We Americans my age (67) were so blessed to have grown up in that America. We watched and loved this show, The Rifleman, and so many others all TV shows with stories about decency, honor winning the day no matter what the problem or ugly type situation!

Hi Charlotte, I was also very fortunate to live that era (born 1950) - I grew up with those shows. The family, neighbors, church, community, youth groups (4-H, Boys/Girls Scouts), the Media (TV, Radio, Movies...) reflected, reinforced, and promoted traditional American values and principles. We were not perfect but America was "beautiful" and we lived with optimism and innocence. Ciao, L (Baby Boomer Veteran).

Carl Betz and Donna Reed had an amazing chemistry between them. Unlike other parents of this sitcom era, Betz and Reed smiled at each other, kissed each other often and held each other while talking. I think out of all the family sitcoms from the 50s and 60s, I appreciate the effortless, brilliant acting and the love of family that was portrayed on the Donna Reed Show.

The Cleavers and the Andersons were great TV families at that time, too, but I agree - if I had to choose the most natural TV family during the 1950s and '60s I would vote for the Stones. Donna, Alex, Mary and Jeff (and later Tricia) were so natural together that anyone would believe they were really related. I read or heard somewhere that after the show ended the four of them would still go out and eat together. What a treat that would have been to have had the good fortune to be eating at the same restaurant as "the Stones." "The Donna Reed Show" has definitely stood the test of time and is a true classic! Thank you to all of the people involved in making that series.

I'm 58 years old and was stationed in West Germany( Germany today) when Donna Reed passed away on January 14th 1986. My eyes welled up with tears be cuz I did not know she was already ill and then for her birthday ( January 27th) I went down to the local "Konditorei"(pâtisserie or confectionery shop) and bought a black forest cake for her birthday. The next day, I took some of her cake to work and was eating it during a coffee break when I heard on the radio that the Challenger space shuttle exploded and I said to myself " Okay ... what else can go wrong?". Eating that cake and thinking of the warm, feelings everybody had for Donna Reed was just what helped me to better cope of what happened back in the States. P.S. l still mourn her loss but cherish the happy memories of my "TV Mom ". I wonder what happy memories will the kids nowadays have about their childhood when they are my age, playing video games? Just wondering ... :)

One of my favorite sitcoms of the 1950s and 1960s period. Better than the junk we get today with little to NO true story, acting, moral lessons and great chemistry between actors...any filth goes in reality tv ! Hate the CRUD of today !!!!!! Love Ms Donna Reed in "It's A Wonderful Life." And so much more. The chemistry between Ms Donna Reed and Mr. Best was wonderful to see. Miss those days. And then latter came the "Waltons" which was a great show because of the same thing...story, acting, lessons, chemistry, etc. Nice trivia.

I agree. I also enjoyed "The Donna Reed Show," as well as "Father Knows Best," "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" all for many of the same reasons you stated you appreciate "The Donna Reed Show." Although with "Ozzie & Harriet" there was also a very ahead-of-its-time production which frequently broke the fourth wall of comedy and also Incorporated dream sequences fairly often as a device, many episodes exploring the mundane and ordinary situations of everyday life to the level of absurdity, while incorporating multiple convoluted storylines. In that sense, "Ozzie & Harriet" was really the first sitcom "about nothing," decades before "Seinfeld" purported to have innovated that non-thematic approach. But I also appreciate some of those older television sitcoms with non-traditional families, such as "Bachelor Father," "The Andy Griffith Show," "My Three Sons," "Family Affair" and "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," which had those same qualities as the sitcoms with traditional family settings except featured households where the mother was deceased and so the dad (or father figure, as represented by uncles) made the best of a sad situation with help from relatives and friends. That is also how reality was in my home after my mother died when I was 11 years old. So my dad raised my sister and I with help from his sisters (our aunts) and from some good neighbors who lived close by our home. Then two of those aunts (who had been sort of substitute mothers) died about a year after my mom's death. So my sister and I kind of raised ourselves some of the time, since our dad had to be at work. I certainly learned housekeeping skills (dusting, vacuuming, laundry, cleaning bathrooms) at an early age. And my sister took care of preparing the evening dinners. But we had actually been doing some of those chores even when my mom was still alive, since she had been in and out of the hospital a few years before she passed away from cancer. And my mom had also taught me, even as a very young boy, how to heat up a can of soup or bake a frozen pizza, make a sandwich, etc., so I would not be helpless. I don't think parents do their children any favors by making them too dependent. I think survival skills need to be taught at an early age, as early as is possible, just to be prepared for worst-case scenarios. But as sad as things were for the orphaned "Buffy," "Jody" and "Cissy Davis" in "Family Affair," they at least had a wealthy "Uncle Bill " who provided for them, plus a live-in butler ("Mr. French"). Yet even the "Davis" kids discovered other child peers who had things worse than them. I can distinctly recall one episode in which "Buffy" at first envied a schoolmate's independence, until she discovered how lonely this little girl was because there was no one at home for her most of the time, her mother either working as a waitress or out on dates trying to meet a prospective new mate; the episode dealing with the subject of so-called "latchkey kids." And then I also enjoyed some of those sitcoms which had little or no emphasis on family settings but more about the comic situations themselves, such as the series' starring Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. But even the popular sitcoms of later years (including the so-called "social relevancy" sitcoms), such as "All in the Family," "The Golden Girls," "The Nanny," "Everybody Loves Raymond," and "Frasier," or the more recent sitcoms such as "The Middle" and "Last Man Standing," still have their own family situations and often incorporate little morality plays within episodes. My biggest criticism with later sitcoms is they try too much for the laugh lines every 30 seconds at the expense of the overall moral and the character development. I wish there were at least a few TV comedies around today which didn't push quite so hard for the laughs at the expense of the character interaction and the moral of the story. I think it would be great if a few writers could create a "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Donna Reed Show" for the 21st Century.

Morals, Ethics, Consequence and good family programs.. I am so pleased to have grown up in a very wonderful time... Its all relative to a degree, but I feel there was more respect for others back in the day.. then there is today... God bless METV.... :)

This show is indicative of why America used to be great. When this show was on the air, we all loved and identified with it. I seriously doubt that the same would occur today - maybe if Donna Reed got a few tattoos, had a foul mouth and dressed in clothes that were way too tight or falling off, then the show might be viewed today; but God forbid that any values should be taught!
@rickmemmer5625
@rickmemmer5625 3 жыл бұрын
People "love and identify" with a lot of goodness -- but to emulate that goodness is what counts. Maybe you do and that's great, but our culture didn't become the way it is simply because we don't have shows like these anymore. There are still plenty of people who grew up on those such shows -- but somewhere along the way, they lost their sense of being grounded to the goodness that they believed in. The same can be said about "faithful Christians" -- they have all the tools they need to embody goodness (a blueprint for it, in fact). But in the pursuit of their values, most of them forgot the importance of virtue in how you go about getting what you want.

My mother, Dorothy Marie Beaufford Davis, ( 1925 - 1984) age 58, died of lung cancer…absolutely WAS Donna Reed. I have missed her and loved her every day since she died in my arms on September 18th, 1984. I have needed her so many times…especially when my oldest grandchild, Brittany, died in a car accident at 21 in 2008, then when my son Rick Conn, who was a CPA, and owned his own accounting firm in Allen, Texas, finally got to a place where he could not cope with this world any longer and took his own life so he could be with his daughter. He was a good, good daddy and a wonderful son and big brother to his little brother and to his 5 little sisters. I needed my mother then just like I have needed her every day of my 76 years. I hope Heaven is like when I was a little girl and could run into my mother’s embrace and know that I was safe from all harm, all cold, every thing that was scary…..just like Mary and Jeff felt about their TV mom, Donna Reed. I just hope that my children and grandchildren think I have been even half as good a mother to them as my mother and Donna Reed was to her family. And to my brother and I. I have sincerely tried. We need to be able to see The Donna Reed Show, The Walton’s, Father Knows Best, The Andy Griffith Show and Roy Rogers where there were no cuss words, there was always a moral to help children learn how we should behave and treat others. Sometimes I just want to clench my fists, stand tall and shouts, I WANT MY MOTHER…..NOW! If only I could. Thank you to whomever put this on KZfaq.

THE DONNA REED SHOW was a typically great show. The idealized family life portrayed was something that most families aspired to, even if they often didn't quite match. The stories were well-written, and combined gentle humor with pathos. Screen Gems, of all the studios, specialized in this type of program. FATHER KNOWS BEST, HAZEL, THE FARMER'S DAUGHTER, and others all reflect the studio's efforts to provide family-friendly programs with terrific actors and often, a moral lesson. These programs were sometmes attempted with success at other studios, but Screen Gems really specialized in this classic type of story telling.

LOVE the Donna Reed Show. Of all of the shows from that era, I related to it the most. Donna Stone reminded me of my Gram in some ways (except Gram had a job outside of the home). Donna was pretty progressive for the era and the show addressed things that other shows did not. I also loved how perfectly matched Paul and Shelley (and later Patty) were to Donna and Carl. They really looked like they could be their children.

Although even at that time we as black people did not have it easy, I still miss seeing women act like LADIES (no tattoos, breast cleavages exposure, or foul language). Thank you for these films

Whenever I watch this, I see my mother. And I remember that, aside from my mother, the person I loved best was Mary Ollie, the woman who was hired to "help out ". She truly was family. Until a boyfriend convinced her that working for a "white family " was something degrading. I am in my 50's now, and I still cry when I remember the day she walked out on us. My first experience of real racial prejudice. And, yes, I still love her.

My 2 sons were just like Jeff when they were growing up. . We lost my oldest son 3 days before his 54th birthday in 2019. I miss him more then I could ever say. The Donna Reed Show was one of those shows that every one wanted to actually want to live in…like The Andy Griffith Show and the Walton’s. I miss shows like those.

@@yvonnelopez3183 I grew up in the 50's and 60's and rate TDRS one of the best, right along with Father Knows Best. I, too, loved Shelley who followed in the footsteps of Elinor Donohue, another great actress.

Just realized that the Donna Reed show was on from '58-66, and created Campbell's soup ads as on the show. Andy Warhol's Campbell soup cans came out in 1962. I wonder if Reed's commercials were an indirect influence.
