My dad used to sing and play this for me every night before bed before my mom and I left. This is one of the best memories I have of him. He changed lips to cheek and told me I was his glimmering girl. He played guitar beautifully, just like this recording. I miss him sometimes, though I often feel guilty for it. He wasn’t a good father to me or a good husband to my mom, but I cannot believe that he was not a good man.

Did his best with the mind he had... I'm the same with my own father. I love him so much, and I'm not sure why.

I think that Donovan, turning this poem into music, reached one of the top of inspiration flows in the history of music

Whatever form this magnificent poem is presented in, it always reminds me of my late wife, and in a bittersweet way, gladdens my heart.

I was watching Star Trek; Enterprise and they referred to this poem. I'm a Yeats fan but didn't know this one. Fantastic.

A truly fine union of poetry, music and imagery. "But is there any comfort to be found? Man is in love and loves what vanishes, What more is there to say? .................." W.B. Yeats 'Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen'

This is just beautiful, and very touching, and the graphics are great. I would also recommend Ruth Barrett and Cynthia Smith's version, which is even more "Otherworldly". Both are wonderful.

I wish out to the hazel wood Because a fire was in my head And I cut and peeled a hazel wand And hooked a berry with a thread And when white moths were on the wing And moth-like stars were flickering out I dropped a berry in a stream And caught a little silver trout.

Yeats was a mystical Irish poet who wrote obscure and eliptical verse...not to be read literally. Donovan is a Glasgow boy frae Maryhill who is brilliant and whacko in turns (o)

donovans name is donovan phillips leitch (not phillip leitch donovan) phillips being his mothers maiden name - and this song is one of the better ones on the H.M.S. album.

Molto meglio la versione dei Waterboys. Altro livello, perché rende il livello di aulicità della poesia di William Butler Yeats!

@yoginipeacelove Please don't be offended, this isn't personal but under every Donovan video I've watched today I found a comment like this and by now I am a little irritated. Those who read books and listen to music like this might not be the majority of our generation but it doesn't really make you that special either. And, most importantly, WE DO HAVE REAL MUSIC. It might be a littel harder to find but it is there.
