The fabulous Mrs. Lessing¡ What a joy and privilege was spending a holiday with her and a great Sufi teacher, Omar Ali Shah, in Assisi, Italy in 1969. She was incredibly kind and unpretencious, taking care of some common friends newborn baby, every afternoon under the trees¡

“Sufism is the Core of Islam,” (which many provincially raised Muslims have forgotten about from their own mother-civilizations of tolerance and love, empathy, and interconnected ness with Divine. Karen Armstrong also brings up this point in her historical books as Doris Lessing. 🌴♥️ Too many provincial leaders using the names of Islam or Christianity, Muhammad or Jesus, peace be upon them, only present the patriarchal, patronizing aspects of their religions, (again) being manipulated for their own human-power politics rather than quiet Faith of submission of one’s egos/emotions to God Almighty. Civilizations have brought forth, through Divine Mercy, both Mercy and the Wrath of God, all aspects of His Majesty’s Order upon the universe from which we can learn rather than suppress. (Appreciate this video for remembering Doris Lessing and Shah). “To learn how to learn…and everything is unexpected.” (Alhumdullilah/Hallelujah:)

I wonder if it could be said that Doris Lessing was a Muslim. This really does sound like 1971 and is refreshing for that reason.

"Muslim" is just another word. She was in touch with the Reality behind that.

Very good.But just one point: Sufic activity need not depend upon a teacher.In fact,there is danger in depending upon a teacher.We cannot know from the outset whether the encountered teacher is suitable for us or not.I was told by a genuine Muslim Sufi that a simple,daily exercise done daily for just 10 mins. was enough to play out the processes of Sufism in one's life in their entirety.He said that very often,teachers make us dependant upon them.

@Sanjit Agnihotri - Imagine you want to be a medical practitioner, a medical doctor: is it enough to self teach yourself for 10 minutes daily, no need for qualified teachers and proper environment? As above, so below. As true for outward study, so it is for inner study. As for finding suitable teacher, you have to be, first and foremost, a suitable student. Like calls to like. A suitable teacher WILL find a suitable student, not the other way round.

A simple daily exercise lasting 10 minutes? Defecating should suffice. In the act, you get a firsthand experience of the kind of natural process you, as organism, are. Whether you admit it or not, every moment of every day the processes of existence are playing out. Call is Sufism if you like. But they're there even if Sufism is dead. Even behind mystifying confusions such as hate, the same processes of existence that give rise to the "completed man" are at work.

How do you know he was genuine? I do not think there are any simple daily exercises for that, according to what I have read.

as a westerner I feel its all to easy to simply folliw the external franework if relgeous belief be it any of the Abrahamic beliefs. To complicate matters tge ewst has a materialistic distraction. Im always looking for a souritual connection but rarely find it

I'm not surprised at Shah's cutesy, self-congratulatory. aren't-I-clever style of "teaching". And he himself would provide a good analysis of why it was so disarmingly effective with the British mentality. But I have to admit that I wouldn't have thought you could teach other people to adopt it . . . as Lessing has done.
