Ross Chastain’s Hail Mary move riding the wall gained him enough positions to make the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4.
Door Bumper Clear's T.J. Majors, Freddie Kraft, Brett Griffin, and special guest Jeff Gluck, from The Athletic, explain how shocked they were to see him make the move, debate whether he prepared for it, and discuss if NASCAR should rewrite the rules to prevent it.

The issue with making a rule is this... If you go back to the Darlington Xfinity race - Larson and Creed, were in a battle for the lead, Noah was right there in 3rd. Noah ended up with the win, but they ALL scraped the wall on the last lap going for it, and it turned out to be one of the best finishes I've seen in a long time. Would they DQ them all??? Should NASCAR make a rule? Probably not. But I'll say this and it was mentioned by the guys. When the camera was on Ross when he got out of the car and took off his helmet, he looked like he was "off". After being in EMS for over 17 years and having been on hundreds of accident scenes, I've seen that look before. He was a hurtin unit! And Ross made mention of that later on. Asking "What if....?" may increase safety without reducing the racing or excitement. Your argument reminds me of the members of a city council or a group of town selectman who carelessly have a blinking yellow light installed at the crosswalk of a school on a main road after a child gets hit. You're right about not being able to forecast every plausible scenario, but if you can think it, it can happen. If any car had lost a tire or had been pushed up into the wall by another trying to pass on the last lap, Chastain never could have stopped and would have clobbered that car. In that situation, I think may who are lauding his move would not hesitate to call him reckless. I think he was anyway. A "What if....?" may prevent it.

All of us have watched the video bunches, watching it in real time I thought that a camera had malfunctioned. You all that work in this sport were surprised by this move -- as for it becoming the new Norm I will remain on the side of caution. The reason I say that is there are way too many variables in a choice like Ross made and in his case this one worked out, the next one maybe not. I will say that one of the reasons I believe he made the move was -- He has been one of the few driver's who did not get caught up in how unsafe this car is -- he stated numerous times that other driver's did not speak for him -- therefore he felt safe enough to send it. Geez what a moment all of us witnessed.

Does anyone remember the Darlington stripe??? The fastest way around Darlington was to rub your right side of the car against the guard rail. Good drivers had the stripe bad drivers stayed away from the wall.

I tried it in IRACING at a handful of tracks. TRACKS THAT IT "WORKS" AT; Works- .4 of a second faster than normal fresh tires. MARTINSVILLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, PHOENIX, BRISTOL, LA COLISEUM. I bet someone will try it if they can at Phoenix.

They will make a rule. Yep. But, part of the reason for the rule will be to preserve the most Iconic moment in American motorsports, maybe worldwide.

There will be another NASCAR movie, e.g. Days of Thunder, made from this one Iconic move. That is what we just witnessed.

Amazing how many people who work in the sport dont actually enjoy the sport. I keep hearing that this is unsafe? Really? Where is the data for that? "What if the gate came open?" Well, why aren't we worried about that when someone blows a tire and hits that gate at speed at a 30-degree angle? That impact is way more than 5G's. That wall experienced less force with Ross's move than a normal corner accident, by far. Check the video, the safer barrier didnt even displace itself. As Larry Mac said, if this is too unsafe then we better cancel Daytona & Talladega where they are 30 cars deep at 190 when they start the pile up.

That means in the case that you're talking about every time somebody's at Darlington and puts a stripe on it they got to go to the back they got to leave this alone they ain't got a leg to stand on it's just going to make it worse if they try messing with it

I feel like an element of the "make a rule" conversation I haven't seen much mention of is the damage report. Freddie touched on it with the missed joke opportuniy.. but I don't seen the wall ride being an option in any other situation than the hail mary last lap gotta get a position type play. I have yet to see any info on how buckled the car was, but I doubt it could have completed any additional laps.. My point is, I think everyone is talking about it, but it was a one in a million move.

My take on that move is it'll probably only work on a small course like Martinsville. The curve is so tight that everyone going for the inside has to slow down a considerable amount, and the course is so small that, while Chastain carried this through turns 3 and 4, there still wasn't a whole lot of time or distance that he spent going along the wall. In terms of legality, I feel like if the rules are going to change to prevent this in the name of safety, let people meddle with the sport and dilute it as much as they want, but any rule against using the wall to your strategic advantage shouldn't be enforced retroactively, and it will almost certainly end up similar to, or possibly worse than, the double yellow line/shoulder penalty shenanigans. Long story short, Ross Chastain is a mad genius masquerading as a NASCAR driver, and I live for his antics.

Rest assured the Martinsville track worker who has to paint the wall won't be sending Ross a Christmas card...Lastly, I'd like to think somewhere above Dale Earnhardt tipped a heavenly glass of wine to Ross. Another racer doing whatever it takes, shades of sitting in the window opening while wiping your windshield under caution, pass in the grass Riverside, whatever it takes...

It's not the first time it was tried successfully. It's the first time at Martinsville. They did it at darlington for years. Kurt Bush at Atlanta in the 2, had half the field lapped by halfway, at one point lapped into the top 10 after pit stops.

People used to "wall ride" on the old NASCAR racing sims and you could pass the entire field. The game added an engine slowdown of 5 seconds to counter this. I used to win at Martinsville in a league this way. I just had to time it to avoid cars. Then league rules added, "No wall riding".

I don't see it working again because everyone will be looking/waiting for it to happen again plus will the situation ever really present itself again where someone will be physically in a position to do it. Last lap your in 2nd, can you simply floor it, cut to the wall and take off? I'm not sure it would be that simple, wouldn't you need space to accelerate AND you would have to touch the wall at the perfect angle. Kudos to Ross for pulling it off, doesn't it just fit that it was him that pulled this off this year after his other adventures so far? Go get the championship dude!
