to pain killers due to his back injury. He was in such agony for many years, that if not for him hearing his children's laughter, he may have taken his own life. As with any addict, his brain would have been affected by the drugs, therefore his behaviour was altered. Back pain is excruciating ( I myself have experienced it ) and he lived with that continual pain for years. I get cranky when it's that time, or when I have a headache, I cannot begin to imagine how I would cope with what Jer had to deal with. He was highly intelligent and a perfectionist, thus found it difficult to work with anyone that was deemed incompetent. What boss wouldn't fire a person if they consistently failed to do the job they were hired to do? I know of people who adored working with him so much, they appeared in many of his films. Jer fools around in an interview because that's part of the act; if he didn't people would question why. A case of dammed if you don't and dammed if you do I guess. I have no doubt that David knew what he was getting himself into. If he was a nasty jerk, I never saw it. In my life his job was to make me laugh and he did that in spades. My childhood was not the best, so I will be forever grateful for the sunshine that Jer brought into my life through his movies. I was lucky enough to meet him at a show in 2008 and he was magnificent. He invited people to go on stage and he was nothing but kind and respectful. Of course his family saw him differently; to his children he was their father. Perhaps he wasn't the best at being a dad, I couldn't say. I do know that he's not alone, particularly in show business. I saw an interview of Sammy and he openly admitted that entertaining came before his family. It's not great, but Jer is not alone. These stars have a dream and they chase it. There is a reason they say you can't have it all, career and family; they don't always mix well. It saddens me to think that perhaps he wasn't getting along with his boys, whether all or some, but there is always another side to the story. A lot of the pain we feel regarding our childhood is felt from a child's perspective; although now grown, we feel it the same way we did as a child. I had to accept this in order to forgive my mother. Just a thought. I apologise for going on so much, but clearly I love him. I love the clown and I love the man behind the mask. I accept him for who he was; that is what it means to love someone. When a person does treat another badly, I like to look at why. Things are not always what they seem. We should never accept ill treatment, but sometimes, just sometimes, we can show compassion and understanding for the perfectly imperfect. Personally I feel that being able to admit to your mistakes and faults, and take responsibility for them says a lot about you as a person; many people cannot.

The '82 Jerry is amazing. He could turn it on when he wanted to--or maybe better to say he turn off all the tiring, boorish behavior when he felt like it. He's really funny here. Letterman is also being gracious and letting Jerry riff all he wants to because he knows how good it is. Like when he had Andy Kaufman on, Dave would get let him go, feed him a benign comment or two like Carson was so good at. So altogether a great show business performance!

I don't remember him being this funny during an interview.

The great thing about seeing this now, 35 years later(!!!) is that, back then, Jerry was the old school, vaudeville-trained, old-garde and Dave was bringing this new type of ironic humor to television but, seeing it now, Dave was no less schticky than Jerry! And you can see how much Dave loves him but it's very hard for these two character / humor-types to co-exist on one stage! Which makes it even nicer when Dave gets Jerry laughing a few times. Great to see this now. R.I.P., Jerry. Thanks for always going WAY over the top and always owning it!

I have watched a lot of Jerry's interviews and read quite a bit about him. I think this was a brilliant and flawed human who could never tell exactly where "Jerry Lewis" ended and Joseph Levitch began. Interesting person for sure.
