For the past few months I've been hearing a rumor that the old and out of use track to the Certainteed factory in Norwood, MA may be reactivated/restored. Last used sometime in 2021 the line was sparingly used then but only a short time before was used to bring raw materials in and send finished shingles out. The track was out of service already but then a truck hit the Morse St. overhead bridge, pushing it off its abutments. As a result of that a crane was brought in and lifted the bridge off the abutments and placed it on the tracks aside the under grade road. Even after the bridge was removed the rumor persisted and word is now that the bridge will be put back but raised to allow lager vehicles to pass under. This would allow service to be restored but whether it will actually happen is yet to be seen. This video follows the almost 2 mile spur from Norwood Central Station down to the Certainteed plant and end of track, showing current conditions with a focus on the Morse St. bridge. Stay tuned to see if this track is put to use.

Thanks for watching! This part of New England historically hosted one of the most dense rail systems so there's so many out of use tracks around. Now imagine all these tracks plus what we once had years ago! I could be filming videos like this for years if I decided to cover the long gone lines.

From the amount of raw materials and product on site, I’d say it would be an excellent customer for the railroad. It would be very interesting to know if rail service has been requested by Certainteed or as a result if railroad outreach to a potential customer. Seems more than justified to put public funds into the reconstruction as it would take a substantial number of trucks off the road.

If I had to guess I would say Certainteed wants it. They had service until 2021 or so until the track was taken out of service so it’s probably them waiting on it to come back. Perhaps they could apply for IRAP for the work.

Years ago, this use to be Bird Shingles, a very big industry which employed a lot around the area (when they 1st made shingles). Around the area there are a lot of parks and cultural named after the Bird family. This East Walpole Branch (that's what it was called when I worked it) stopped at East St. bridge, which was before my time. (But you can see it use to go to Walpole Junction at one time) Hollingsworth and Vose was the last customer, had to use a run-around to deliver to both, I see it is still there. I still live in the area, and always check if the tracks are still there. They are!

Nice video! Up here in Wisconsin, we have a few subdivisions that are out of service, they were way worse than this spur, the tracks are badly rusty, flowers and weeds growing every summer, but the subdivision I live near is getting back in service, it will take a long time due to bridge washouts and other stuff.

CSX served it in the past with the L001 crew out of Readville yard. I assume they’d serve it again however there’s a rumor mass coastal wants to buy the track east of Walpole on the Framingham secondary so idk if they’d serve it out of there I don’t know for sure

I think it's safe to remove the low bridge signs at this point. 🤣 However before the accident (11:13 - 11:22), perhaps they could have done with a couple of these signs plastered to either side of the bridge. Perhaps that would have averted this issue.

Signs or lights all foolishness. That bridge was hit twice a year since I worked when this was the Wrentham Branch which when times were good joined the Shoreline at Attleboro. BX-4 came out of the Boston Freight Terminal and met up with another local out of Northrup Avenue at East Walpole to service Bird, Masslite and a chicken feed track in Wrentham. Bird had sidings for a corrugated box, roofing and an oilcloth siding, if anyone remembers oilcloth. Also Bird had a subway track that went under the box shop. Hollingsworth and Vose did a chemical business that was served over a relatively high bridge off the runaround at the roofing runaround. The bridge that kept getting clipped was at the station named Morrills. There was a lumber company and Sun Ink on the stub at Morrills. Also, there was a small yard beyond the freighthouse at East Walpole where hoppers were stored for loading at Masslite in Wrentham. The next station leaving East Walpole for Attleboro was Cedar then Pondville for the hospital. It occurs to me that missing bridges foil many revitalization plans like the Swing Bridge in Tiverton. BX-4 was a moneymaker for the company and the crew. Also I noticed the track for the Valley at Norwood Central......gone. It was a good thing for the company that at the time 16 hour day was in effect. Hand motions too, makes me smile that young men think they know railroad workings.

On the damage, if a truck caused the damage, then the trucking company must pay for it. It’s only fair. If the shoe was on the other foot, then you can absolutely bet that the railroad would have to pay! It’s as simple as that.

There is a great image showing why Ewok needs to be saved and updated, when you see all those tractor trailers and those rows of shingles at the plant and then figure all those trucks on the roads around Norwood and Walpole thar would be eliminated through upgraded rail service . The cape should take notes as the roads down there are just as congested.
