The crew of Door Bumper Clear discusses Chase Elliott’s response to Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the Dale Jr. Download about not wanting to take part in the second season of Netflix’s NASCAR documentary series. The hosts say Chase doesn’t gain anything from being in the Netflix “Full Speed” show, but his participation would help the sport. Should Chase feel an obligation to participate or is it ok for him to say “no”?

Let these guys be themselves!! If he doesn't want to participate in a netflix series...who gives a shit? I couldn't imagine having the weight of the sport resting on my shoulders like it is on Chase, Dale Jr was the same way, that's ALOT of pressure that they never asked for. Sure it's a privilege to get to drive race cars for a living, but everyone still needs to realize they are still human beings and still have everyday life things, problems going on!! It shouldn't be all on Chase to bring NASCAR back to life. It is starting to gain popularity and momentum already, it will just take time, but I don't think it will ever be what it was in the late 90s and early 2000s!

Everyone interviewed on that show was pretty genuine. Not like Chase will lose fans doing the netflix show either, his fans are loyal as hell, to a fault even. But as most popular driver, the guy should try and do more to get the sport back out there, doesn't have to go full Denny Hamlin mode and have a podcast and all that but just branch out a little.

I said this on Eric Estepp's video from about 5 to 6 days ago: I'm with Chase though, distractions can hinder a driver's performance. If it doesn't make him go faster, it's not important. If Chase does not want to do something, I feel it's okay just the same as I would expect support from family and friends if there were certain avenues I wish to not go down. It's worth noting that most of us "the normal human beings" would probably not want a camera in our face at any given moment. I respect that Chase wants to do his job and not have anybody in the way. I work at a hotel, cameras are on all the time, however I don't have them in my face asking me questions. Chase keeping those humble roots, and not wanting the spotlight might very well gain him more popularity due to how grounded he is like most of us are. Relation to your audience to me is bigger than any TV camera catching some less than favorable moments. I will double down on this; I don't care how the game works. Everybody gets a choice including NASCAR's most popular driver. Netflix may be doing a great thing to grow the sport; Chase already helps the sport given the ratings when he is there and healthy. So, does he need the extra's? In my opinion hell no! Just focus on making the team, sponsors, and fans at the race track happy. Media tends to ruin even the best of people.

This is Bill Elliott in 1985. After he won Talladega he couldn't get away from the media. All Bill wanted to do was get in the car and drive fast. The media back then tried to paint a bad picture on Bill in the same way they are doing it to Chase. It isn't that they don't want to give back...Jesus...does anyone look at what Chase does yearly outside of racing? How could anyone claim he isn't giving back simply because he doesn't want to do a show??? You want to know why people think you are "hating on Chase" because if this were Kyle Larson no one would have made that statement. That is just a fact. Also, Chase has done Dale Junior Download multiple times and you would expect the guys to at least have it together to know that.

The expectations put on Chase are not fair, the same way the expectations put on Dale Jr were not fair. I’m not a Chase fan for any reason other than when I was a kid he came up and I saw someone not to much older than me which was fun to watch. He wants to race, he hates attention. Obviously it comes with it but I don’t think he wanted or expected to have to take over for his father or Jr. He wants to be in this sport but he doesn’t want to compromise who he is as a person. He got permission to live primarily in Dawsonville because that is where he is the most happy. I think this is an important discussion because he is the face of the sport, but at a point we have to realize that he is only one person and even Dale Jr will say this is a difficult position to be in, especially since Chase is more reserved and private.

Everyone saying Chase needs to do it, whether he likes it or not, are basically asking him to be something and someone he's not -- and considering how much we hammer people we perceive as fake, I find that really interesting. Would NASCAR benefit from his presence? Absolutely. But at the same time, if he doesn't want to do it, what are you really getting out of him? And if I have my timeline right, his presence on the Netflix doc would've sucked all the air out of the competition side of things, because then you'd be hovering around this guy who had been hurt a lot of the year, got suspended, and was running like crap -- all while a lot of the drivers who were featured ended up either making deep playoff runs or got all the way to the Championship 4. I think, for NASCAR's sake, they need to stop being so dependent on one driver for stuff like this. Like, the drivers who were featured in the series are the perfect guys to be shown, because you get a variety of personalities, a couple generational-talent wheelmen, the sport's current villain, the guy who won the championship, and a guy who's bridging the gap between iRacing and the real thing. That's content gold right there, and I think it does a disservice to them when we sit around going, "But what about Chase?" Everyone's screaming about personality these days, like we all need 20 Clint Bowyers running around. But let's not forget what badasses all these guys are. That's what needs to come through.

You're right about the Hendrick component. Hell, Jeff Gordon was on the DJD either last season or earlier this year, and he basically said HMS doesn't really like its drivers going outside the box too much (granted, a guy like Larson gets more leeway because he's more or less this generation's A.J. Foyt, but still).

The real question is why is the Netflix series so important? From the beginnings of Grand National Racing through Winston Cup, did nascar have to do gimmicks or tv series to bring fans in, NO! Once the reason for no is figured out, then the next question is getting back to what made Winston Cup so popular & that is the product! The manufacturers were a prominent part! The drivers were prominent to the sport! Laid back Bill Elliott to the intimidator Dale Earnhardt & everyone in between! As I said, the PRODUCT ON TRACK! If they get back to these three things, you will see tv ratings go way up & attendance truly improve! No gimmicks of “clash at the coliseum” or Netflix shows needed!

Several things Chase is not running well. He, like everyone, would not want to be featured on a show to answer why constantly. Chase also has no worries about ownership or sponsors as he sells product. Chase says he want to just go fast and focus on racing. He lives away from Charlotte so he doesn’t spend as much time in shop/simulators as some of his teammates. Also, Chase saying he only wants to do things that focus on racing. He chose to snowboard during the season. He got injured. It happens. But sometimes you should put those things off until after the season.

Chase (and the rest of the drivers) for the most part is popular inside the world of NASCAR, not outside. The general public is not going to tune into the nascar netflix series because they read that chase Elliott is gonna be in it. Chase doesn't mean much to some random person who has never watched a race before. He is doing everything his team and sponsors want him to do, he's definitely leaving the sport a little better than he found it just by being/doing exactly what he is already.

I always wonder if fans of a non-mainstream sport who want it to be more popular actually realize what that means. Do you want to pay more for tickets? Do you want more commercial breaks while watching on TV? More advertising graphics on the screen? Lada Gaga concerts at the all star race? Look at the NFL. How much of that crap is demanded by the people who actually like the sport vs the people the sport is trying to get to like it? That's what you're also inviting when you're trying to get an audience who is not naturally drawn to the sport to watch the sport.

If Chase doesn't want to do it, then he shouldn't (and if it's anything like the borderline-fiction that DTS has proven to be, it's probably a really wise decision)

Chase has been blessed with the opportunity that THOUSANDS of drivers would literally do ANYTHING for. Chase is where he is because of Bill. Is he tremendously talented??...ehhh. This new car has exposed Chase's ability to truly push a race car..and hes clearly struggling as he's admitted. The sports most popular driver not participating in the TV series is just ignorant. Him pushing the camera away for no real reason a couple years ago was just ignorant and shame on NAPA for not taking issue with any of this if they did not. He is where he is at because of his name and the fact that he isnt embracing his place in the sport shows his lack of character. Hell..I'd sure as hell like to just show up at the track and race top tier equipment but my last name isnt Elliot and my sponsors actually care about what i do to represent them. Now come on all you Elliot fan boys go ahead and roast me!...

I turned the cold shoulder to Chase when Dilner and him went to the restaurant in GA that has the siren. Dilner asked if he wanted to get a sandwich, and chase said, "Nah." with a look on his face like there was no way he'd consider eating food from there. Chase reminds me, with his attitude, like Ty. Silver spoons...

You talking about the Dawsonville Pool Room that rings the siren when he wins? Pretty sure he would eat from there and has. I believe he said it was his first job on the NBC show called Chase that they filmed when he won the Championship.

@@vincentodomscatl24 that's the place. I could be wrong about it, but man... It sure felt like he couldn't be bothered. Honestly, I hope I'm wrong. This snub feels all too familiar.

I mean as much as I hate to say it he's not running good and it's pretty obvious that in my opinion he doesn't like the new car I mean after he won that championship in the previous car he hasn't ran good and in my opinion I'm disappointed that he's not doing the Netflix thing because I would have enjoyed to watch it but he can do whatever he wants to do

Possibly Chase doesn't feel worthy right now. Once he is a two or three time champ he may loosen up.

Maybe, him not over exposing himself is part of the reason he's the most popular driver. After you whore yourself out enough, people get tired of ya. One minute your in a reality series, the next your wearing a chicken suit for a sponsor.

I think that Chase is losing a fanbase. For many fans who grew up watching NASCAR it has been a struggle linking to a driver after guys like Dale Earnhardt sr./jr, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Davey Allison, and more recently Kevin Harvick are no longer on the track. A lot of people gravitated to Chase because of his last name. From many fans point of view there is just not much to gravitate towards. He doesn't seem to connect to his fans very well.

Okay cool. But Brett, and Freddie, you can’t sit here and constantly wax lyrical that Ross Chastain, and Bubba Wallace are the next superstars of the sport. And constantly exclude Chase Elliott from that conversation. But then simultaneously say that NASCAR would be bigger if Chase was on the show. If you’re going to claim and Ross and Bubba are the next big “household” names all the time, shouldn’t your logic also dictate that they’re the ones you want on the show? And if you don’t include Chase on that conversation, then why does it matter if he’s not on the show?

If he doesn't want to do it, he doesn't want to do it. He's a professional race car driver, not a reality tv star. Are other professional athlete's being forced to do reality tv? I don't believe so. Fans already have a lot more access to drivers than any other professional sport. Drivers spend hours signing autographs and meeting fans. It's rare to see that in other sports. So just let the drivers race. NASCAR has made the race a season long soap opera anyway. We don't need to watch them on Netflix.

Whether he wants it or not, Chase Elliott is the spokesman of NASCAR and he needs to start acting like it. He's a selfish man-child acting like this. He owes NASCAR and his fans to participate in anything this huge that will draw fans in. Otherwise NASCAR dies because it didn't immediately benefit him at that moment he was asked. That's childish. You leave things better than you found it. Grow up, Chase.

Chase would put people to sleep if he was in a Netflix series. With all respect to the dude, an entire team of publicists attempting to make him interesting or his personality at all a factor would fail every time. He's about as boring as boring can get, which, if that's how he is, that's just how he is. Keep him out of the spotlight because it definitely doesn't suit him. I have no idea how he became popular in the first place.

Harvick was correct. If Dale Jr. had won a title, he never did the best finish I think was 3 place, it would have helped NASCAR. Chase and Dale Jr.'s popularity is a direct result of who their fathers were i.e. they come from their daddy's balls.
