I've seen all my hero rappers for the first time in the last few years, all here in the UK - I won tickets to see BDK (for saying why I love his rhymin), then Public Enemy and then Slick Rick.. I'm now in my 40's. I never would have thought as a 15 year old Hip Hop lover that 25 years later I would at last see my favourite artists live in stage!

Lol! Same. I saw him in Camden in 2016, then Stockport(!) at the end of this August at the Moovin festival. (Lee Scratch Perry was on stage and took the mic from Kane, to announce that "pussy is the devil") But when I was reading Hip Hop Connection in 1990, I never imagined one of the greatest MCs would be so approachable, humble and entertaining 25, 30 years later.

Good video, Jay. Much appreciated.Kane had many valuable aspects to his rhyme mechanics, but for me, I have always appreciated his punchlines, wit and humor the most. 'Steppin' to this, you're not allowed/ you keep frontin' on the stage like you're rockin' the crowd/ snatchin' the microphone real proud/ but your rhymes are so booty you should write em on white cloud.' 'So before ya step to me, use your head/ and you better think about it more than Special Ed.'' "Steppin' to me thinkin' I can be touched/ not even Michael Jordan would gamble that much." To battle me, ya shouldn't even try /cuz with wings on your tongue, you still wouldn't say nothing fly.' Kane had punchlines for days -- consistently issuiing MCs PSAs that he is the wrong MC to battle.

@TheFoundation Good commentary my brother. The fact that u brought up the affiliation with Islam(the 5%) is overlooked because it forced us to read, articulate and observe a little more than other teenagers we were around. Language arts in school is also overlooked. Our generation received more instruction in the exercise of language and literature. I have 4 children from 13 to 23. I literally can see the "dumbing down" of today's youth in school. This effects the wordplay of today's rappers too. They aren't exposed to the break beats that we were exposed to; being born in the late 60's up to '72 put us at a great advantage
@TheFoundationhiphop6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, agreed on all points bro. Thanks for looking.

There's a perfect example @2:30 of the brilliance of this series. It had never occurred to me how much Kane was matching the stresses in his flow to the offbeat kick and snare of that classic displaced Cold Sweat/Kool Is Back/Funky Broadway pattern, but as soon as you said it, it gave me a total head-slap "eureka" type of moment! Genius is making the complex seem simple. Now that you point it out, Kane says so many words right on that offbeat snare - "thrilled" "dope" "ill" etc. He's always laying for that snare. Of course, even beyond that, I hadn't even heard this track or the flip side until I watched this video! They aren't even on the first Kane LP! Listening to the opening, where he's bantering with Marley Marl - it's sort of a "skit" where Marley says "all right man, here's one of my funkiest beats - let's see what you can do with it". How do you think the creative process actually went down? Obviously Kane didn't just freestyle the track, so the banter was just that - a skit - a dramatization. But do you think Marley gave him the beat and he wrote the rhyme or do you think he had developed the rhyme rapping to Kool Is Back and asked Marley to make a beat using that and then they wrote the skit later ... or _____??

Let me add one more thing here also. These are my 1 and 2 guys (Kane and LL) in no order and I bounce between them. But in '89 Kane pretty much upstaged LL on the NITRO tour. He had the unique ability of having the ladies and the dudes(in his prime). He brought a hot tub on stage and that just killed it. I remember LL would bring a red ferrari or corvette on stage (he was the lead) but it didn't have the same effect.

What era would you consider the best era of hip hop. Im a 70's baby. So for me that early 80's to mid 90's is the best. Rappers were trying to be individuals and not sound like each other. Many styles. Many different subject matters. Some made for the radio. Some made for knowledge. Some made to show skills. Today everybody wants to sound like everybody on the radio. Little creative in todays game.

wordup. Kane is like a mixture of Caz & Moe Dee if you could put em 2 together, in my opinion!

@theedub I purposely concentrated on only Kane's lyrics. I mentioned his stage show being part of his triple threat, but my intent was not to stray from his lyrical display. Agreed, Kane is an admitted student of Caz. He mentions it often. Thanks for looking.

You're on point Jay...Ultra rapped over the beat pattern of Ego Trippin just like Kane on get into it. You're on point with putting focus on Somethin Funky. Very important Debute! Also the usage of Synthetic Sub by Marley across from Ced Gee's use of it.

Good video. Kane contributed to this culture in so many ways and is (in my opinion) often overlooked. Lyrically, one of the dopest of all times and changed the way we constructed rhymes.

JayQuan, you sir are a genius! Thank you for this site. I now know that there are other people who remember the lyricism. Have you thought about covering the group dynamics and flow of X-Clan. Specifically Brother J. Some of his expressions, disses and the like are LEGENDARY.

Hyperbole, The aforementioned animation, is a component or technique employed in literature and poetry. These are some of the things that I really enjoyed about English class... (I'm sure you know this stuff Jay).... That hyperbolic style also heavily used by MC's the likes of Grand Puba Maxwell, Method Man, DAS FEX, Chip Fu... among others... HIP HOP became a part of school for me at that time... and I still carry it. (LLHH)...
