Great video. Cumberland's in a great position to survive for years to come due to the Braves having their stadium near. It certainly helps it out for sure. The old Davison's/Macy's was pure 70s inside I recall. Had not been for the massive renovation it got, I am unsure the mall would have survived. It has good ownership and they are keeping up. Also people have nostalgia for this 50 year old mall. Long live Cumberland!

The first mall was awesome. I didn't know Atlanta still had something like that anymore. The second mall is decent enough, the Round 1 brings it up a few notches in my book.

I agree with you 100%. The Galleria Specialty Shops was the most beautiful mall I've ever seen! Those floors were amazing. It's too bad they didn't have the foresight to get some anchor stores in there. It's a shame to see such a great place just sit empty with the exception of a handful of stores.

The problem with the Cumberland mall is its terribly congested location. It’s too far away from the suburbs and it’s a pain in the arse to get to. Smart developers put malls as close to the burbs as possible in a location that’s easy to get to. That I-285/I-75 intersection is HORRIBLE!

Haven't been there in years! Across from the movie theater, was an arcade called 2001. Sick entrance that made it feel like you're entering a space ship, sliding automatic doors once inside to a blacklight washed arcade. Silver Spoon was a restaurant next to it, great shakes. 😊

I saw both of these when I visited Atlanta! I picked up some running shorts from the DSG. I also got to see Northlake, Perimeter, and Gwinnett Place malls (I could only see GP from inside Mega Mart, but it was still cool to see it in person!

I grew up nearby, and I remember when the Galleria opened. The Waverly Hotel hosted the most insane Sunday brunch for just under $30 per person which, back in the mid-80's, was REALLY expensive, but they served all kinds of things like alligator, etc. I believe I remember seeing "Trick or Treat" and "Back to School" in the movie theater there around 1986. Directly across from the movie theater was an arcade that was off the rails cool. It was the first place I ever saw the video game Dragon's Lair which cost TWO quarters to play which was just unheard of at the time. The only thing I ever bought at the Galleria Shops in 1986 or so was a pair of Converse high tops. The Galleria definitely catered to a more upscale crowd (think Phipps Plaza) and the Waverly hotel guests. If you needed to actually buy stuff, you went to Cumberland Mall across 41 ("the four lane" us locals called it).

I love the look of the Galleria mall..wish it could be revived.

Hard to believe it was 83. That main floor is screaming 78 or 79 garden architecture with it's round globe light posts and ficus tree planters.

Galleria always looked empty from the time it was new in 1983 until I moved out of town in 1998. My last job in Atlanta was in an office building next to the Galleria. You mentioned that the mall was developed by Carter Crow. The property was managed by Trammell Crow as in Harlan Crow's father's company. Harlan Crow entertains Supreme Court Justice Thomas.

I went to Atl 2 weeks ago and checked out Cumberland Mall after the Braves game, whose stadium is a mile away from these malls, and it was cool. I ate at the Thai place in the food court, spent time at Round 1, worked out at the PF, and took some pics. Mall looked alright and didn't know the outdoor area or the GSP until after I got home. I was also there on a Sunday evening so time was not on my side. Excellent video as always DG.

Cumberland was the mall my family went to the most in the 80s-90s. We lived in Douglasville before Arbor Place opened in 99 and this was the closest one. Haven't been there in years, looks almost unrecognizable now.

Nice video I remember going to on if them malls back in 2008 in September second week. In Atlanta think Georgia mall it had imax in it remember watching dark Knight was my first I max experience this video reminds me of good times thank you for posting this up.

I worked at Cumberland into my 30s and in the original Cumberland design, there was a fountain inside in the atrium until the first round of renovations. At the galleria, you should have seen it when it had great restaurants and specialty stops in its early days. I could have done without the Atlanta bashing, however.

I love the Galleria Specialty Shops. I love all those floor tiles. They are so pretty. I don't like the Cumberland Mall. It's way too bland and boring for me. With that being said, I love the Cumberland Mall's fountain. It is so cute.😊⛲💖

Doomie, why didn't you walk the lifestyle center portion of Cumberland Mall? I was really looking forward to that. The Galleria Specialty Mall's center court area's ceiling bears a striking resemblance to Governor's Square Mall in Tallahassee, Florida. The mall looks like it was made to be classy and a haven for high-end retail. Sad to see it virtually empty. Perhaps they should try to fill it with local mom n pop startups? The restaurant at 22:26 looks like a former Garfield's. While Town Center at Cobb is still holding its own, it's amazing that the mall that it was destined to replace is actually doing better than it. Cumberland has the Apple store, Michael Kors, MAC, and The Cheesecake Factory, while Town Center does not. Cumberland also has the only Atlanta-area location of Gilly Hicks since they made a comeback. I believe Lovisa also debuted in Georgia at this mall. Even opening here before Mall of Georgia. It seems that the Atlanta Metro area deems Cumberland to be sort of a secondary destination mall after Mall of Georgia when it comes to mid-market retailers entering the Atlanta market. Its story of survival is awe-inspiring. Not only did it survive, but it is now one of the strongest malls in metro Atlanta, not to mention one of the handful to actually still be owned by a strong mall operator (in this case Brookfield Properties).

Cumberland reminds me a lot of the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas, very similar vibes and cosmetic design.

Cobb Native, Galleria was known for Upper Crust Pizza a stuffed pizza restaurant sort of Chicago style. The other was 2001, a 2 level arcade. The arcade was amazing in a Tron inspired way. An awesome night for a kid. I beleive Winfields was upscale dining in the area and part of the Pleasant Peasant group of restaurants. I can't find pics. Wish I could. It was to be what Phips Plaza was to Lenox Square but never really took off. However for a brief time it had some really amazing promise. Jocks and Jill's sports bar was th elaste thing I remember going to there 15 or so years ago. Cumberland's original style was much like the Jasper Mall on steroids. Plants and brick, 70s modern benches etc. Chick-fil-a was not in the food court. You could get your sandwich an eat on the steps next to a fountain, kind of hidden behind the big brick planters. Ole Marietta O.M. and I grew up in Cobb facebook groups have posted pictures. It has more lives than a cat. The Vinings area growing and taking over the Smyrna area helped the mall and then possibly the Braves. Vinings was regentrification of the area, thanks to Atlanta's growth people will move back into to areas to reduce commute times. Town Center lingers on, and was my high school mall. Town Center never had the atmosphere of the original version of Cumberland. Granted as you mentioned Cumberland quickly remodeled which even at the time. I wasn't a fan of. However, Town Center was central to the area with many young people going to the Barrett Pkwy area and thus where the more Mall rat, high school culture was.

I’m with you, Doomie, Atlanta is just too overcrowded. That’s my only gripe. Aside from that the first mall looks great! Looks as if it could outside. It definitely has the Mom an Pop store feel to it. The second mall is more modern an looks to have life in it. Has all the stores commonly found in Malls. Me personally I think it’s sad to see a abandoned mall. All that architect just sitting there. I would think they’d demolish and rebuild something else. It's kinda funny that a mall in Minnesota, in this case, Southdale Center, has Galleria mall across the street. In this case, though, this Galleria is probably the most upscale mall in the Twin Cities Metro.

Cumberland has always had a dangerous reputation, at least to people in Cobb County. Recent incidents show me nothing has changed 30 years later. We always went to Perimeter or North Point instead.

The upper floor of the Galleria Specialty Shops reminded me of a Hotel, especially with the tables at 7:50 with all that stuff. Made it look even more like that.

One thing you have to remember is… A lot of times, they build these malls with things like conventions, events, etc. in mind; the thinking is “we get conventions, and contract all this other business“ etc. They can be open 12 months out of the year, sit nearly idle 9 to 10 of those months, and make enough or churn enough profit during convention center that they still come out way ahead for the year. At least that’s what they try for in a lot of these cases.

I understand about the white and gray color scheme, but I’ve seen a lot worse white purgatory malls than this. It does have a little amber hues and the ceiling architecture is nice. I don’t like the warehouse ceiling look where they overdo it with the skylights and the sun is blaring directly down on people. This mall has a nice balance of just the right amount of natural light to where it’s pleasant. Like you I’m a fan of 80s style malls like you see in the movie Valley Girls. I miss the neon. Malls built or redesigned in the 90s/early 2000s are like you say….sterile looking.
