I used this for my Year 11 physics class. We estimated the frequencies of the horn before and after as 390Hz and 350Hz and calculated the speed of the car as about 66km/h using the Doppler effect formulas.

I too did this but I found his speed as around 73 miles/hour (33m/s) . Horn frequency when at rest is 355Hz. Max frequency detected was 393Hz. Minimum frequency detected was 343 Hz. Taking speed of sound as 343 m/s, the results says he was lying and driving at faster speed. The discrepancies can also be due to my view that he was not driving at constant speed but rather accelerating and retarding! Geek!

@@gohilramdevrajeshbhai5254 The 355Hz figure is for when the car is moving away, not at rest. Whether the car was accelerating or not, it couldn't change much speed from just before and just after it passes the camera and the sound changes. You can still get a good estimate of the speed from that. And it seems clear that its speed isn't changing much from the video.

Don't *EVER* cut the way of a Physics Engineer while driving, he will blast his Doppler gun at your hears!

Would that sound different if the horn was in the back of the car? In a way I know it wouldn't but it seems like it would at the same time. So....???

It would sound the same.

@@NatSciDemos so the dopler effect is from the noise getting closer and further not where the sound is necessarily happening?
