These burial sites are so cool, and barely anyone knows what they are. These tombs can be found all around the world mostly from the WWI- WWII era. Basically it is the highest accommodation, for a soldier that has been found with no name, or family. These guards are so serious about watching this tomb 24/7 every day because the person buried could never have made a larger sacrifice. The soldier fought for his country, and in the end, died having no one to mourn him, and no one to know who they are. Imagine if you were to do something so heroic it would drastically change your life forever, but literally no one would know it even happened, or who it happened to . Thats the price this soldier made. Its quite sad, but you understand why its such a big deal to the military and the entire nation. To not forget the fallen.

On March 4, 1921, the United States Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. On November 11, 1921, the unknown soldier brought back from France was interred inside a three-level marble tomb. The marble came from a Yule Marble Quarry located near Marble, Colorado. The marble for the Lincoln Memorial and other famous monuments was quarried there. The bottom two levels are six marble sections each and the top at least nine blocks with a rectangular opening in the center of each level through which the unknown remains were placed through the tomb and into the ground below. A stone other than marble covers the rectangular opening. .The Tomb was placed at the head of the grave of the World War I Unknown. West of this grave are the crypts of Unknowns from World War II (south) and Korea (north). Between the two lies a crypt that once contained an Unknown from Vietnam (middle). His remains were positively identified in 1998 through DNA testing as First Lieutenant Michael Blassie, United States Air Force and were removed. Those three graves are marked with white marble slabs flush with the plaza.

Move a bunch of pallets in front of the way stick three four rows of caution tape AND 4-5 signs. @Dannys998878 жыл бұрын
+Lori Anne Nice of you to consider the feelings of those people. But think about the time as late as the early 1940's, before the Army totally closed off access, when civilians could walk around the WWI marble sarcophagus and actually read the inscriptions. Or they could walk out on the far steps and admire the magnificent view. Today, that sarcophagus and the ground level plaques for the unknowns of the other wars (with their own inscriptions that the Army now keeps you from seeing) are effectively closed to public viewing. The tombs COULD be surrounded by the kind of low protective ropes that are used in the great museums of the world to protect the most rare and priceless treasures of man. And civilian Park Service employees COULD provide the same guard that they provide for all the other great Washington monuments that ARE open to the public. Instead we have this bizarre and disgusting military show guard which just LOVES it when they can humiliate civilians as they are doing here. I've been there, corralled behind the fence with the other civilians. I've seen it happen. If the Army wants to put on this ridiculous spit and polish military show, let them go elsewhere to do it, and return this magnificent monument to the people. This is in fact the property of the United States of America, and it was built and paid for by the People of the United States. Yes, my military friends, as much as you hate to think about the fact, it does belongs to the people, including the civilians who you have such contempt for.

To those trying to figure out what this is/what it is: This is at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If memory serves it resides within Arlington cemetery. It is a memorial to those missing in action (or MIA) or those who's remains could not be identified. While the guards cannot open fire on anyone (Unless there is a direct threat to their well being I imagine), they can and will detain you. The guards take their duty every bit as serious as the Queen's guard in England. I've never visited but judging from what I've seen they seem to have specific lines rehearsed for how to react to certain situations (audience getting too loud, someone stepping past the barrier or in this case, crossing the tombs).
@cj58809 жыл бұрын
isn't their a body in the tomb that is unrecognizable? Rixoli
@Rixoli9 жыл бұрын
TheAtheistSwine I don't know RIGHT off the top of my head but the remains have been replaced at least once, following the successful identity of the remains of the soldier that was placed in the tomb before. Long story short those whom are buried at the tomb are, as you said, unidentifiable. Whatever the reasoning may be.
@Fishfingers2329 жыл бұрын
Since when can the military detain civilians?
@Rixoli9 жыл бұрын
Fishfingers232 Since Arlington Cemetery is a military resting grounds. I would imagine it (or the government more specifically) has the final say there. The tombs are treated every bit as serious as the royal palace in England, walking across them is viewed as disrespectful of the highest degree. The guards don't know why civilians are approaching past the barriers. Whether it is to vandalize the tombs or merely just approaching the wrong way, it is their job to protect the tomb, if need be with their lives. They protect the remains within: Rain, shine or snow. The military CAN detain civilians trespassing on private (particularly military) property.
@Fishfingers2329 жыл бұрын
Rixoli If it's indeed military property, then I believe they can (same as MPs have authority on a military base). I was asking purely from a legal standpoint.

David Lopez-Palmerin The tomb has been guarded 24/7/365 without fail since midnight on July 2, 1938. No matter the weather there is a guard keeping watch over the Tomb. Being a Tomb Sentinel is considered one of the highest honors and the men (and a few women) who hold that position take it extremely seriously. Their uniforms, weapons, etc. are maintained to perfection. They strive for perfection in everything they do as anything less is completely unacceptable.

I am proud to know a Navy Sailor who served 3 years as a guard at the Tomb. To this day he takes the oath ALL guards take serious and to heart. These are the elite of all of our country's Armed Forces. These guards stand their post 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They stand the post through rain, snow, blistering heat, blizzards, hurricanes with dignity and honor.

They sure don't. Ever since I ETSed I found the world is too messed up. Regular Civilians don't understand what goes into being a Soldier/Sailor/Marine/Airmen or the customs that go along with being one. Our initiation into the service is a long and rewarding one. One that builds character. Some people don't understand why I cry sometimes when I hear taps, the national anthem or other patriotic songs. @JonSmith-yq1dw6 жыл бұрын
Robert Jacob not really but unfortunately we are tasked with keeping peace through the world. I know you're going to say yeah that was a stupid war that was not needed but I'm talking about the day today. If you look at how many wars there were before WW2 and then afterwards they have drastically went down and the only correlation that you can come with is because of us presents everywhere. Now to my unfortunately comment is because I wish Europe and some of the countries in Asia would bring a more solid and numerous approach. look at a lot of countries in Europe their army numbers are very low comparative because they know that Uncle Sam will come to the rescue if need be. Look what happened when Trump said that he might take us out of NATO since the other countries aren't pulling their fair share. Well after that there is talks and serious leanings to making a EU Army and having those European armies have more power and connection to each other. I wish that we would just bring all our troops home from everywhere. no country in the right mind has the reason balls Logistics or will survey the US mainland. so if this happens I guarantee you the world will go into a more chaos form. Will the world burn to its knees no but the Middle East would actually Beyond fire even more than it is today. Iran would start doing whatever it wanted Saudi Arabia would be doing more Israel would be claiming whatever they wanted the Russians would probably start taking more ex Soviet land and Soviet countries China wood cut off shipping lanes build more Islands more than likely take back Taiwan Maybe back North Korea into unifying the Korean peninsula and trying to take the Japanese power down right away since they would definitely build up an army if we left. Pakistan and India probably would go into a full-out war against each other since there's no middle man holding what little piece there already is and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. what country do you live in? I am honestly curious, I can tell you one thing your country would be either voluntarily or involuntarily affected by this maybe just a little bit maybe by a lot depending on where you live. Let's put it this way do you think China right now or better yet under Mao or the former Soviet Union would be as relatively peaceful as the US has been over these decades if they had the same power? Sorta Fresh Does the phrase "Known only to God" mean anything to you?
@SortaFresh7 жыл бұрын
lonecrapshooter67 I'm not a really religious person. I don't know a lot about God and I'm not going to pretend it do. I'm 15. Whether that be an excuse or not, I just want to know what it stands for. No disrespect towards anyone or anything was meant to be implied.
@lonecrapshooter677 жыл бұрын
Sorta Fresh oh sorry ! the Unknown Soldier typically is a soldier ,Airman, or sailor who was killed in war and the remains are not identifiable....they typically designate one from each war and have a sacred burial site ,guards,etc ,as a display of Honor and sacrifice .

As pristine as everything is, it seems like they could get the concrete on the plaza a little cleaner. The red rust color is distracting. Maybe a quick power wash once a week. Not being disrespectful. Just a thought. Much love and respect given here.

When people walk the same exact line 24/7 365 days a year for over 70 years, there gets to be some wear on the ground. In my opinion I think it's cool, I would love to see and walk in the same place my brothers had walked for 70+ years. There's a lot of history in those marks

That's not a toilet. That's a one-man-stall for taking breaks or for when the weather is too dangerous to be under, like intense rain or hail. The guards that are given the opportunity to serve there rarely ever let themselves succumb to the needs of their bodily functions until their service is done.

Because we're no longer on a Gold standard. During WWII the British Crown Jewels and Magna Carte were stored there. During the Cold War large amounts of morphine and other medications were stored there in case of an atomic strike on the US. I'm sure there's stuff in there, just may not be gold, silver, etc

The Unknown Soldier Sentinel Position is a position of extremely High Honor. Highest Guard Honor on American Soil, higher than guarding the president or anything. These men live very strict lives. No drinking, Partying, smoking nothing. They live up to the strictest standards of Any Military in the world. When they are off the guard, they rest then get ready for the next guard. The uniforms are immaculate, perfection with every seem and fold. Most Sentinels do a 2 to 4 year service in that position due to the extremely strict protocol. Once you have Tomb Guard Sentinel Duty on your resume (Which is very rare), you will never have to worry about living comfortably.

This is at Arlington National Cemetery, the former home of Robert E. Lee, general of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Lincoln took Lee's home from him in order to bury the dead Union men who had fought to free the slaves. Is it your intent to shit on their memories because you hate black people, or is it just because you're too damned stupid to read a book?

There is absolutely nothing "comical" about this incident. It is a clear failure of parents to demonstrate the proper respect in our nation's capital, and they should know better. Good grief. Clearly, none of these people have worn a uniform besides one that requires them to serve french fries.
@jkoneman7 жыл бұрын
Get over yourself. They obviously did not know they were in an area where they should not be.  They did not jump over the rail like some of these other have.  As soon as they were told not to walk there they IMMEDIATELY went back the way they came. You can't ask for anything else.

My heart hurts when people come and talk loudly and have no respect. The men who are lost and not coming home, the men who died and came home. This place has more reverence then the Vatican. Respect what these soldiers gave. The very soul of themselves. The very future of themselves. Everything that we each take for granted they will never have. Give the respect they deserve.
