I used to get those painting books all the time! I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I haven't seen them in years, though. I've seen other artists use these 'paper watercolors' and that's always what it makes me think of.

I'm thinking maybe the purpose of doing a flat wash beforehand (like Steph did) is to make the colors a little more cohesive since they all have that same color underneath.

I've still seen them around on occasion at the chain corner pharmacies. I was super impressed with one I flipped through--lots of colors! The ones I remember only let you use two or three colors per page and I think they had a total of five colors they ever used: pink, purple, blue, pale minty green, and yellow.

The color magic books Steph was talking about had little dots or dashes of color on the paper so that when you painted on them with water the color activated like maaaaaaaaagic! You were meant to paint within the lines so that each section would be the color it's supposed to be, but I had them when I was very young and even less coordinated than now, so the colors got smeared everywhere and blended into one big brown smudge. It was still fun for the bigger areas of color!

Yes, paint with magic. You can use a brush with water to paint the special paper in the book and uncover images. As it dries, the picture goes back to normal. My friend just got her daughter one of these books. It’s cool because it’s no mess.

I have those "magic paint books" at my house in Atlanta, Georgia USA right now. I bought them for my grandchildren. I have to say, I have seen other youtubers with those paper paints before, and everyone always seems to be pretty impressed with them. I might add, while watching other youtubers, some of them made mention that you only have to touch the wet brush to the paper, you do not have to rub it back and forth. You might find the colors will not come out so dark in the middle and eat away at your paper if you try just touching the brush to the paint paper.

Steph, the wet on wet technique you used was awesome, I feel like that first wash helped to unify the colors because they all had a very light but similar undertone

I just recently got 2 magic paint books! A Unicorn and Dinosaur one in the party supply section at Walmart for a dollar each. I had a blast the kids were less impressed.
