We are champions of the DIY lifestyle, BUT sometimes it truly pays to have a PRO handle certain jobs. Well, I believe that window tinting is one of those things that you do not want to get involved in. So, to put this to the test we brought a Pro down to the garage and we're about to go toe to toe ... why are you still reading this? Go press play
Huge thanks to our dude Brandon for coming out, follow him on IG

Years ago a friend had a tinting shop, he made it look so easy. I'm a die hard DIYer with everything from carpentry to electrical, engine builds to car stereo system install. I have a Bridgeport mill and a lathe along with oxy/acetylene, mig, tig and arc welders plus I roll my own ammo incl. 2 wildcat cartridges. But window tint, I let a pro do it. By the time I get good enough so that my work looks as good as a pro I will have spent double, triple or more on tint than what I'd have paid the pro to do it not to mention the time I'd have to invest. Anyone can learn to do it but if you're not going to do it for profit it's just not worth it.

Fascinating! The place I worked at, we were using a method to not require pulling out the interior parts, because due to heat and age and model/make of the car, it could put us under liability for parts breaking because plastic becomes brittle over time. Terms like bubbles, fingers, and the use of baby soap all were in line with what they taught me. I also liked how quickly that dude could hand-plot. My daddy was so experienced in tinting he would just look at the window and cut it on the windshield in like ten seconds, I would watch him. It was crazy. To anyone who is thinking about getting into window tinting, be careful, or else you'll be looking at the tint on every car, and if you see a car with a bubble or peeling tint you'll be tossing and turning in bed for the next few weeks.

I run my own tint business out in Kansas, I do encourage people to try if they wish too. It takes longer that 4-5 cars to learn. You have different vehicles with different shapes of windows with different curvatures. It took me about a year to fully develop a true understanding and getting out of tight situations in a calm manner. Being able to think on the spot and fix it without getting any debri inside is truly a tough thing to starting off to develop. If you want a true challenge tint a rear window on a 4runner that rolls down, charger, or a c6 corvette

I learned to tint by looking at tinting videos on KZfaq. I’d say go for it. You could earn money tinting other peoples car. It’s hard so you’ll need patience but it’s worth it in the end.

The cost of a ceramic tint can be $700 or more for a 4 door car. And worse, the shops charge per window. Which means, if your rear and/or front doors, have a little cutout window, boom, that's another window. And these days, you can order precut tint. In all reality, the cutting/measuring is THE HARDEST part. The actually application is not that difficult. It takes time, and patience, and some practice for sure. I've tinted my skylights and some house windows, due to excessive summertime heat from the sun. The actual application came out really good, no bubbles or peeling. The cutting was harder, but even that wasn't too bad. Not perfect, but pretty decent. Just practice on a couple house windows to get the feel. Then order the pre-cut tint.

I learned by practicing with cheap tint. Like bottom barrel. It allows you to mess up and start over with cheap stock and mistakes are so much more obvious with bad tint. When you move on to an actual quality tint, it feels like the easiest thing in the world by comparison and you save a ton on practice material. So much of it is angle and pressure based that the only way too learn is experience. Some cheap tints will slide right off with even a little too much solution for example. Some shrink more with heat gun and can allow small scrapes to even out. Some if you wrinkle it, well ur boned. Throw it away. 100% pay someone if you're not interested in learning the skill. It's not a first try kinda deal.

As someone with 25% ceramic all the way around with a 5% ceramic strip on my windshield…. ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY! I’ve got leather interior so I’m the summer (I live in the south) it got REAL hot. Just going into the store real quick was long enough to make the car feel like an oven. After getting the ceramic, I come back out to a still cool car. *also privacy is wonderful with it*

It took me 1 roll of cheap auto zone tint to figure out how to do it correctly. I've tinted my last 2 cars with real tint purchased off the internet because it was big enough to cover my rear window in 1 piece. I highly recommend doing it yourself. Once you figure out how to use a heat gun to shrink it correctly you'll be able to knock out any window you come across.

I first went with carbon tint on my Jeep, and was stoked, but then on my wife's car we did a ceramic triple layer tint, and I can never go back to the cheaper stuff. It is incredible at blocking out heat in the desert heat, the sun can be directly on you through the window and you wont feel the heat. If you can, save up your pennies and go with the top of the line stuff, especially if you live in a hot climate.
