Oakland Mall in Michigan isn't perfect by any means, but it is hanging in there. As time progresses, the current owner shares a plan to re-orient the mall for a different experience.

This was one of my childhood malls. The Hudsons (now Macy's) restaurant overlooked the mall from the second floor. Pretty darn cool to me as a kid. Nice mall. 12 oaks was generally regarded as a better mall by my family at the time but the Sears at this mall was great!

This mall was my entire childhood. So many memories there. First arcade I saw was there. My dad’s 40th birthday, we ate at the York Steakhouse which is now the food court. Later, it was a Burger King. The hippo in front of Hudson’s (now in front of the Detroit Zoo). Sanders and my dad buying me a sundae. The ice cream store where we first saw waffle cones (and smelled them). There was a pet store and a barber shop down there too. Harmony House where that FYE is now was always a destination. The movie theatre down by the JC Penney wing. My mom worked at JC Penney salon while I was in H.S. Kerby’s Coney Island. Olga’s Kitchen, was always packed (where I got my first job hostessing) and Sears where I bought my first treadmill after college. Oh, and I was also in my high school marching band which led Santa from the JC Penney wing to the center stage (which was a stage built over the fountain). My first puppet show where they had an event for small kids when I was maybe four. My first shopping day with my friend in middle school without my parents. We spent between 6-8 hours at the mall (all day) just going from store to store (not sure if we saw a movie or not). I saw many, many movies there: Return of the Jedi (where my dad and I spent an entire day in line waiting to get tickets); E.T.; Thelma and Louise; Superman; Saturday Night Live; Stayin’ Alive; A View to a Kill; Sleeping Beauty; Snow White; The Untouchables and many others I probably forgot.

I like the look of this mall. The ceilings have some great designs. I hope the next renovations don't screw up a good thing.

This mall is not bad. The inside looks like a few malls combined. I like that. The fountain is ok and I really love all those butterflies hanging. They are so pretty and colourful.😊💜💙💚⛲🦋🦋

I live near this mall and its alright, but its nothing compared to Somerset, Great Lakes Crossing and even 12 Oaks Mall. Just a boring old 90s Mall stuck in the 90s. I do appreciate that the mall added At Home and Hobby Lobby where Sears was, it really needed something in that old space.

Awesome video incase you’re interested I went to the Boise Town Center mall In Idaho. 12/7/23, we went about noon There was hardly shoppers. Only a couple of stores were permanently closed. They have JCPenney Macy’s Kohl’s & Dillard’s. The food court only a couple of restaurants. Two of them were closed permanently. Lots of other stores. The mall was clean & well maintained. Great mall

Christiana Mall in Delaware was also a bit of a frankenmall- the 90's addition looked very different from the og 1978 mall. However the 2000-10's renovations updated the 78 part of the mall so it is no longer jarring.

Doomstradamus you are correct, this was a Taubman mall. Also from what I read there is apparently a plaque in the Macy's store that was originally in the Hudson's in the defunct Northland Mall. (aka one of the first enclosed malls in the US) AlsoI LOVE A&W. The cheese curds are worth it lol.

There are stores here I haven’t seen in a long time like Things Remembered, Lane Bryant, Orange Julius. It looks like pretty filled mall but the decor is pretty bland to me and looks like every other modern mall. There’s no character.

I like A&W. My top three favourite things that they offer are these. The beyond meat burger, the sweet potato fries with the spicy mayo and of course their iconic root beer. I tried the meatless burger a few times and it was good, but the root beer and the sweet potato fries with the sauce are on another level IMO. They're A&W's two items that I never get bored of. They are so delicious.🧡💛🍔🍟🍺🍺😊

This was never a Taubman property, and has never been more than a well-maintained, albeit slightly dangerous, second-tier destination in SE Michigan even in its glory days. Homart, once a Sears affiliate and a developer occasionally utilized on some Taubman properties, did consult and perform some of the renovation work circa 1980 and 1985-1986. The mall had a [long defunct] Wrigley's supermarket as one of the 'anchors' prior to its first renovation, which I don't recall mentioned in your narrative.

Your memory is correct. Prior to the two level extension & JCPenney addition in the late 70s, the north corridor dead-ended with a Wrigley market. However, I would disagree in the assessment that Oakland has "always been a second-tier destination." There was a brief halcyon period (circa 1968-1976) when it was the premier shopping center of Oakland county. At that point in time, Lakeside & 12 Oaks had not opened yet and Somerset was a small, somewhat experimental collection of NYC-centric stores (Bonwit-Teller, Saks 5th Ave, Schrafft's, etc). Somerset had a slow start, but did take off later (particularly post-expansion). In general, metro Detroit has historically been a blue-collar & somewhat parochial area, and few residents had familiarity or interest in the original offerings at Somerset. It wasn't until the addition of familiar local names like JL Hudson that created a hybrid center. That, in turn, was a driving factor in its eclipse of Oakland as a destination.

I remember when it wasn’t dangerous. It was upscale and affluent. Once Somerset Mall (Collection) was built about three miles away, that’s when people stopped going to Oakland. It couldn’t compete.

Not the best mall in Metro Detroit, def not same caliber as nearby Somerset, but never felt this place was even slightly dangerous, even now. I live not that far away and have been going here since I was a teen in the 80s. Eastland Mall (now defunct?) was the “dangerous” mall to me.
