The term "kit car" used to be a four letter word- conjuring visions of sloppy clone cars that no one in the right mind would want to drive. But the times they are a changin'. Companies like Factory Five, Superlite Cars and DF Kit Car are proving that supercar performance can be achieved in your own garage for a fraction of the cost, and a lot more elbow grease. So is a kit car the right choice for you? Well, maybe...

Hell a lot of this crosses over to a project car. I started off with a "simple" drivetrain swap and every time I tried to install something I had to fix 6 other things because the other parts were ready to fail. Had to re-make the entire fuel system because the lines were crumbling. The brake lines were plugged up so those had to go when I upgraded to discs. Some of the wiring had to be upgraded to accept the new fuel relay system. Etc.

I've taught at the Workshop School in West Philadelphia since about 2008. My background is as a machinist in a speed shop in the old days. The WS School is part of the Philadelphia Public School system and an outgrowth of West Philadelphia High School, although it has been a stand-alone, Project Based Learning high school, though still part of the Philly public school system, for about 10 years now. They have had an after school high-mileage car program going since the 1990's. One recent project was to build the FF 818 as a high-mileage car using the VW Turbo Diesel drive train instead of the Subaru WRX. We have gotten a certified 120 mpg from the car at a mileage competition at Watkins Glen. Our current project...kind of on hold since the pandemic...is to take the Catfish kit car, which is based on Miata mechanicals, and build it as an electric car. It's a very nice looking body and not trying to be a faux anything, which I like. In the first try, we simply replaced the Miata motor with an Azure electric motor we had used on another electric conversion, a Ford Focus. We used an adapter plate, an old hot rod technique, which we designed and had cut on a Haas CNC in the machine shop at Drexel. It would have worked fine but it was only an 80 HP motor, not even as powerful as the original Miata 4 cylinder. So mid stream...'while you're in there'...we decided to adapt a Nissan Leaf drivetrain. We found a wrecked 2018 Leaf. This is important. The 2017 and earlier motor is 107 HP and 187 ft-lbs of torque. The 2018 is 147 HP and 236 ft-lbs of torque. Depending on the final weight of the car...it's supposed to be around 1300 lbs. if you use the Miata components...it could be a 8.5 lb per HP car. But I think the torque is more significant. The original Miata is spec'd at 100 ft-lbs, this would be more than double that. We plan to autocross the car and all that torque should be available from very low rpm, perfect for a lot of very low speed corners. Also would very much like to keep the traction control working. Could be a killer autocross car if we do it right.

One of the first things that popped into my mind was that the “fit” of kits today would be far superior to yesterday’s due to computer aided design and manufacturing. This alone would make a project from a 2021 company much easier to finish for a less skilled owner/builder.
@FakeSchrodingersCat
@FakeSchrodingersCat Жыл бұрын
It depends on how far back you go, a lot of the original kits were very simple just because of how basic the cars were compared to now. I mean if you are starting with a 1960s VW beetle it is not exactly a complex machine no matter what you do to it.
@Charlesb88
@Charlesb88 Жыл бұрын
A lot of the early fiberglass kit cars of the seventies where fairly easy to assembled due to the more complex,is tic design of cars back then. The fit and finish might be a little rough as these cars were never designed to have every part fit perfectly, just good enough to work and not look to horrendous. Nowadays you can have have computer aided design and manufacturing techniques that would help the overall fit and finish of external parts so it looks less less handmade the older kit cars but mechanically the older kit cars where easier to assemble though modern kit cars have some parts the are partially pre-assembled.

i went to the factory in detroit for the slc and got a tour around the place by the owner. the basic kit was $48k plus whatever power plant you pick out. many carbon fibre options and engines will fit for the kit. the kit can get up there in price when you add carbon fibre, forged wheels and transmissions. the cost for them to put the car together was around 30k depending on what options you decided on. in total the car could cost over 100k easily for them to build it and 80k for you to build it. the car is incredible.

About 20 years ago there was a lot going on around the Locost. The plans are in a book, and the end result was something that looked somewhat like a Lotus Seven, depending on the skills (and artistic taste) of the person who built it. I built mine as close to a Caterham as I could, even using Caterham parts where nothing else would work. It was a fun build; figuring out how to make things work, finding the parts, and learning how to do new things. It took two years and $10k, but it was the best and most memorable thing I ever did with my pants on.

The Dove Racing TR1ke is one of my favorites. It uses a complete Yamaha engine and transmission, so drivetrain work is minimized, and you get some great 10,000 rpm screaming. It weighs like 800-900 lbs complete, so the power to weight ratio is pretty good. And since many states view trikes as motorcycles, registration should be fairly easy

There is something that most people don't know about the rear engined, air-cooled VW Beetle. You can mount the engine ahead of the transaxel and still get 4 forward gears. The way this is done is that the sun gear that is driven by the input pinion gear can be switched to the other side of the differential. This way you can have a mid-engine layout in any car you might build. This is the same layout used by many of the exotic cars.

I put money down for one of the first Factory 5 818s, then had to give up my spot due to relocation, and health issues. Now, many years later, I am putting a 72 ALFA Romeo spider back on the road with serious weight savings in all corners, and some aluminum panels. I’m sourcing parts from several different companies, and building many on my own. It is amazing how easy it is to drop weight on a 50 year old vehicle, however, it takes a lot of studying, and thought. When I’m finished I will have a fast, and very agile mountain road carver.

this is why I love older cars and just know I am 61 and have been pulling them apart since I was 10 but now day's you have thing's at your disposal I could never dream of so way easier long as you have a place to store and build take your time pick the car after the tools and have fun do not hurry and it will get done faster than you think, I restored Mopar's like them because they are not quirky the parts because a lot of them fit across platforms and a normal toolbox will suffice if you follow the bag and tag rule take digital picks and have a plan you can do it in six months and most of the great parts are bolt-on with very little work or you can just restore it as a faster version of its older self
