Doom Patrol & Disability Part 4: Rita Farr, Underestimating Yourself with Chronic Illness

I really like Doom Patrol and I have a variety of disabilities, so I thought I'd make a video essay about how the Doom Patrol member's arcs mirror many disabled people's!
Today we investigate Rita Farr, the frustration of not being able to function, and the difficulty of figuring out your own limits.
I've broken this down into 5 parts, and I'll post each episode in the days leading up to the finale :)

To be fair to her teammates, they don't know why she's hogging the bathroom. They don't know that it has anything to do with her disability. They think she's putting on her makeup or something. I can't blame Rita for not wanting to tell them, but if she had, I think most of them would be more understanding. I think Cliff would tell her it's okay, that she'll get control in a moment, Larry would offer to stay behind and take care of her, and Vic would tell her to pull herself together--which would make Jane tell him to shut the fuck up.

After Therapy Patrol (I think you should review this episode too, the entire run is amazing) I see Rita as victim of child abuse

I related to Rita as well because I suffer from Fibromyalgia. As a man it's so much worse because we've been taught by society to be the able bodied always available always keeping everyone safe and doing all of the todo lists being the first to stay behind during a crisis while the women and children get to leave. It's terrible to have to deal with so many little problems that combine to become a huge monster that no one can vanquish!

OMG I love your video. I felt sympathy for Rita the more we got to know her character. I have physical and mental disabilities too. I feel her apprehensive nature of not wanting to solely be labeled as disabled. I try to make things better for my coworkers who have it worse.

I’d love a follow up since the series ended. I’m still feeling the feels that it is over. Especially with a video that may look into Niles, a predatory personality for the group, Dorothy spinner, or Madaam Rouge’s role in the Ant Farm.

What I enjoy most from Doom Patrol is the harsh but genuine family Dynamics ,more realistic then aunt may,they aren't always cuddly and comforting yet they clearly do care somewhat

That mood. The combination of feeling like an inconvenience, determined to do more but also trying to respect your limits. All while trying to ignore the ableds.

hey! just wanted to drop in to say that ur comedic timing is impeccable and ive enjoyed this series throughly! if theres one little complaint i could make is that when you do sneak previews the backing music is a bit too loud, it works as an outro but not when ur talking, its a bit hard to understand. anyways much love :)
