That started to change when GM decided to remove (slowly over time) the freedom of its brands to design and build their own vehicles to cut cost (IIRC that was in 1963 or there about). By 1971 for example all transmissions were a 'corporate' design th350,th400, etc. Full sized cars across all brands also used Oldsmobile rear ends where previously they had their own rear ends, etc. That use of corporate parts and corporate engineering across all brands is what led to the watering down of brand identity and eventual demise of Pontiac, Olds, and Buicks unknown identity today. Think early 2000s a Pontiac could be bought with the same drivetrain as a Chevy or Buick. GM is responsible for Buicks image problems because of that imo

Yeah when he said that I was like “uhhhh no”. I mean we would like that because of course we would we’re car enthusiasts. But the sea of crossovers has better money potential than tapping into what is currently a dying market. Don’t get me wrong, a sports car would do great to improve Buick’s image and perception in the US. But that alone is not going to change anything as far as Buick’s sales in the US. Now what I would do is axe all the Buick sedans (which has already been done). Redesign all the crossovers for the next generation and make them EV only. A sports car would help Buick with their image as well so I’d also introduce one. But it must also be an EV only and in its inception must not cost more than the Camaro.

Only reason they'd make a new GNX is as a halo car for a sedan/coupe (aka not blander than Toyota level CUV). So...not gonna happen sadly. I mean, look at how Ford themselves doesn't make cars anymore. The US market is quickly going back into the doldrums we had before the mid '00s where all the interesting stuff is only sold overseas (except AUS, where they killed Holden and Ford has to import Mustangs and Raptors because they killed their own iconic Falcon).

I am under 30 and just bought a 2022 Buick Envision. My reasoning was that I wanted something with a quiet, smooth ride. I initially looked at used BMW X5s (I owned one a while ago), but I was hesitant due to BMWs sketchy reliability and expensive repairs. Envision's base model also came with a nice interior, heated seats, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Not to mention, the base's sound system sounds really good. So, ask me anything.

I’m an Australian living in Singapore, and I love my Holden Commodore, but I couldn’t get it here. But then in 2017, GM stopped manufacturing Holdens in Australia. Thus, the last model Commodore (ZB) of 2017-2020 was a rebadged German built Opel Insignia B, which in China is sold as the Buick Regal - and GM does sell Opel in Singapore. When GM killed Holden completely in 2020 it was my last last chance to own a brand new Holden Commodore. While not a true Aussie Holden (plus FWD and lacking in HP), I picked an Insignia and rebadged it to have Singapore’s one and only Holden Commodore.
@cjmhall

The ZB was a cynical attempt by Holden to cash in on the brand loyalty they’d developed over decades from designing and assembling the Commodore in Australia. They may as well have just slapped a Commodore badge on a Kia.

What GM have been doing for so many years with this endless rebadging is so diluting to brands identity. The mainstream models of Chevy, Buick, Holden and formerly Opel are literally the same cars. The crossover in the thumbnail of the video is Opel Mokka in Europe. Basically Chrysler was doing the same thing in the near past and also Ford with the Lincoln Towncar, Crown Victoria, and the Mercury Marquis. In Europe we have VAG, but at least the brands are very different in terms of the design.

@@a_cook 1. Buick needs to remain in the USA in order to maintain the brand's foreign luxury image in China. It wouldn't be a desirable American brand anymore if they aren't even available in America (regardless of their status back home). 2. Prior to the 2008 financial crisis, Buicks were paired alongside GMC and Pontiac at dealers. The US government demanded that GM cut out brands; the General wanted to save GMC as it was super profitable (luxury Chevy trucks and SUV's), but it could not be sold alone. Either Pontiac or Buick had to stay. Buick was saved by offering a better and more profitable Aztek (the Buick Rendezvous), as well as having a clear and stable customer base at the time; old people. Pontiac did not have a clear customer base (on top of having in-house competition with Chevy), and according to Bob Lutz, hadn't been making ANY money over its last 12 years of existence. Lutz's plan to turn it into the "American BMW" was a huge and expensive risk that couldn't come into fruition before 2008. At the time, the US Congress wanted to kill off all GM brands, except Chevy and Cadillac. By saving Buick, GM was not only protecting Buick's brand image in China, but also saving the highly popular and profitable GMC in America.

It’s because they seemed to have been comparing their version of the rebadged cars against their stablemate (Lacrosse/Impala) or looking at EU numbers rather than comparing and competing against the likes of the obvious American(-market) competitors: Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura… or even Nissan/Infiniti… or now even Hyundai/Genesis. There is no reason that Buick’s leadership didn’t keep the Lexus brand square in their sights and keep up. Now, Lexus and Toyota make arguably the best vehicles available maintaining brand loyalty and gaining a reputation for both luxury and reliability while Buick is on life-support here with generic crossovers that seem ok on paper until the name is realized to still be related to being old and stodgy (whether true/warranted or not).

My mom bought a new Buick last year. I'm a car guy's car guy, and I see that car all the time. I've driven it on countless occasions. It's a great car, honestly. Drives well, nice fit and finish, excellent passenger space and fuel economy. You know what? I have no idea what model it is. That really says something about how ubiquitous a car it really is. Edit: It's the Encore! I think... Whichever one has a CVT, that's for sure.

Actually Oldsmobile was the brand that had the first automatic transmission - in 1940. It was the Turbo-Hydramatic transmission - which became the basis for the automatic transmissions in all GM cars by the 60s. Buick had it's own automatic transmission called the Dynaflow, but that came out the year after Oldsmobile's automatic transmission.

I think what he meant was Buick was the first to make a automatic transmission with a torque converter. The Buick dynaflow wasn't released for production cars until 1949 iirc. It was designed during WWII for tanks and the hydromatic predates the dynaflow by several years at least. At that time the dynaflow was released in production cars you had to pop the 3rd pedal or let off the gas for the transmission to shift because other automatics didn't have a torque converter. Ironically in the early 60s GM bought out the hydromatic company that made the hydromatic transmission and created arguably the most famous and populous automatic transmission in history (the th350 and th400) by combining engineering of the hydromatic and Buick dynaflow (and a modern version of the th400 is still made to this day). Im more shocked he didn't mention that Buick was directly responsible for the creation of GM and Chrysler as well as inventing things from OHV (pushrod) drivetrains, turn signals, etc.

The H4 literally was shaping up to be that answer, yet it still remains shelved as a concept. The return of the Hummer brand would’ve strengthened their forte in terms of off-road technology inspired from the military or something. Pontiac would’ve been a suitable, yet dynamic rival to Dodge’s SRT. Saturn would’ve held the respective fight towards the Japanese compacts. What do these brand have in common? They’re all valuable nameplates whose values haven’t been recognized and/or were slowly killed through rebadging.

Buick is legendary and one of my favorite car brands. They built Indy car engines and raced in nascar in the 90s. I had a 90s riviera with a supercharger in high school and I pushed that thing to its limits in every direction. It was so rugged and dependable and good in the Montana cold and snow that I bought one as a winter beater 10 years later. I never got pulled over in that car, it always got to the ski hill no matter the conditions, many music festivals and survived many questionable teenager off road expeditions to get to the camping parties. My current one got 20,000 put on it last year, hit a deer with only trim damage and just won’t die. Sadly the TourX didn't come with the V6 even though it was heavier. They could have at least made a GS version of the TourX with the V6. The most reliable car I've ever owned was a 2001 Buick LeSabre. I bought it with 23,000 miles on it for less that $10k. It was my first "nice" car. Yeah, it was a "grandpa" car, but it was big, comfortable, and it knocked down 27mpg on average running back and forth to work and even managed 30mpg during long road trips. I sold it to a coworker and it's getting close to 300,000 miles on it's original engine and transmission. It was one of only two cars that I've personally put 100,000 miles on. I currently have a 1996 Roadmaster wagon with the de-tuned version of the LT1 V8 and the car is a riot to drive. It makes wonderful V8 noises when I jump on it and my 4 year old daughter loves riding around in it and looking out the skylight over the back seat. I'd love for Buick to make some more original vehicles. They were getting there with the final generation LaCrosse, I thought it was a great looking car. Being a wagon fan, I also liked the idea and looks of the Regal TourX, but the car itself was a little lackluster and they axed it pretty fast in favor of selling bland crossovers. My whole driveway is a collection of older vehicles because I just have no interest in "cute utes", and my wife and I are in the exact age range automakers are trying to target for new car sales. Neither of us want a crossover, nor do many of our friends and relatives, which makes it a mystery why automakers are ditching cars altogether in favor of crossovers.

Maybe they appear unappreciated due to so few I see out here in California and a few of the very few are dogged out (takeovers) or end up getting parted out just because someone wants to keep the engine + trans. The 94-96 Roadmaster was Definitely a “Parts Bin” car. Big ol Buick body and interior (shared with Chevy caprice), frame and drivetrain out of a pick-up and an LT1 Engine out of a corvette. Was my first car 10 years ago and is my daily driver today. Comfy, fun, and very easy to find parts.

I remember when my dad came home with a brand new 1963 Buick Riviera. He eventually traded it for a 1965, also white with black interior. The downside was he sold his 1942 Ford Woody wagon to get it - he became VP at a company and had to look the part, instead of his former beach bum persona. Now, it's possible that a mint Riviera would command as much money today as the woody, but somehow I doubt it. GM pretty much screwed the pooch, it's a long road to rehabilitate the Buick name. BTW, I may have only been 4 years old, but I swear that woody talked to me more than once.

Small Correction, I know this isn't a history channel but I feel like this is an important point. The 1911 revolution overthrew the QING dynasty not the QIN dynasty. The Qin dynasty hasn't been around for thousands of years (221 to 206 BC). The difference in the Romanized names may be small, but they are totally different in Chinese.

I'm 66 years old and out of approx 45 four wheeled vehicles I've owned since 1973, I have owned 8 Buicks. My very first car in high school at the ripe old age of 18 was a then six year old 1967 Riviera (like the one in the beginning of this vid). I currently daily drive a "beater" '94 Regal sedan and also own a very nice, very clean 2005 LeSabre with 71K miles. I'm certainly NOT your "typical" old man who drives a Buick, I admit I'm a bit aggressive and am not afraid to put my foot down if slow pokes are in my way.

I have built more supercharged 3.8, supercharged 3.4‘s then I can remember. Absolutely one of my favorite platforms ever made was the GM 60° V6 Buick used in a lot of their 90s to end early 2000‘s front wheel drive sedans. The W chassis was also extremely comfortable and handled go fast well.

@casey360360
@casey360360 2 жыл бұрын
@@misterbuklau4053 Can it be done? Yes. Do I recommend it? No. The L32 was never designed to be a high performance engine. The one's I've had a hand in building suffered A TON of issues and ended costing a lot of time and money. Support for those engines has also all but come to an end. I recently purchased an LA1, which is just the final iteration of the 60 degree 3.4l. I was planning on installing a rocker/roller kit, little thumper cam, larger cast intake manifold, LS1 throttle body, high comp pistons, ect. I found 1 supplier that still makes all of these parts and honestly, I'd get more power for less money just swapping in an LS4 which was designed to be used on the 4T65E-HD in the 9th gen Impala SS, which means the entire swap (minus electronics) is one evening in the shop. At the end of the day, you already have an amazing RWD chassis, the options are near-endless for what you can toss in that thing. If you want to be different and use a V6, you can get a wrecked fifth-gen Camaro with the LFX 3.6 and be at 323hp right there, then skys the limit as support for that engine is growing every year. Camaro5 forums have good write ups on the whole process as well as user experiences with different kits.

Forgot to differentiate there, the mention of the LS4 was strictly in example to my specific situation with my U-body chassis. The LS4 is a transverse mount engine only. It serves as an example none the less on how easy GM made it to cross platforms.

GM is the king...when it comes to showing us amazing concept cars that we will never, ever get to see produced in any form. They've shown off many cool Buicks, like the Avenir and the Riviera. Build one of those, use it to inform and inspire a whole new product line. IMHO, they should elevate either Buick or Cadillac to the ultra-luxury segment to do battle with Bentley or Rolls, they have the engineering chops to succeed so it's all going to come down to accounting and marketing. Stop making Chevrolet the center of the world, start engineering from the top-down like VAG does.

The TourX was a bit smaller than what i'd normally want, but it was AWD and when i test drove it i averaged almost 46MPG 46MPG Just because of the way i drive not because of the EPA underestimating the fuel economy. My 2 door honda CRZ(35MPG) normally sits around 50MPG though it tanks to ~42 in the winter(mostly because regenerative breaking doesnt work), and my 6 door 96 Fleetwood limo (25MPG) normally sits around 30-35 depending on intake temps.
