As a trainer, I agree, this is NOT a dog suitable for work. This dog will need to overcome a lot to just be a pet. This is not because she was abused, this is her. I have seen it numerous times.

@Mad180Gamer I used to do security work for a woman who is a top level trainer here and I know that you can't look at a dog for 4 minutes and make any assumptions about it. Obviously the guy in the video has done a lot more than that but there are a number of tests to do when selecting a pup for security training. Here in the UK the dog will be obedience trained long before any security training starts at around a year old and then some pups who looked like they would make excellent security dogs fail when put under pressure. We don't know whether this pup was purchased to work in protection or as a pet and if it was as a pet then it's good the owner's have taken steps to correct her nerves as much as possible. I agree with what one poster said about with enough hands on because there are very few dogs that's behaviour can't be corrected enough to be a pet, especially as young as she is. She's not going to work in security and the breeding shouldn't be repeated if she's not a one off.

I can agree with that. Honestly the breeder [if this is a breeding issue and the dog isn't just scared of new people and new surroundings. Who knows how long this pup has been with the owners] shouldn't repeat the breeding. But just because a dog is a bit anxious and scared naturally doesn't mean you should just skip it for the "perfect PrOUd guard dog" it's like saying all black men are murders or dangerous. It's. Just. Not true. It's. just. Not. Right. This is like going up to a naturally shy kid and just hugging them or going into there space while they are literally shaking to death and crying or stiff. You just wouldn't. Why does it have to be the different for animals?!? Why do we treat them like tools instead of companions. Trust. Trust. Trust. Take it slow. I once saw a scared kitten out in a parking lot that had apparently been there for months this lady told me and she couldn't get five feet close to it. I spent four to five hours just sitting there, feeding it until it let me get two inches from it. Aware but relaxed. In the end I moved to fast and the trust I spent all day building collapsed. I regret getting eager. I thought I was helping it by trying to get it out as fast as possible. But sometimes you just have to be patient. The same for dogs. Show them you are of no threat. Take it slow. Go by their terms and keep them comfortable. If that means not petting your dog for a year then boo hoo. Get over it. In the long run it'll be worth the wait. Because instead of a loyal servant, in the end you'll get a companion. A best friend. One that would die for you by free will rather than following a command. However this is a case by case situation. If the dog is overly aggressive because of anxious tendencies and tends to nip or bite even without provoking or invading space then do what you must to keep both you and the dog safe. If that means a professional trainer then so be it. And I know I'm not a trainer. I'm not claiming to be. I've just grown up around animals my whole life and have train all sorts including cats and dogs. Hell, my CAT is basically a service animal for me when I go into personal things. I didn't teach him that. Again, what I might be saying may be false. However from my experience so far I'll stick by my opinion. Again I'm NOT a professional trainer and I never intended to insinuate that I was. Please, have a nice day and take care of your four legged friends ^^

@@yuliyavlasik4811 Sure, but that's rare. It's not where most dogs like this end. It's one of the reasons I'm for "adopt, don't shop" when it comes to family pets. If you want a pet, not a working dog, adopt. If you want a working breed, please do your homework. I'm on my second dog (she's 7, the other one died at nearly 12), and they were both muts, off the street. They were puppies from shelters, and they both made great family dogs. Heck, one of my neighbours was convinced we were very fancy and had a miniature labrador, they wanted one too. She's not a miniature labrador, she's a full black coat mutt. They went the "fancy breed" way anyway, and guess what? They don't have a dog anymore. We nearly took theirs out of pity, but realised she had a dog agression issue we were not equipped to handle. I thought about keeping her for myself, as I don't live with my parents anymore, but that dog needs more than what my one bedroom apartment could offer. That dog wasn't even a year old yet. She went into a pound and was soon deemed not suitable for adoption by "newbies". Then bit a couple of people on a nasty incident during her first trial weekend at her would be house, and was put down by court order, because the would be owners were sued - the dog lunged at a child. I may be biased now, because of the above mentioned, but I wish breeders would hold on to such puppies for longer, and not just hand them over like this.

I've had three German Shepard's, including the current one, Heidi. My wife vetted the breeders before we went to see them, and in each case the Mother and Father were present. They had great temperment, and the puppies were lively and eager to engage with us. In fact, the last breeder (Heidi's) had US vetted to make sure the dog was going to a good home. It actually made me feel good that she cared that much about the dogs. In each case, we got very even tempered, loving, and loyal dogs. Also, the first two were very healthy right up to the point that they passed away. Dutchess was 11 years old, while Gretchen was with us for 14 years. Heidi is now 10, and spry as ever. So yes, you are absolutely correct. The Breeder is so very important to the equation. Thank you for making a video like this, I think it should help people thinking of getting a dog from a breeder (Any breed, any breeder) to ask questions and observe the dogs ahead of time.

I work in a veterinary clinic and boarding/daycare facility and I see GSDs like this every single day. In 3 years working in this field I’ve met exactly 2 Shepard’s that weren’t aggressive, fearful, and anxious out of their minds. One was a previous therapy dog, and one had been coming to our daycare since she was a puppy so she’s well socialized and very friendly. So many of them are gorgeous but are so neurotic that I never want to be around them because they’re so powerful and can cause a lot of damage when lashing out out of fear.

It's the reason I never got a GSD because I assumed they all were "skiddish" and snappy like this. People always say that if animals are like this they must have been beaten. Wow. That's awful. My GSD, who I got from a breeder, had the weakest nerves of the litter, and she was nowhere near this skittish and insecure. And still, teaching her to be confident. relaxed, and predictable in a variety of situations has taken me every day of the 2 years I've had her, and there are still a couple of situations where I know she'll be nervous and I have to be careful. I agree that this is a breeding issue. The very last thing you want is a GSD with weak nerves like this. If this poor girl doesn't get a lot of help, she's going to be a biter for sure, and we all know what that usually means for GSDs.

The AKC is one of the biggest problems when it comes to a dog's genetics. They breed more for color confirmation rather than breeding for working potential. @@kole6146 A lot of those KNPV lines are mixes too. They breed for working ability first. I have considered a Dutchie, but they are hard to come by, especially the good ones. Though being a lesser known breed I don't think they have the degree of issues that GSDs do. Where did you get your dog from? Yes, AKC registration means nothing, but the dog's parents are registered, not a certificate of quality like many think.

Super smart. Loving, loyal, and most of all extremely athletic and fierce when you turn him on. Dutchies and mal's seem to for the most part have a cleaner bill of health too. It's mainly because even if they are from both breeds they choose the right ones to get the perfect dog. They basically breed terminator's that will never ever give up. The main reason all the elite military units use them. There are still good gsd line's out there, but they are very expressive and hard to come by.

This is our exact story. We got a beautiful GSD boy at 9 weeks old. Right away he was afraid to have anyone pet him. We had to tell people they weren't allowed to pet him, and local trainers told us that that is okay. That its just his temperament. As he grew this behavior escalated to lunging on walks and barking and going crazy anytime anyone came to my house. Then he started lunging at house guests until we had to muzzle him when we had guests. We continued to train him, then he lunged through my husband's legs and bit someone making a delivery to our house. We are so happy we found a working breed rescue to take him in and rehabilitate him and place him in a safer situation. Our hearts are still broken. We miss him so much. Our kids loved him we loved him so much. We still do. And we are happy he is in a safe situation.

My current GSD mix was like this when I rescued her in Spain at about 3 months old. She was so bad it took me 3 months to get her to walk on a leash. We got her to overcome most of her fears but it took me working with her everyday from 04:30 AM until 6 AM when i would put her up in her kennel and I went to work for the day. My friends' wives would come over and let her out of her cage and give her treats and love but no training. This mix helped her come out of her shell and i brought her everywhere to socialize her with people. I trained her to become a pet therapy dog when she was about 2 years old and she absolutely excelled at greeting elderly people in nursing homes. We eventually were allowed to see elderly people who were terminally ill where only staff and family were allowed to enter. She and I were some of the last beings those terminally ill people saw before they passed away. She is now 10 years old and literally a living Teddy bear with zero protection drive. Not all GSD are protection driven and need training to find their place in our world.

We've worked with them from day one and both have terrible nerves. Their mother was like that and most of the two litters. I love them to death and they've been great companions for us, but we have soooo much more work ahead of us. They'll never be the bombproof Shepherds they're expected to be. I was incredibly irritated when someone in my training class commented on their shyness and implied I hadn't done enough training and socializing when I told him that it was a breeding issue. I don't own a German Shepherd, but I have a mini schnauzer that attacks men and other animals on sight, especially when I am around. We got him at a little less than 2 months old because the person that bred him just wanted to get it over with. As soon as we got home we socialized him with our 5 other dogs, and did just fine. He absolutely loves my younger brother since he took part in raising him. He gets at least 2 months older and he starts attacking all of our dogs for absolutely no reason(sorta leaves our one female alone until she makes the wrong move). Tries to attack my guy friends and my older brother, whom he is unfamiliar with. We knew a friend who got a puppy from the same litter, and their dog was exactly the same as ours. People automatically assume that my dog has been abused by men or traumatized by other animals, but since I known him his whole life I know that is not true. Later the breeder told our friends(because they were relatives) that the mother of that very same litter is exactly the same way. We put him in training camp, and we still train him because that violence is in his nature. We want him to have a normal life. I don't care what people say, Genetics plays a HUGE role in a dog's behavior! I'm not a dog trainer, but even I can see that. Pretty ridiculous to see so called "experienced dog trainers" sit here telling this man otherwise. And don't just assume a dog has been abused because of the way they behave. He doesn't attack on sight anymore but he is always on edge at tries to bite if anyone or anything moves too fast. Still... I am proud of his progress.

The Woof Pack I met a GSD like the way you described yours in a new client consultation today, The dog was SUPER vicious toward me and my dog., In 15 minutes, I had the dog (I took over the leash and handling) in a perfect sit position while my client walked my dog around us. Basically she was TERRIFIED (all genetics, not from a bad experience or whatever) but when she behaved the way you described your dog - wanting to “eat everyone”. She was snarling, pulling, lunging, barking, all the stuff a scared dog does. But the owners did what you are doing, working on it one step at a time. unfortunately you might be making some progress but realistically, you are letting your dog get away with that behavior for too long now. In the case of this GSD, she learned to do this behavior not because she was scared so much as she reacted as it being a learned behavior, or, she might just have fun doing it. My point - if you work with your dog correctly, stopping the behavior won’t take more than a few minutes and the dog will NEVER do it again,. You aren’t in the SF Bay Area of CA, are ya? I’d help you!

@The Woof Pack @Beth Koenig is likely right, many dogs like this will come good in the end but they need leadership, and taking baby steps can really drag things out and make it harder to get where you want to be. My first dog was a rescued 7 month old border collie cross, very like the dog in the video, pretty much feral, BUT he had such good bite inhibition that I was able to learn to work him without risk of being hurt, and I was a complete novice. If I’d gotten on top of his first reactive episode straight away, I would have avoided many months of stress and worry with him, but I eventually got the right advice and the right tools and he has come along well, although still very nervous if new situations.

Same, when we got our stray she was worse but it does seem like there is something innate in her as well making her anxious. Sadly we have had to start using a muzzle when she's around other people or dogs. Not because she's an aggressive dog, but because high levels of anxiety means that a dog can behave unexpectedly and lash out. And while I would love for her to go muzzle free so she can more easily socialise with other dogs, in the end we are responsible for her and we can't just wait to see if she even ends up really hurting someone (or some dog) due to fear.

@rozannaedwro934 in many ways that's the way these types of dogs are. If they aren't socialized early with other animals they have a high pretty drive otherwise. If they aren't socialized with people they only are good and protect those they consider family. I always get my shepherds young and train them, mine are trained to be part of the family though and not as guard or working dogs. If you continue to socialize her, hopefully she will get better. I also do this with my friends adult shepherds, the ones I didn't see grow up, but I made sure it was OK to give them treats or toys and I do each time I visited for a while until they trusted me. Now they are fine with me

This is how my beagle is. She was bred for hunting, but has an awful build, has trouble listening, and was eventually dumped at a shelter. When we got her she was scared to be on a leash, and literally scared of her shadow. We’ve had her for 3 years now, and she is still scared of many things, but now knows that, as long as her people are around, she can come to them when she’s scared. She now loves being a leash because she knows she gets to go places. Honestly, it took months of working with her everyday to get to like a leash. She’s nervous when getting a harness on, but loves life afterwards. She has never bitten anyone, and has only growled a few times. I’m hoping that she will continue getting more confident everyday. Hope everything works out with this dog. Would love to see her once she’s more confident

Thank you for putting this out there. I’ve been training dogs for over half a century. What really gets me are breeders who take down payments on yet unborn litters, and pups bought sight unseen, or unmet. Breeders these days will sell anything as not only a good bloodline, but naturally a good dog. This couldn’t be farther than the truth. There’s a good reason why people use to put down inferior pups. Prior to the elite created kennel clubs, breeders kept only very task oriented pups. Then kennel clubs sought conformity of looks rather than being task oriented. This rendered all other breeders fully functional lines unsellable, thus killing off those lines as they sought one solitary breeder’s line. An absolute travesty ! I myself am looking for another Working Bullmastiff after my last passed at 14. It seems an almost impossible task to be honest. Very few breeders breed for function. I hope you keep making the public aware of this, and much, much more. I’ve subscribed to your channel in hopes you have more awareness than the vast majority of so-called “ trainers “, utilizing realistic psychology, not elite manipulated psychology methods. Remember this, true symbiosis should not be gained through treats. This is a slave mentality. Take away the trigger, and you will have rebellious behavior. A true alpha earns their place of pack trust, just like love, respect, and trust are earned, and freely given. It cannot be forced or bought. The place of the alpha is a trusted individual. Trusted to always do what is best for the pack, not their self.

Thank you for a great video, I have had 4 GSD, and two of them were just like the dog in this video, and I got all of those song and dance story of about why they acted this way. I currently had a male that was this way when we got him, he was six months old, I am sure his owners couldn't deal with this behavior. When we first saw him we should of ran the other way, but we didn't understand this behavior. Hw is going to be 4 next month. We took him to basic training at first, but he was more than we could handle, and we heard the song and dance stories. We were told that he needed a trainer that would deal with aggressive dogs, so we set out to find one, and after meeting people who didn't know how to deal with his problem, we kept looking. We found a trainer that would take him for board and train in her home. After about a month, he came back home with some great instructions, and he is doing much better. He has no fear of loud noise, but hates other people, he was to tear them apart, we are working on that it is a very slow process, he likes other dogs, and played well with the trainers little tiny dogs, he understood to play very gentle with them. A while ago he got out the front door, and I chased him for about 1 1/2 hours, I was worried he would bite someone, so I kept my distance from him, and just let him do his thing, when he encountered anyone he would run up to them and give them a good sniff. He ran into the park which was full of little kids, I thought is was going to end poorly, however he just ran around giving those little kids a gentle sniff. Sorry for going on so long, but I just wanted you to know that I got what you said in the video, and I do understand about other people wanting to say things like "oh that dog was abused by a man", or whatever, I guess it makes a better story. Keep the great work, and great videos, you have a lot of wisdom and it needs to be shared with the people. Thanks again!

She might have a pretty face but those back legs are a wreck. As far as temperament goes, I think you put it nicely at 3:10 "We shouldn't be trying to get the dog up to a point where it can just be handled". There is a difference between a dog that was abused or that has lived its life as a stray and a dog that has a weak temperament due to poor breeding. You can only do so much for a neurotic dog, it definitely won't succeed as a working animal.

A lot of bad 'backyard breeders' don't let the puppies and mother interact naturally, often selling them on too young, or overbreeding the mothers so they're not in good health to properly nurture their young. Even if the puppies aren't genetically predisposed to a nervous disposition, that produces nervy puppies that are mouthy/chew/bite a lot, that are afraid of humans as they haven't had enough positive human interaction when young and haven't observed their mothers being positive around humans, and which haven't been exposed to the world in age-appropriate stages so things are very overwhelming for them. Add to that the inbreeding that goes on, people breeding for looks (often for aspects of looks that are damaging to the animal; bad hindquarters in GSDs, the facial structure of pugs, chihuahuas with bulging eyes, etc.) instead of for being a good all-round animal including good health and good temperament, and then you get a mess of a puppy and it's cruel.

The key to finding a reputable breeder would be going through their dogs, if the website doesn’t have these following components move onto the next. - Previous liters produced - Positive reviews - Pictures of parents along with descriptions - Breeding motives - History/years of experience. These are very important things, if you’ve got yourself a website with all of those look for videos with their dogs or breeding pair and pay attention to behavior. Yes, you can correct behavior like this.. but it takes a lot of time, effort and in most cases money for training. Which is why you should find yourself a proper breeder, and pick a breed that is great for you and your lifestyle. I hope this can help :)

I have a brother and sister from the same litter that have literally spent every day together and have had basically the same experiences. From the very beginning as 8 week old pups she was always more nervous, is very reactive to men on first meeting and flinches at everything. Her brother is the complete opposite. At least for family pets we can cope with it, but I would hate to see her in the body of a 40kg german shepherd - that kind of thing can be disastrous in the wrong (or even the right!) hands.

In the wrong hands, they could continue into severe fear aggression and end up in much worse condition. These people are focusing on getting her to a point where she can be handled so the owners don't have to worry about this and can handle it, even though it will never be fully cured.

@@anthonywashington2492 Wrong again, all GSDs bred for whatever purpose should be bred for good nerve first & foremost. Bad nerve and you get anywhere from fear biters, spook dogs, inappropriate aggression, fear of thunderstorms, shy dogs, etc.. You can never trust a dog like that, most especially not around kids. It's the biggest problem in the breed today & why the breed has such a bad reputation with many people. In contrast a GSD with solid nerve is a dream dog. I have one laying next to me right now that I can take anywhere, is naturally protective, but you never see the aggression without a real threat. Will work till he drops for me & has a great off switch in the house and lives with a cat, total stable dog in all environments he gets put in. He was confident & pushy as a pup, would run up & greet you, not in flight like this dog.

@@JordanK1010 Yes you did a great job describing the perfect GSD aperantly that pup is not but he can be socialized to a certain extent and placed somewhere. And thats what you get when people don't imprint early and just leave pups in a pen until they get 6 weeks old and sale to people who don't know any better
@JordanK1010
@JordanK1010 3 жыл бұрын
@@anthonywashington2492 Yes, early imprinting is very important, but that is not the problem with this dog. All the imprinting & socializing in the world will not fix weak nerves. Hopefully she can be trained enough & managed to be safe. If the owners do not carefully manage her environment & she bites a child well you know what will happen then. She'll be given up or put down. She's already biting the owner & she is not mature yet. This is not puppy landsharking either by the way he described it. She should be over that stage anyhow by her age. I have seen mild nerve issues which can be dealt with, but this dog is pretty bad.

A tip to help people trying to choose a puppy. Buy a book called The Art of Training a Puppy. It’s by a group of monks that breed and raise Shepherds. They have a test that can help determine a puppy’s temperament, even as young as four weeks. I used it and got a very confident and smart puppy, though he is an Aussie Lab cross. Also do not buy Aussie Pyrenees mixes. They are genetically anxious.

Yes, I agree. Her movement on her back legs appeared uncoordinated and her legs looked very weak at the back also. Today's GSD doesn't have the strong square outline that it had a hundred years ago. Now the hind quarters have sloped back and sink down so much that veterinarians often describe the breed as half dog, half frog.

A) dog was abused B) how would u feel when u see all your brothers and sisters are just taken from you some dogs take longer than others to feel safe C) dog probably was kept in the barn with little to no people contact until it was to late... never tell someone there's no hope for that dog. Yeh it's the breeders fault. But all u need is a little more love and patience and that dog would be more loyal to u than any other dog. These are the type of dogs I rescue. I have seen over and over again dogs similar to this who I know for sure have never been abused or kept in a barn or anything like that. BUT - have a mother and/or father with similar temperament. This is genetic, period. That doesn't mean the dog is beyond rescue and can't be rehabilitated. But in the end if people would be better educated about the genetics of the mentality of dogs they would give their money to breeders who focus on the right things...

The only dogs you never see surrendered to a rescue or a shelter is a WELL-bred dog. This dog did not come from a reputable breeder who understands that temperament, health, and breed standard is more important than how 'pretty' a dog is or how much money they can sell the pups for. If your breeder doesn't OFA, Pennhip, or have any titles for their dogs in any sports, run away. Run far away.

Its genetics, i rescued a young black labrador, and he was full of confidence and fearless from the beginning He was small, only 80-90 pounds, but would defend his life and your life viciously and fearlessly here, sadly there are lots of aggressive pitbulls, boxers, etc running loose Many times we where attacked by those breeds and he just reck them on pure rabid visus behavior, same for criminals, once a "cholo" aproached me with bad intentions and he just charged towards his neck, no one had taught him that He was very happy and loved to play with people and dogs, but when he identified an evil human or dog he would just metamorph into a small little deamon lol Its all carved in their genes, most breeders go for looks, ruining the dog's traits and filling them with congenital diseases

You say this is unacceptable - well, welcome to the world. You sound almost surprised that a GSD came out this way, being a complete nervebag. I have almost 2 decades of daily work and experience selecting pups, raising, training, and selling them to police with being a dual purpose police K9 every puppy I work with as their main goal. I hate American GSDs. I hate the way they are bred in the states with their horrible conformation and even WORSE temperament and social ability. AKC RUINED THESE DOGS IN THE USA. I LOVE Czech Shepherds. I love bots West and East Germany working line GSDs. I always import my pups from Europe if I am getting a pup to start in law enforcement. I lived in Europe a few years ago. I bought a 1-way ticket out of CA and off to Europe I went. I trained with the best trainers in the world out there, experiencing some of the best dogs as well. I LOVED the German Shepherds I saw out there. It is funny - when a GSD is well bred and solid as a working dog, THEY ARE GORGEOUS!! So you CAN have your cake and eat it too! Back to what I was saying though. Because of people like this “breeder” here, the shepherds have been FUCKED so bad in the US that they literally are not capable of doing police work anymore. Pups that are bred in the US who have decent traits are usually the puppy from the parents are imported and the puppies are bred on US soil,

Oops, I wasn’t done. Anyway - your video has an awesome message. Very well done. But please do not be surprised about this dog - you might be a BREEDER with intention to better or maintain the breed through your pups, but you are a hay in a needle stack. We need people like YOU who understand these dogs are working dogs and police work is right up their alley. But please stop sounding surprised. In almost 2 decades of training police dogs and the average family pet for clients, this is primarily what I see in GSDs. I met yet another one like this dog today in a consultation. It is heartbreaking and so sad but it is the truth here int he US. And because of that, the GSD breed as a whole is fucked and is almost extinct in police work. They are dwindling as agencies turn to Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. Awesome video though. What an IDIOT comment someone said: “There is nothing wrong with this dog, just get a professional trainer.” Uhhhhh. tf?

Michele Dietrick That may be so. But answer me this, if it were a person, would we be so judgmental about such person and say this is “unacceptable” that person A is this way? Why can’t we just accept that each dog is different and let them be. I understand that this dog might not become a working dog like many German shepherds but why can’t she be simply a companion animal with a human that connects with her as a kindred spirit? I would love to adopt her and give her all the love. There are no bad dogs, just bad dog-parents. I just don’t like how this dog is being spoken about in this video and may be I am not as experienced as this breeder but I am a dog person and I am entitled to my opinion.
