Sugar can't help it. she grew up with that mother - volatile and violent - scary woman - and who scapegoated Natalia. Natalie gets the worst of it. her way of coping is to be a caretaker - making sure everyone is okay - it's compulsive and it comes from a deeply unconscious place. she MUST ask it. it's her JOB in the family. she does it with everyone. meanwhile: natalie herself is not okay. Pete is the only person who actually takes care of her, not the other way around. Carmy and Natalie completely dissociate at the end - Mike freaks out. everyone has their role in this family system.

There are 4 major responses to trauma: Fight, Flight, Fawn, and Freeze. Michael fights (even with himself), Michelle runs away to New York, Natalie tries to make everything/everyone okay, and Carmen freezes up and disassociates. The family is a personification of trauma, both cause and effect.

Mikey did not want to fight with just anyone. He specifically dislikes Uncle Lee (even though he borrowed money from him). Just think about it. If there's an asshole family friend (one of your father's best friends) who starts hanging around your mom and is trying to replace your father as the head of the household, wouldn't you start disliking him bit by bit? Lee wasn't wrong about Mikey and his constant money schemes (Carmy even made a comment about it early in the episode) but picking that time and place to constantly "poke the bear" was clearly stupid. Also, Uncle Lee, Uncle Cicero and the Berzatto dad were best friends so they were probably tough, big shots when they were younger (Cicero's personality and connections kind of shows that off) so Lee picking a fight with the physically bigger Mikey probably didn't run through his mind since old, tough, gangster-like guys usually tend to forget that they're no longer young and invincible because they're used to being the top dog for so long. Mental issues or trauma clearly runs in the family (with Donna, Mikey, Carmy and even Sugar) and that's something to be aware of as the show goes forward.

Why does the watermark say "The Boys"? Lol

The verbalization and reaction between Mike & Lee and Sugar & Donna are kinda the parallel. Lee should not have taken shots at Mike and Sugar should not have kept asking Donna if she was okay *knowing who they both are* (poking the bears). However, the reactions of Mike and Donna were not right-more aggressive than what was needed. They did a great job of showing the relationships by pairing people we sort of knew with new characters. (49:46) agree with this final point as well. This episode was insane with the background conversations, the timer going off every 5 minutes, and the tense relationships. They did well with building the most uncomfortable atmosphere lol.
