Donna Kato - A Life In Polymer Clay

Күн бұрын

Welcome to my channel, studio and this little tutorial on creating controlled crackle on polymer clay with acrylic paint. Let me tell you, acrylic paint on clay is something I have avoided like that old plague for decades. I just kept putting it off until tomorrow...tomorrow...30 years later, tomorrow came.
I hope you enjoy the process, it really is fun, if a bit messy the way I do it. Feel free to replace fingers with brushes, too.
Enjoy! This tute is all about the technique but I did include a "snakeskin" bead!
Cheers, D

Great tutorial, Donna! In general Metallic Acrylic Paints are much Stretchier...if that's a word...lol. The regular "opaque" colors will just work better. Like you said I don't know what they have to put in the Metallics that's not in the Opaque colors but in my experience the Metallics just don't crackle as well on their own. I've had my YT Channel for many years & have done many types of Crackle but your explanations are right on point. ❤

Hi Donna, I had the pleasure of meeting you, Elise Winters and many of the other Polymer Clay Pioneers at the New York Polymer Clay Guild classes at the Fashion Institute Of Technology back in the 90's. I'm so glad to see you're still teaching us new tricks, and I wish the Guild still had in person classes vs "Zoom" meetings. BTW, I actually still have some canes and veneers from back then, as well as my first Mokume Gane pieces from a class Elise taught. I always wondered how she did those beautiful, sinuous and sculptural pieces of wearable art, it's too bad there is no record of how she did it. I know she must be smiling down at you for making this video, and keeping her work alive in our hearts. Thank you for all your beautiful and innovative work, and all you've done for PC over the years, it is appreciated!!!

Oh, my, FIT! Well I remember those days. I had just started teaching…wow. Elise was such a wonderful person, she did so much for our medium. I wish her innovations were not lost. It happens, and it’s really a shame. I think I know basically how she did it but the scale of her work was amazing. Lol. I could make a mini Elise! Well, take care of yourself! Hugs, D

Great comparisons! I love how your paint diamonds turn relative to each other. I have a memory of a tutorial for that Elise Winters style from years ago. It involved a texture plate with very low relief. (An earlier poster mentioned this.) I've been trying to remember where I saw it and whether the texture was applied before or after the paint...no dice. It was genius. The high spots had more clay, so the areas spread differently and the paint broke to pattern when the clay was flattened with the pasta machine.

Hi Donna! Thank u so much for the video! I love the way u do comparisons and the detail to which u use to explain the process. I also love how u recognize artist that used polymer clay processes in the past. Your snake skin bead was spectacular! I know u mentioned coloring some pieces with alcohol inks and I agree it is a terrible mess most of the time. There r little dobbers that come with alcohol inks sometimes. I wonder how using the dobbers to apply chalk pastels would work on clay. Of course it would have to be sealed in some way but at least u could perhaps have more color options with less mess! Thank u again for the video and I’m eagerly awaiting the next!❤

Hallo Donna ! Some problem happened with my Paypalaccount so that I lost my memebership and all the membershipvideos ! Can I see them again when the problem is solved ! Beacuse I love them ! As this new one ! I have had bad experience with acrylic paint on polymer clay. I used Liquitex on a bead and cured it but the paint remained sticky for 6 months ! And on another one I had made an impression and painted the low parts and after baking I needed to sand on the uprised parts and then I wanted to wash of the dust from the sanding and used a little brusch ( for fingers ) to clean away the dust - and the paint came of very easily ! What a disappointment ! It was not Kato-clay, maybe that´s why !

Sadly, paint formulas vary between brands and within brands. The only way to be 100% sure that any given paint will bond is to make test pieces.
@DonnaKatoArt
@DonnaKatoArt 3 ай бұрын
they even from color to color! Solveig, no worries, the tutes will always be there, they don't leave. Now, it's all chemistry, kid. I know Elise used a paint with extremely long cure time - it did eventually dry but it retained its sticky for a long time. Are you reading the members fb page because I will go there and ask everyone to include the clay they use and the paint brand. That will help everyone. Hugs, D

So in theory say if you ran a textured roller over the paint instead of cutting it with a blade it should also be able to crackle into that shape? If so that could open up so many different designs to be utilised.

It pushes the paint down into the texture. You can still see the pattern! 😊

I just tried this and could NOT get it to work :( I am using super pigmented metallics (Decoart Extreme Sheen) and applying very thinly and waiting for them to dry. These metallics are so stretchy. Everytime I ran them through the pasta machine they would NOT adhere to the clay and I ended up with paint on my rollers. It was even hard to do the cuts. I also tried to do it with metal leaf and when I ran it through the pasta machine the line cuts did not separate into nice little squares. They just all blended back together again and all the cuts vanished. I have no clue lol.
