Lets dissect the Sony A7C II and A7CR vs. the tried and tested A7IV and A7RV. Especially when scouting the used market, the choices might surprise you.
Pricing Reality Check:
Sony A7C II: $2200
Sony A7CR: $3000
Are you sacrificing too much for the sake of portability? Especially when the size difference isn't as drastic as you might think...
Key for New Full-Frame Enthusiasts:
The Sony A7C Mark I could be the unsung hero for photography-focused fusers. You can snag one used for as low as $1000!
Notable Differences:
Storage: A7CII and Sony A7RV models have 1 SD card slot vs. A7IV/A7RV's two CF Express compatible slots.
Shutter Speed: Max 1/4000 on A7C models vs. 1/8000 on A7IV/A7RV.
Ergonomics: Shallower grip on A7C vs. deeper, longer grip on A7IV/A7RV.
Viewfinder: Smaller, lower-res EVF on A7C vs. larger, higher-res EVF on A7IV/A7RV.
Connectivity: Micro HDMI on A7C vs. full-size HDMI on A7IV/A7RV.
Performance: A7C's limited thermal capacity vs. A7IV/A7RV's longer recording time.
Controls: Missing joystick and fewer custom buttons on A7C.
...and the list continues. Yet, with these points, a used A7IV or A7RV could offer better value and features for the same price tag.
Why Go New?
If a compact body is your top priority, the Sony A7C II and its predecessor, the A7C Mark I, shine bright-especially when the latter is almost half the price of the former.
Final Thoughts: We urge you to think, compare, and choose wisely. Not every new release is a step up for everyone. Especially with the Sony A7CII and A7CR not bringing new features or leap innovation with these releases. Juxtapose your needs with these models and find your perfect photographic companion.

I actually bought both of these camera when they came out in the fall of 2023. Originally went back and forth but decided to build a travel kit with one of each. Like to travel with two bodies. Still also have an A7RV but sold my A7C and A7IV. Biggest challenge is finding high quality lenses that are also small but the new G 16-25/2.8 and 24-50/2.8 have now been introduced and are great for these camera families. So are the Sigma I-Series primes. The grip is ok when you need it you plan to use larger lenses but SmallRig base plates also work well. Take care.

Sigma DGDN is where is at for me. Also the small 24-40-50 f2.4-f2.8 from Sony are amazing and light.

I agree that considering the price we should have gotten a bit more with at least the A7Cr. Regarding IBIS, With the A7rV I've been able to get very sharp full 3 second handheld exposures with an unstabilized 28mm lens. So at least on that model the new IBIS is a huge leap forward and is now almost Olympus level. The stated 8 stops is not exaggerated and can be achieved with even legacy lenses.

I have the Sony A74 and I use it for both photo and video (probably 80-20%). I want to get a second body, though I am intrigued by Sony A7CR, I don't need the extra megapixels. I wanted to do a bit more video, so was debating on the A7Cii which has some neat new video features (i.e. AI, 7 stop IBIS), or going with something directly video focused, like the Sony FX30. My lenses I have now are just the Sony 20mm F1.8 G and the Sony 50mm F1.4 GM (as well as Sony 200-600mm G OSS for wildlife). I don't do 60fps so the 4K 60 crop for the A74 and A7Cii may not be an issue, though I do want to learn more about video. The crop lenses are cheaper and a good variety or choices, which is nice. I am thinking the A7Cii will be a short learning curve for the A74, where I have a lot to learn with the FX30! I think I may miss the evf as I use that right now for both photos and videos, so that may be the deciding factor. Finally, I did have the Sony A7C, and didn't have a major issue with the evf, not the best, but at least it had one. Now, I wasn't that comfortable with the grip with large lenses (specifically zooms), and this grip is "better" but is it good enough?!?!?!? I could get a small rig extension if needed, but I don't know!

How the 4k 60p in crop factor mode on the a7cII compare to 4k 60p on a FX30/a6700 when regarding low light? are they virtually the same or a FF sensor is still better even in crop mode?
@GastonShutters
@GastonShutters 11 ай бұрын
Almost no crop on the FX30 1.04X crop factor. A Full frame sensor at at 33MP better low light performance than the 26MP sensor of the FX30 or a6700

I watch a lot of your videos because you do a lot of Leica stuff. I just returned my m11 due to freezing. I’m thinking getting an a7cii or r. I have a couple Sony lenses already but want something that can rival the Leica. Are the colors the same on both sensors. I honestly don’t need 60mp. Thanks

Hey man. The freezes for me are not a big deal after latest firmware. I own a couple M11. I don’t think that there is anything out there that will match the experience of the M11 but the closest thing from Sony would be a A7CiI or A7CR (I have that one) great image, best in class AF and great for video.

No 8k and 4k 60 compromises on the a7CR means I am now waiting on the A7C1. The A7CR is Soooooo close... but I get why they had the short comings. I do think Sony made a mistake releasing the a6700 first, because a lot of us waiting on the A7C2 are completely satisfied with the A6700... If nothing changes I will get an a7R5 for that viewfinder and rear screen or a Q3 :) I like the idea of the grip, but THAT grip is ugly. I think your take on $3k camera with dual card slot doesn't have merit with this camera. Find another 60MP camera that costs $2999, that's where the value add is with the A7CR. This is NOT a pro camera but an enthusiast camera.

@GastonShutters I am going A7IV. I see one with a kitl lens for $2100. Is that a good deal? Whats your opinion on the kit lens and what second lens should I get with it?
@GastonShutters
@GastonShutters 11 ай бұрын
if you are talking about the 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 that lens is decent. A bit slow but you can capture great images with it. At 2100 that's a good deal. But if you can spare a couple of more bucks I would go with the sigma 28-70mm F2.8 Faster and you can have it preowned for under $600. take a look at these ones (due your own research on the sellers): A7IV www.ebay.com/itm/235211638483 Sigma 28-70 f2.8 www.ebay.com/itm/134735353319

What should it have cost? The A7Rv is $1400 more than the A7iv. I think Sony hit the pricing on the head for a high MP camera. As I said before, find a more capable 61MP camera for less.

If they somehow would have manage at least to put a second card slot on the A7CR, even tought that means a little increase in size, then it will worth the $3K.

@@GastonShuttersit would have been plenty of room for 2 card slot and/or a joystick if they would have increase the size a little bit. It will remain a compact product and distinguished more against the A7CII and a6700 by doing so, therefore worth the price
