One of the most scariest freaking games to this day, also don't know why they removed this theme from the BFG-Edition, i always had goosebumps when i paused the game and heared this music staring at the marsian surface in the background and hoping this nightmare is only a dream...only to un-pause the game and be ripped apart by a hell-creature...creepy stuff.

This is kinda depressing, as if Doom marine is fated and cursed to fight the demons, forever.

It’s pretty scary to play this game with EAX. Pausing while in a gunfight makes the last shot echo in the background, while this theme plays.

Your description is so accurate. It really does capture the helplessness of the game. This track would be fitting for a sci-fi horror film / series. Nonetheless always will be a great track.

Although Doom 3 wasn't part of my childhood, when I played it for the first time around a year ago it gave me unsettling, yet strangely familiar feeling to me. Especially as a not-native English speaker I decided to read ALL of the in-game emails and hear ALL of the character's audio-vlogs, during which I was frequently pausing the game in order to translate more obscure (for me) words, which naturally resulted in hearing this theme quite a lot throughout the game. The pause theme, both with the graphics, sound effects and atmosphere of the gameplay itself made me feel like it belongs to my early childhood, through I don't remember encountering it before in my life. I was born in 2003, and the game came out in 2004. Maybe I saw it once on TV or as somebody from my family was playing it, but I was too young then to even rebember it. Anyway, the game's audio-visuals reminds me of how the video games looked back then, and the game's dark atmosphere of how I seen the video games back then, as dark, eerie and enigmatic, which this theme captures perfectly.

This still one of my favorite pause menu UIs & OSTs of all time and hits even harder in The Resurrection Of Evil expansion after the events of the main story and you see the damage done to mars in the pause menu. I hope someone uploads the ROE version of this menu because it really gives off such a different and creepier vibe with the ambient track behind it in context to Doom 3's story. While I am happy to play through this game again on my Xbox Series S I was sad to see they replaced it with a normal menu, although I am glad to play the Lost Mission which I never got to play until recently.

This game has such a great dark atmosphere and tone. The redesigns of the Demons to were truly nightmarish. I still love Doom 3 to this day. As you play the game it truly makes you feel actually doomed like in the title which is the only Doom game that lives up to that end of it's name in my opinion, well and Doom 64 actually. But in the other Doom games you feel in control like a true badass and I love that feeling to but also vice versa with the "Felling that I'm Doomed approach"

Flawless. Can't even pause the game without it showering you with a sense of impending doom and fear. Scared the shit out of me as kid.

Doom 3 has its flaws but I still enjoy it. I thought it was a bold new direction to take the series in. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love Doom 2016 and I'm pumped for Doom Eternal. However, I do feel that this grim and dark style of Doom (Doom 3) is the true spirit of the game. It's scary and you're a lone marine against it all. Survival horror. It reflects the very meaning of the title of the franchise.......DOOM

I just had a revelation, the piece that plays at 0:27 is the Doom 3 marine's theme heard in the intro song for the game, which is heard in that song at 1:21, so awesome :)

They really took it out of bfg edition? Damn! I love this music... Whenever the game got too scary for me I'd take a break and just listen to this ominous but relaxing music until I was ready to tread deeper into the horrors... Thank you for posting up a longer version of it. The Gamerip version I had was way to short.

It is melancholic for good reason. Doom 3 is a horror game that is supposed to induce feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

They should never have taken this out of the game in the BFG edition. It really added to the atmosphere of the original game.

At the end of Doom 2016’s Hellwalker, you can hear the 5 notes referencing this music.

The theme is an allegory. How far rich-men and the corporations went to? Literally to hell. At the cost of innocent people too as always. One very little light of hope however, is that if hell exists, then god exists too. The marine in-game hears the soul-cube ghosts trying to help him. Makes you think.

This track and the one when the ship arrives at the start of the game , I believe its called "intro" are amazing :)

I used to play Doom 3 in my room alone with the headsets on. The jumpscares and sudden outbreak of alot of monsters make me sweat, so for a lil break, I used to pause the game and listen to this music so this gives me chills and shivers even my hands get cold in a summer!

Got the urge to play Doom 3 again after haven't played in over 10 years so bought the BFG version off steam and was really disappointed that this track wasn't added to the pause menu. I remember paying this in the dark at night and the game was scary enough on it's own but something about taking a break in the middle of the night it was like the creepy nightmare wouldn't give you any peace away from it!

If doom 3 ever gets a proper remake this soundtrack should be used for it's pause menu.

So my father brought this game 2004 i a year after i was just born, years later when i grew up i had a go playing it pausing the game and hearing this creeped me out every time same with dad

As a kid growing up, I've played and beaten Doom 3 on "Recruit" mode (or on Easy) and that was it, but that was back then. When I got my biological father's PC soon after his passing, (God rest his soul) somewhere along the way I decided to play Doom 3 again... ...only this time, I've played and beaten it on "Veteran" mode (or on Hard). True story. But imagine me playing Doom 3 yet AGAIN... but this time, on "Nightmare" mode (or on Very Hard). To be honest with myself, I dread going up against "Nightmare", although I did get some insight on what that difficulty had in store for me... ...whenever I played the OG XBOX Version of Doom 3 that is. To me, it's more of a learning curve if nothing else. On a more personal note, I would like to go and give Doom 3 on "Nightmare" mode a spin someday whenever I have some free time. Maybe, who knows? It could be sooner than even I would expect. 🙂 Would anyone else agree on it? Let me know.

I love Doom 3 music, but i think there's way too little of it. At the top of my head i can only think of three real tracks: The main theme, arrival on Mars and this. The tracks even get reused multiple times troughout the game, wich makes them just a bit repetitive. Everything else is basically just ambient sounds.

Another sad song would be the from the intermission/Map 31 in TNT Evilution. There was a time when not every song in Doom was thrash metal or rock or whatever. Some were creepy like E1M8 (and while this isn't official, Jade Empire from the MIDI pack for Plutonia Experiment was anything but rock), and the entirety of Doom Playstation and 64 were dark ambient. What did Doom 2016 and Eternal? Scratch all of that and replace it with songs that are either djent or electronic garbage.

the BFG edition still cant compare to the original. they removed this classic. the BFG edition has me spawning floating boxes instead of cacodemons like what the hell, its so buggy lmao. plus you can't even mod the BFG version so its basically useless.
