Today on Past Gas-- what’s the story behind the “Green Book”? For black Americans, traveling by car has historically been an entirely different experience with its own set of challenges and dangers. How did African American trailblazers create their own car culture, compete with Henry Ford, and use cars to tear down barriers?

In order to humanize the subject, 'enslaved person' is the best term to use when discussing people born into or otherwise living in slavery. 100% amazing podcast. I just learned this, but it really does bring the focus to the humanity of the victim as well as the gravity of their subjugation.

Remember how only maybe 15 or 20 years ago,black NFL quarterbacks were a nearly nonexistent novelty? There was maybe one in the whole league, if any, the entire first half of my life (born in 1985). It was years into the 2000s before black quarterbacks would be considered normal. Just a thought, the part at the end of the podcast reminded me of. Specifically the years Willie T. Ribbs had his firsts in F1 and Indycar.

I'm sure some folks are going to shout at y'all, telling you to stay in your lane. To just talk about car stuff, and drop the commentary on society and politics. I completely disagree with that. When issues, such as racism, are so pervasive in a society, they're going to become part of countless storylines, across all aspects of humanity. In my opinion, you're right in the sweet spot where you have a great variety in subject matter. Sometimes it's light or funny, and sometimes it's sad or dark. Life is comprised of a wide spectrum of things, and any honest history of human life will contain representations of all of it. Just because it sucks doesn't mean it didn't happen. Ignoring mistakes and evil actions of those that came before us is no way to learn or improve. Keep on telling stories the way you do, guys. You're doing great!
@jawknee21

I gotta tell ya, having been involved in the racing scene in the mid south, I have found that one of the most inclusive places has always been the race track. No one cares what color you are, where you are from, or how you grew up. If you work hard, have talent, and have a true love of cars and the sport, everyone is the same. The starting line, the finish line and a mutual appreciation for the craft is all that matters. What do we take from this? cars are the great equalizer. Maybe that will rub off on the rest of the world...

That said, on the main channel we're eating cereal in a car like an Always Sunny episode.
