Anti-parabola propoganda, plus musing on math class, cardioids, connect the dots, envelopes of lines, even a bit of origami.
Another way to get a cardioid is to add up circles like this: www.khanacademy.org/cs/sum-of-...
Extra points to a certain Andrea whose line-enveloped Hilbert curve inspired me to finish this video.

sometimes I think I developed my deep and abiding hatred of the way maths is taught in schools completely independently and that watching these videos only primed me to think mathematically, and then I come back to rewatch them because we're covering logarithms in class and my teacher refuses to tell me how to conceptualise them so I can't actually figure out how to work with them and I realise. ah. these videos did, in fact, give me a frame to work within that let me still love mathematics while not hating myself for hating how it's taught. so thanks! for influencing me more than I can probably ever fully realise

DaffyDaffyDaffy33322 yeah... and that totally tells you how the numbers in it work, or how it works at all.
@eggynack
@eggynack 8 жыл бұрын
+Echo TheEcho Not everything in math is the underlying construction, or the numbers. Sometimes it's more like this, about the relations between various things, and what things mean on a fundamental level. I can tell you that a given parabola can be defined by the function x^2=y, and that's great. Important information to know. But what that parabola means, how it relates to an ellipse, how it fits as a conic section, hell, why we actually care about it, that really matters too. And, in some ways, it matters more. You're talking about facts and figures, but that's math on the simplest and most elementary level. Math at the highest levels is about a true state of understanding. Not only being able to graph the parabola, but also being able to prove things about the parabola, and prove things using the parabola. Knowing the what without knowing the why is as unimportant in math as it is in history. A function on its own might as well be a single date associated with a single event, something which makes you ask, "So what?" Knowing the why without knowing the what is in some ways better, but it leaves you unable to dig into the nitty gritty aspects of the math, and push forth into the beautiful parts. You need both things, and this video helps you understand the why, if not the what.

I liked that this video was so complex and intricate, it kept on connecting things that didn't seem like they connected. She kept making you interested about what she was going to say next and she also kept you mesmerized as she drew. I got confused on some of the things she was saying or if it made any sense at all. I started to wonder if she was just rambling on but she made it relate able to the topic one way or another .It inspired me to always think outside of the box and to not always look at something one way. You should look at things from different perspectives.

Probably no one's gonna see this but this video affected me so much. I was in middle school when it came out and was an avid fan of Vi hart. I had an atrocious math teacher who frustrated me to no end but her videos rekindled my enjoyment of math in general. Her way of rebelling against the school system intellectually really resonated with me. This video in particular inspired me to look at why the school system wasn't working for me, and gave me the courage to back sass my teacher. One day she was so tired of my shenanigans she yelled "DO YOU WANT TO TEACH THIS CLASS" I said yes and stood up to explain the lesson. I did a poor job of it but I am now in college to become a physics teacher so I like to think that my skills have improved. Keep on keeping on Vi

Now there is purpose to all my boring classes. To doodle. You gifted me that. Thank you 😊 I hate school. School makes my life feel pointless, and I am always bored. Every chance I get, I stay home from school. It feels like I achieve nothing by going there, and I wish I never had to go. I feel no motivation to go to school and learn things. It makes me feel sad. But now, I at least have something to do. Thank you.

I'm glad you're naking videos again, but there is so much genius packed in to your old short videos that I don't know how you can compete with yourself and still maks videos on any kind ofnrealistic time scale. This is a full disection and reconstruction of the topoc of conoc sections built into doodling in math class with such great art to illustrate your point. Honestly I don't know if you can survive on KZfaq with the current volume is king algorithm. I would try to talk to PBS Digital Studios if I were you. The host of Infinite Series just left and the new hosts are probably only temporary fill ins. You would be perfect for that job.

Thanks to this video I started doodling cardiods all the time in the margins of my papers and twelve years later I'm making my living on technical illustrations for audio-related things and turns out cardiods are quite popular over there! 😄 Which sounds like I'm only giving it value now that it's earned me money and prestige but I really enjoy it when something small that you don't expect to have any meaningful impact (doodles in the margins) shows up and it's like, OH I understand this.

5:20 and with that one line orbits make perfect sense to me now. It's not like you're throwing something and it keeps missing the ground - it's like when you throw something, it tries to orbit, but the ground gets in the way.

You mentioned here that the school system doesn't promote mathematical thinking, which is decidedly true. Thankfully I found this series 9 years ago and I turned completely around on math, from being fairly bad at it in middle school to working towards a minor in mathematics in college. Genuinely, I'm certain this series is what got me to think mathematically, to play around with ideas and connect them together rather than memorize how to calculate some things. Your silly doodles in math class were a serious life changer for me. Thank you.

Honestly KZfaq is one of the greatest mediums of expression for this reason. It's almost universal that math is hated by most beloved for few. But Vihart has manage to converge the polarized groups on the subject. Not only that she's a bit of an artistic virtuoso. Thanks KZfaq for being the platform you are for people lie Vi

For the simple 90 deg one where you have the same amount of dots on each axis you can use the f(x)=(sqrt(n)-sqrt(x))^2 to plot the curve made up of the intersections when n goes to infty. n is the number of dots on each axis.
