Talented kids! I worked security at their San Diego concert in the early 70s. I stood near the stage to make sure no-one tried to rush the performers, so was close enough to see their facial expressions. Donny's voice broke on a high solo, and one of his brothers gave him a nasty stare. It was quite hot on stage, and he was already sweating, but now even more. He kept singing, took a handkerchief out of his back pocket, wiped his face dry, then threw it out into the audience. The crowd was largely made up of junior high age girls. The ones near where he tossed it got up to try to grab it and started screaming. Soon the entire audience was standing, screaming, and clapping. Donny's slight error and great cover got him a standing ovation in the middle of the show. His expression changed from guilt to all smiles, as he grabbed the microphone and said with passion "I love you San Diego".

I looked just like him when I was a kid.. But my mom and dad and the cruel world destroyed my happiness, and my beautiful sensitive loving soul. Total irony, I was considered the weird kid, one of the most hated bullied kids in school, until high school, then they left me alone, but then in junior high and high school all the girls hated me, they said I was ugly, I could not get a girlfriend till I was out of school and moved away. How sad and ironic of how it should have been. Now I am all alone in this cruel world..

I, for one, consider that Donny Osmond's rendition of the song "Young Love" - which topped the UK charts in August of 1973 - was superior to the original, by Tab Hunter (which got to number one some 16 years previously, in 1957). It should not be forgotten that Donny Osmond had no less than THREE number one singles in the UK before he reached the age of 16. That was a remarkable achievment, by any standards, so it was.

One thing that this song has over other early Donny songs is that it was spared Don Costa's usual over-the-top arrangements. Just a guitar and the basics, better suited for a singer this age, than all those damn violins that are in all the others, sounding like a freakin' Disney soundtrack. Which is fine if you're Bambi.
