All world class skaters of today need to watch this - this is absolutely lovely and so well put together and wonderfully delivered. The layback is a 6.0 a million times over and the top girls today are nowhere close. The position of her spins - gosh I love her back in the sitspins, no one today is that good. Excellent footwork sequence, nice height on double axel and flying sitspin too. Dorothy - you are truly a classic. Thanks northtexasdude for posting this! :-)

Scott.I met him in 1980 when he was not famous,he was very friendly.I met him again in the early 1990's at the Sun Valley lodge.He was alone,I was the only person asking politely for an autograph.He was rude and gave me a glare.

My cousins asked Scott for his autograph as he was walking though a sports plex center after the Ice Capa festival ( not performing) and he brushed one of my cousins out of his way as he quickly passed by. Two little girls 8 and 10 yrs old .

Amazingly, Ms. Hamill used to say in interviews that when she began competing, her main onus was finding a style that would distinguish her from the more refined Peggy Fleming, because she would never look like Fleming- as if Peggy were the prettier, more popular sister. Can you imagine? And here, at 19, with her natural sweetness, sporty haircut, charming nearsightedness and killer figure, she makes us fall in love with her all on her own merit. As Dick Button would say, "good girl."

Back then they may have only to complete a single axel but there edging was so much more beautiful than the skaters today who are not required to do school figures. Also, watch Ms. Hamill's spins, she does not travel. The skaters today are all over the place but then we do not have Mr. Lussi to train them.

@mlc2005 Triple jumps werent common until 1977 and 1978. Dorothy brought superior speed, carriage, unique spins (Hamill Camel) and musicality. She did improve the sport, especially inspriing people like Kristi Yamaguchi and a generation of skaters!

The double flip as part of the combo was a requirement in the short then. There were very few men back then who could even do a double flip-triple toe combination, let alone any women. In Lynn's day you were allowed to atleast do a double axel-double toe in the short which some skaters did, and Dorothy I am sure would have as well. As for triples she did them in practice, she did not lose a single long program from 74-76 though so there was no indication from judges she needed them.

Actually, at the 1975 Nationals she lost both the short and long programs, coming in 3rd in both to Wendy Burge and Barbie Smith, but she kept her title due to figures.

It's amazing how far this sport has come. Back then you could win Worlds with just doubles. Now kids have to waste their entire childhood to practicing too many hours, just to make it to the Olympics where the field is flooded with other athletes who have done the same thing.

Oh how true malfada22. Is it not just so typical of a younger skater like TheFigrs8er to make a comment based solely on what jumps a skater does? The skaters of today have no edges or finesse compared to the skaters of yesteryear. I think they should rename the sport "Ice Jumping", because that is all it is. I never thought I would say the following: BRING BACK FIGURES!

oh my goodness, the rules back then were no where NEAR as strict as they are in today's figure skating world! only a single axel required at Worlds? wow, i wish that was like this now. But it's obviously because they didn't have the most progressed figure skates back then.
@LORDADONIS35

It was the rules by the ISU that were the problem. ISU wanted women to only do single and double-double combinations to distinguish between mens and women figure skating. It is well known that Dorthy used to practice and was capable of triple jumps, but was discouraged by her coach Carlo Fassi from doing them because judges would not look too kindly on that kind of technicality. The East German women were also capable of triple jumps but refrained from doing them to keep favor of international judges.
@waynehentley4332
@waynehentley4332 2 жыл бұрын
@@LORDADONIS35 Not true!! You made that all up! Well known by whom? Only you? Errath of East Germany did 3T and 3S in her FS! DeLeew of the Netherlands had a 3T. Fassi himself said Dorothy couldn't do triples! She couldn't rotate fast enough!
@waynehentley4332
@waynehentley4332 2 жыл бұрын
Nonsense! She was a skater of her time. Skating has progressed since the 70s. The top skaters didn't all start doing triples till 1977 and they only attempted one or two. By 1981/82, skaters who couldn't do at least one consistent triple were 'encouraged' to retire. After Elaine Zayak did three 3T and three 3S in 1982, the Zayak rule was instituted. A triple could only be repeated once and only in combination.

How was Dorothy able to get away with her seemingly low technical content. I mean, Janet Lynn came before her and was doing harder combos and moves, and I read that Hamill was the last Olympic/world champ never to do even a single triple. I admire her talent, but she could have pushed the sport further a bit more than she did. She didn't advance it like some of the other legends.

I think back then if you were winning free skating with what you did, you didnt bother to do more. It is why Robin Cousins never tried anything harder than a triple loop in competition despite that he probably could have done more.
@aspenrobinson8797
@aspenrobinson8797 4 жыл бұрын
@@phillipphillps9719 same as Michelle Kwan, she didn't really push for triple -triple combination at all when everyone had them in their program. Shd slways won by playing if safe while others pushed the envelope and fell.
@waynehentley4332
@waynehentley4332 2 жыл бұрын
It's considered low today but wasn't low over 40 years ago. The hardest required jump was a double Axel. Janet took the triple out of her program because it wasn't consistent enough. Errath of East Germany had the 3T and 3S but she wasn't always consistent. De Leeuw had the 3T. Very few women had a triple! It simply wasn't required. Plus they had to focus on their school figures which were 30 % of the final score.
@northsmoket
@northsmoket 8 ай бұрын
in 1976, and somewhat up until the abolishment of figures ,the first thing judged was speed and how well a skater performed, how well it was skated. ladies triples came fast and furious after dorothy., and they were and are usually agonizingly telegraphed with serious damage to artistic integrity.
