In 1962, a rocket engineer named Gene Middlebrooks applied what he’d learned designing ballistic missiles to build and sell turbine-based power-adding equipment for cars. And when we say “turbine-based”, we don’t mean turbochargers. His “turbo drag axle” was a revolutionary invention that used a turbine to drive the axle of a car, which let drivers toggle their car between comfortable street ride and absolutely mind-boggling power. So why aren't we all driving on turbo axles? Today on B2B we'll explore the brilliance and the pitfalls of this by-gone work of genius.

I was a teenager back in the 60s when they started advertising the Turbonic or what ever it was named. It was advertised with a photo showing it racing a top fuel dragster....it was in a go cart. The photo had the go kart doing a wheely. Supposedly it beat the dragster. Whether that was real or not was a big issue. Since in those days a top fuel dragster would just max out a bit over 200 mph at 7 seconds (Don Garlets was the first to go over 200 mph in a top fuel dragster in a NHRA sanctioned race). I don't believe they said it did a 5 second 240mph quarter. I also find int highly unlikely they would have allowed something like that on a sanctioned race track. I always wondered if anyone actually put it on a car....or blew them and the car up with it.

Actually I have a turbonique supercharger complete with documents of test runs and correspondence between my father in law and turbonique discussing being a franchise owner. The record run in the gocart was done at Beeline Dragway in Arizona, doesn't exist anymore. My father in law holds the speed record to this day. He's not with us anymore but his stories are hilarious on how they did testing. Another is when they raced the jet powered Green Monster and the track forced him to wear a fire suit because he was sitting on a gocart next to an after burner. Anyway, great story and you didn't even scratch the surface of the insanity, like federal agents busting down doors confiscating equipment. Love to hear old racing history. Great job.

Some of the inventions in this video reminded me of the "booster engine" concept on later built steam locomotives. The rear axle (normally unpowered) had an auxiliary two piston steam engine for extra torque when starting and at low speed, powered by the steam pressure from the main boiler through flexible pipes! They actually proved to be effective in many locomotives worldwide but the invention came too little too late as diesel and electric locomotives took the market, still interesting!

The basic concept seems similar to the "cruise range extender" direct drive turbo added to the P-47 fighter of WWII. The P-47 used waste exhaust to power it vs chemical fuel, but it was directly coupled to the crankshaft. The idea was to turn wasted energy into increased range, but if they would have thought to add a combustion chamber they might have been able to use it to increase power (P-47 with an afterburner boost ?! )

What a trip to stumble across this video. I still have from as a kid, a magazine called Hot Rotor that chronicles all this stuff from Turbonique. The made several models of turbines and rockets of varying power. The model you highlight is an axil design but thy had several others that were radial. They were essentially the hot turbine of a turbocharger with one of their rocket engines combustion chambers plumbed onto the inlet. There is no reason why you couldn't run any of these units on other fuels. You'd just have to get your injectors and pressures right. Go for it!

@@jlowe5944 They are not direct injection in the CONTEMPORARY meaning which was the point here. If you call injecting in the cylinder modern direct injection then you could call antechamber injection direct as well, and thus all diesels. 71 series are purely mechanical unit injection running off a camshaft. Far from common rail injection we call direct injection now. Less precise. Removing reliance on camshaft, high injection pressure and multiple injections per cycle could quiet the 2 stroke, lower emission and increase power.
