This could be totally wrong but what I think happened is that after the events of Doom 2, Doomguy was teleported to Argent D'Nur and asked by the beings there to lead the night sentinels, he accepts and is given powers to compliment his incredible display of skill in defeating hell twice as a mortal without supernatural powers. At some point he has a son, either from earth or while he lead the night sentinels, he dies (I'm guessing the demons killed him secretly) and Doomguy makes a deal with the demons to resurrect his son in exchange that he betrays people he guards. They die or become corrupted and eventually he wants his son restored, they bring him back as the icon of sin, then Doomguy proceeds to go on a supernaturally powered rampage through all the hell dimensions that he can get into. Eventually his sword and armor get broken or destroyed and during this time the demons send the titan to kill Doomguy. Bare-ass naked he kills the titan, is named the Doomslayer and the demons proceed to develop a trap to contain Doomslayer. Before he is imprisoned a demon only known as the wretch bestows him with his regenerative armor. Eventually a temple/mountain is dropped on him and is magically sealed in that coffin. X amount of years later he is released, spends less than 2 days defeating hells invasion of mars and is sent back into hell. He has beefed up again after how many years of degradation inside the coffin, which is why he is so massive now compared to his appearance in Doom 2016, had some help from vega in upgrading his equipment and is now further enhanced with multiple new abilities and designs. The rest, we'll find out in Doom Eternal.

"Best" and "Glory Kill" do not ever belong in the same sentence. "Glory Kills" (or, more directly, Bethesda's moronic ideas about "dying isnt fun") are what ruined Doom... But what do i know i guess, the ratings for the game are 95% and up, so i guess Bethesda struck gold with this one, to bad for anybody who likes an actually challenging game, games aimed at adults apparently need to cater to 12 year olds with uncaring parents and no skill these days, wuu Bethesda for delivering on that?... The Doomslayer is BJ Blaskowitz III, the same Protagonist from Doom 1-3 and 64 rpg and rpg 2 and Quake Champions. Though now he is a magical Slipgate Marine like Ranger and can move though Dimensions and time at will "Checkpoints lol". All ID software games are in a shared universe thanks so Wolfenstein and Quake. Archvilles are one of the most difficult enemies in DOOM due to their autolock on you and high health. it's the joke that when you see an Archville prepare to hide in cover when it locks on to you before shooting (this is worse in slaughtermaps aka maps with more demon spawn mostly in one room)

Max Willson Other than Doom guy looking like Samus and this is in first person, two entirely different games. Metroid Prime is about puzzle solving and exploration. This is a hardcore shooter. One is not better than the other. You play them for different reasons.

There are less puzzles in Doom but you do have to find keys and new weapons. This game looks like it's adding suit expansions to explore new areas.

The boost really does make it feel more like Metroid Prime than even 2016's Doom felt like, which definitely felt akin to Metroid Prime's combat without lock-on. Obviously the mission and map designs were worlds apart but the core idea of an immersive first-person shooter with aggressive combat focused around clever and fast use of weapons? I'm all in.

Speaking of metroid prime and doom, the music of the trilogy works well with doom 2016. Play any of the final boss themes of the trilogy to the final boss of doom. Tell me what you think.

Chet B that is my only real complaint with the last doom game. I'd prefer if the figures were more realistic and nastier looking compared to the slightly cartoonish look they went with. The imps in particular look ridiculous to me. Still though, excellent game.

Doom 2016’s final game was visually improved when compared to its demo so maybe this too will get that treatment

The designs are taken into more cartoonish territory. I think they want to reflect the shift towards Doom II from the first Doom - more monsters, more guns, more levels, more colors, more over-the-top and gaudy stuff, more in-jokes, less grimdark, slightly less consistency.

Andrew it looks more cartoon like, and i agree it does look a little off. I'm kinda sad that they just remodeled some of the older models from the originals instead of going with more original designs like doom 2016.
