and it's here! thanks to mat1jaczyyy for the help again. can't be improved much since it's 1080p vs. 480p
(honestly i'm so lazy to learn to do it myself that i'm asking him in exchange of zetris battles lmao)
this one feels different, because we didn't have the same theme selected (galaxy vs. elegant). looking at it this way, it almost feels like dark mode vs. light mode :')
this shows precisely why stalling is a thing, and why it becomes very strategic from now then. i admit it can be pretty boring, as i tend to get impatient and counterattack very fast instead of waiting for the absolute perfect opportunity. but who knows, maybe i will stall longer in the future... it's good training.
thanks to amemiya for allowing me to use his video! (and switch to 720p please w)

You realize that your ruining the 4wide combo chain by constantly stopping, adding a couple of pieces to the wall, and then going back and doing 3 drops, and then going back and building the wall again. That's not how it works, the drops have to be consecutive or you might as well not be doing it at all. It's like trying to cook with a pressure cooker but your constantly opening it to check the food.
@Doremy
@Doremy 4 жыл бұрын
@@tennohack6704 please don't act so aggressive when you don't know what you are talking about, especially when everyone pointed it out in the comments. if you check for example at 27:19, i send 2 lines with a double, but amemiya received 12 lines; that's margin time, where damage sent is increased. there is NO point in doing it consecutively because: - it doesn't send any more lines because opponent's garbage queue is already full - it empties the resources that i have, making me more vulnerable to counters. if you check 19:56, amemiya literally started to counter because i had no resources left, saying it himself. i'm just keeping as much resources as possible while sending occasional damage, that's the way to go. i think i should know that given how much i play this game, right? :)

I've been having a bad couple of days and i guess i came on way too strongly. Your right as I (obviously) do have less experience in pvp, (i usually stick to practice as i prefer to just play endless at level one and go at my own speed) and if i was more chill about it i probably would have just asked why you did that, as apposed to asserting that it was incorrect. I like the break up strategy but I think extra garbage past the limit should shorten the timer for the garbage in progress. Doremy sent a lot of lines that contributed no advantage which seems wrong from a competitive standpoint. but then again there are probably ~100 players in the world who would ever find themselves in this situation so the dev team probably doesn't care.

@@j03man44 Extra garbage past the limit shortening the timer wouldn't help. The garbage timer continually gets shorter and shorter as the game progresses. The strat that amemiya is using is just stalling each drop so that the garbage doesn't spawn for as long as possible, because garbage only spawns once the timer has run down all the way and you make a drop that doesn't clear a line. He's trying to clear a single line with each drop so that the garbage doesn't spawn and he wants to do it slowly so that doremy wastes all his material comboing and sending garbage that won't make a difference.

As a non-Tetris player, this is really weird. It seems intuitively that stalling should make you just get murdered super hard as soon as you let any piece settle, since an opponent who doesn't stall has been racking up numbers on you the whole time you were chilling out. Is there some kind of gate to impending damage, or a diminishing-returns mechanic, or something? What lets a stalling player survive?

only 12 lines of garbage can be queued to be dumped into an opponent's play area. any excess garbage lines are just fed to a void at that point. each instance of garbage sent has a small delay before it can be added to their board. Once the delay has expired, the next piece they place that fails to clear a line is when the glowing section is added.
@fafdsfr
@fafdsfr 4 жыл бұрын
Additionally, and this is a huge piece of why it works, queued garbage will not enter your screen following a piece drop where you cleared a line. You need to be able to set up lines consistently for this to work.

Third time I've watched this battle between titans. It's amazing. Maybe they'll add an update to combat this since they specifically didn't have defending because it caused games to stall, but I kinda hope not. The only way I feel would be fair to combat this would be is if after full margin time has elapsed the game would wait a certain number of seconds (it could even be psudorandom) and give all players still alive 1 garbage line regardless of if there is anything in their queue or not and regardless of if they cleared any lines or not, then after another period of time another garbage line... after a few garbage lines it starts sending them twice as fast or two at a time, and so on increasing the amount of forced garbage at one or decreasing the duration between forced garbage, to a maximum/minimum of 12 forced lines at once or 1 garbage line per second.
@Stratelier
@Stratelier 4 жыл бұрын
I remember in Tetris Ultimate, in competitive matches (AI or PVP) after a certain limit incoming garbage becomes permanent (a full line with no gaps and doesn't clear). I actually sort of hated it, but on the other hand I understand the benefit to having a hard time limit on some formats.

As someone who doesn't fully understand the mechanics of T99, amemiya stalling really does look like a lame/broken strategy. He's at a badge disadvantage, and if not for the single misdrop, he might have held out indefinitely.
@koishi5935
@koishi5935 4 жыл бұрын
It only looks so broken IMO because amemiya does it so well. The thing with long drawn out stalling is you have to make near perfect use out of every one of your pieces. If you make one wrong move, you will die.
@ThatLazyyGuy
@ThatLazyyGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Koishi well put. It’s a lot harder than he makes it look. It looks lame and cheap because Amemiya is just so good and consistent at the game, but if it was easy then everyone would be able to do what he does.

Tbh, I watched the whole video just to see amemiya stalling. It's does not seem lame or broken for me because only the best players in the world can pull it off like that. I think it is far more impressive to watch someone stalling like that, than the usual tetris99 gameplay.

Wonder if you could train a neural network to play aggressively like Doremy or defensively like Amemiya, not sure if it could be trained to use adaptive strategies, e.g. switching from 4w chaining to chaining t-spins, or straight up stalling, etc.

I don't know about a neural network, though probably with enough data, but there's zetris that can switch between tetrises, t-spins, 4-wide, and all clears though not stalling. I believe zetris was made with purely algorithms.

The original POV was in recommended and it led me here. What does it mean to stall out the game? I see him doing the flips back and forth, but what's the point? To make the opponent just leave?
@ErcPeace
@ErcPeace 4 жыл бұрын
I dont play tetris 99 but the general idea is, as the game (timer) progresses, the time you have to maneuver the pieces and place them shortens. However, by abusing a game mechanic it allows you to stay on one piece longer and stall the piece from dropping. If we look at Doremy's screen, you can see a relentless attack, if Amemiya tried to play a similar style game, then he would get out damage (?) by the badge difference. From what i can see. Amemiya began using the flips back and forth to stall the game and limit the amount of attacks from Doremy (i'm not sure what the maximum attack is as i dont play this version) because of the badge difference (giving Doremy an advantage on offense). By carefully clearing lines, Amemiya can reset the blocks from attacking him as well as continuing to limit the attacks from Doremy. There is also a slight chance that Doremy can make a mistake that leads to a loss as well. If you watched till the end, Amemiya made a mistake which led to the attack blocks going through and the immediately another set of attack blocks (whatever the max is because of the relentless attacks) which led to him losing.

Some numbers don’t seem to add up. I wonder why? At 27:12 Amemiya sends 4 lines of garbage, Doremy receives 12. Same at 27:19, Amemiya sends 1 line, Doremy receives 12. Does Tetris 99 multiply the garbage when a game goes on for a long time?? 🤔

So just like in Panel de Pon, letting your board get too low in high level play is asking for trouble. I've had a few matches of Panel de Pon with my sister that go over 10 minutes, at which point we both just quit by mutual consent and declare ourselves both winners. I never thought that could happen with Tetris, much less matches that go for more than 20 minutes.
@Poglavnit_Pferdefuhrer

I've been in a couple hour long Tetrinet matches, extremely funny. Tetrinet has these power up blocks that give different effects ON TOP OF the standard garbage combos, like block(q)uake reshuffles the entire board, (c)lear wipes out a single line somewhere, (r)andom just removes 3 or so blocks from different spots, and imo the nastiest b(o)mb causes *all o blocks on the other field to explode* leaving 9 square gaps and the "shrapnel" pieces floating in midair. If you try to avoid it by playing high, the unused shrapnel are converted into garbage lines. Anyway in very early versions of the game it was possible for glitch powerups to get "stuck" after the 11th minute and the same block would ALWAYS spawn at that area. Had that happen with quakes a few times. What made them last so long is a quake _isn't ALWAYS negative_ it can sometimes leave you with perfect T-spin setups which is what kept happening. Entertaining as hell game, and so hectic 😂
