I really like your videos, very informative. I also repair small engines. I’ve got a customer that has a riding mower that runs good for 30-45 minutes then dies. What do you think could be the issue?

I have had one of these for probably 10 years. I just used it 2 days ago. In the U.S., we usually just call it metric and American threads. On the head of the 1/4" bolt, the 3 hash lines designates that it is a grade 5 hardness. 5 lines is a grade 8 , or in other words, a very strong bolt. No lines is a grade 2, or sometimes called a butter bolt, as they are so soft, they twist off and break easily. Thanks Donny

I've seen equipment with mixed fasteners. SAE and Metric. Sometimes it makes you want to pull your hair out. Well, if you have any hair. The company I previously worked for was selling equipment globally. The stateside equivalent had SAE fasteners. The company switched to all metric. That would be a great tool for the shop.

I bought the same tool about 5 years ago at a yard sale for 3 dollars .It was in a tool box from a retired mechanic and nobody knew how old it was ad its been very handy for me .

I could have used this about two weeks ago - it would have saved me a stop during a day of shopping, etc.! I had to replace a grease fitting and I couldn't tell what the thread size was (even used the thread gauge from my tap and die set), so I had to go to the local Home Depot to find out what size it was. I will definitely have to look into buying a set.

In the USA it often depends on where the item was made, if it is standard or metric. I see both here.

I recently got one of these, and then applied some CLEAR COAT over the Specs to help prevent any wear. It also made the Specs a little easire to read. Thanks

I bought one a few years ago to sort my screw and bolt collection and sorted into bin boxes. Took care of digging in my junk pile of hardware when I need a bolt or nut. Helps me reduce the amount of hardware store runs in the middle of a project.

thanks . even using my thread pitch gauges , some sizes can be hard to determine if sae or metric . this tool would eliminate any guessing .

Nice tool. Just a note on the wierdness of the Imperial or "standard" threads: below 1/4" we get into the numbered sizes. For example #8-32 is 0.164" diameter and has 32 threads per inch. Confusingly, there is a #14-20 with a diameter of 0.242", which is easily mixed up with 1/4"-20 with a diameter of 0.250". The #14-20 is obsolete, but you'll run into it on old Stanley planes.

I’ve had one for several years and one day I took it to my ace hardware store to identify a hole so I could buy a tap to chase a thread and the employee was impressed with it so he ordered one for himself.

I need one of those. I would put a spare nut and bolt into each to have a quick way to find them if I need one. You could also use those to check your other threads. Thanks!!

That's a great tool. I agree with those that think it could be better if they could easily be removed for checking blind holes. But it looks like it could be better than a set of calipers and thread pitch gauges. I have used a known nut or capscrew to help figure it out...lol. I'm pretty sure my wife would figure it out if I told her I bought it for her birthday as a necklace...lol. Right up there with the guy that bought his wife a new bass boat for Christmas...😉. #10-32 and M5 are almost interchangable. For metric the M8-1.25, the 1.25 is the 'lead" (leed) peak to peak distance of the thread. For standard, the -24 is the number of the threads per inch and is alsi considered the lead (leed). Good points to know about screws and threads The 12.9 or 10.9 or 8.8 is the property class of the bolt, 12.9 is 12.9MPa, proof load. The higher the number the stronger the bolt.

This matters so much. I'm 73 and know a "gemmy" tool even though I'm not in the shop so much.!!😮 saw something like it at Lowes hardware about matching nuts and bolts. But couldn't buy it at the time. This is a lifetime stocking stuffer!!!!❤

This style is nice for checking male and female threads on a piece of equipment (where you don't have the nut/bolt loose in your hand). But for measuring loose nuts and bolts I prefer the Stainlesstown Nut Bolt Thread Gauge for 1/3 the price. It measures bolt and screw lengths up to 7-inches, diameters from #4 to 1-inch and 3 to 22mm, and 19 different thread pitches. Only costing $10 I keep one in all my tool boxes. I find both styles much faster and easier than a thread pitch gauge.

I bought the full separate Imperial and metric sets (no skipped sizes), then cut the cables and stored them in small Pelican boxes. Best of all worlds.

I have the exact same set. I cut the wire and keep them in a container. Its easier to test holes. It a PIA to screw them in while attached that wire.

I like the cable set up . The board type of thread isolator is not mobile. In the early 70’s the states almost went full metric, yet stubborn unions and folks that don’t like changes stayed with the horrible inches measurements..

I played with one of those in the store, but I find using a thread pitch gauge faster and just as easy plus it's a lot less cumbersome and fits in your pocket.

I have a couple thread ID boards that are probably the least used tool I use next to a set of back taps, but when you need them they make life a whole lot easier! So what other shop tools do you have that mostly collect dust until called on to save the day?

I have 4 sets of them; 2 sizes of Metric (smaller and larger) and 2 sizes of Standard, to be covered for pretty much everything.

Thread checkers sure are handy at times, but I think that particular one is a bit fiddly for checking holes. There are others that aren't so clumsy to use. An alternative would be to cut the cable and put them on a magnetic strip, but you risk losing some if it ever gets dropped.

I have two larger but similar sets. I initially bought them a few years ago to sort all the nuts and bolts I had accumulated over the years. But they still come in very handy. I will say that they can be a bit cumbersome to use when you have to thread it into a hole in a piece of machinery because all the other ones are flopping around on the cable. I thought about cutting them free from the cable and making a storage box for them but I was worried I would lose some. Some guys here have commented that a hand held thread checker is what they prefer. I have both but wind up grabbing these most of the time because they are hanging right by my hardware rack.

This tool will absolutely be useful for identifying nuts and bolts singularly for their thread pitch and size . Although it can be used to identify the thread size and pitch on a threaded blind or through hole , it can be tricky as you’ve demonstrated . I’m sure that someone would be enterprising and cut one end to make these gauges removable , as you would with feeler gauges in a pinch . But of course that would mean the usual task of putting away your tools , and in order . Some would seek to use either a retreading tool to check size and thread pitch , but not everyone has those either . Many of us survive on finding a nut or bolt that fits properly and threading the bolt into a die or tap into a threaded hole to find the size if we don’t possess any other means . But I personally would see worth of having this gauge as it will be a time saver for many tasks and projects . While not a perfect solution when coming to threaded holes or even a stud threaded in , it’s still very useful as priced and worth having as a time saver .

Interestingly, there appears to be a set of two thread gages in your tap and die box, in the upper left corner. Those are usually enough for this task, though I do like the thread checker you show, it would certainly make it a lot easier to tell what bolt is what especially the female threaded engine parts.

I like this tool. I wish they engraved the measurements instead of stamping them. I have used the tool at the Hardware store but the tool is only for small nuts and bolts. I don't think it has both coarse and fine threads. The tool donboy is reviewing has more pieces and both nut and bolt. I will buy one. I would like to have this tool on hand to check if I have the nut or bolt in my loose inventory.

yes, a slick upgrade would be some sort of easy way to detach each and then reattach so not lost. Much easier to check holes/studs in machinery, vs. just checking a nut or bolt.
