@Dominic 1998, that Dortmund team was arguably better than the Juventus team player for player, and they had an excellent coach. (It was definitely better equipped to win than the one in 2013, which had a lot less top-level experience.) The Juventus team had some average players such as Porrini, Juliano, Di Livio, Jugovic, Boksic, Pesotto and Amoruso. That is too many to be viewed as favourites. Congratulations to Dortmund.

Dominic 1998 yeah Dominic,your step brother is telling you the truth..I was born in 1982 and confirm you that Borussia Dortmund was the “sparring partner” (that said,when a team reach the final cannot be that bad) but i disagree regarding the fact that Juventus wasn’t strong enough..during that season guys won the European Supercup 6-1, won Intercontinental Cup(so world champion not a punchline like these days) against River Plate,slapped Ajax on Semi-Final 4-1(and 1st leg was huuuuge 2-1 but could have been 5) , in domestic league demolished 6-1 Milan in their own stadium..so,the team,was at his prime.. The thing i don’t get is that you can change coach and players but Vecchia Signora got a big issue with this competition,you figure out a last stage videogame?Fine,team melts away as the driven snow..I don’t wanna deny nothing to BVB but they won this cup and they still not know why..Paulo Sousa and Andy Moëller were dump (maybe too fast) while Jurgen Kohler and Julio Cesar are both loved in here ..4 former players on 11,not peanuts...

Zidane didn't really come good as a pro until 1998. He was talked about as someone with huge potential but disappointed hugely in the 96 Euros. The World Cup in 1998 he transformed and never looked back.

You people who never watched these games or saw him play at the time are clueless about football. He was Juve's best player for that 3-4 year period in the late 90s and won everything with them except the Champions League, which was just a matter of luck. So, Zidane ACTUALLY was great from '96 and not '98 like you say.

@@ismailmiah1446 No, Nedved was not better for Juve. He was just there for longer. Zidane was Juve's key player for 5 years, Nedved was never Juve's key player apart from maybe one season. Zizou also won more individual awards than Nedved did in world football.

He’s completely underrated in Germany. He has won every major title there is and played a crucial part in all of them except the World Cup. You can make the argument that he’s the best offensive midfielder in German history

Fun Fact: Borussia Dortmund's glory in 1997 was the last time the finalist immediately won the competition after reaching the final for the first attempt. Since then, no debutants have repeated this feat (like Valencia, Manchester City, Monaco).

Another fact : since Dortmund, so since 25 years, only one team won his first CL, Chelsea, who indeed lost once in final before they do that The ten years before Dortmund's success, Barcelona, Marseille, PSV, Porto, Red Star and Steaua Bucarest did it ! Since Bosman's law, the UCL is "VIP reserved"

The German commentary of this game in 1997 was Marcel Reif. He said after the final whistle that Juventus would get over this defeat, as it is likely that Turin would win this trophy in the next few years again. At the time it did look as though Juventus were in a golden age that was set to last... instead we got to the final of 1998 to lose again, after which there was a long decline. I am convinced that the losses of Jugovic and Vieri in 1997 and the arrival of Inzaghi marked the beginning of the rot. Ancelotti's appointment worsened the situation even further. Even the Juventus team that has won Serie A all the time in recent years and reached 2 CL finals (2015,17) is nowhere as good as the squad of 1996-97.

Yes same here. I’ve been a Bayern fan since 1991, but I was so happy for Dortmund for winning it, I even went on and bought their Jersey before the final match to cheer for them, I still have that jersey. I also wish they become more stable now, Dortmund’s stability is actually important for Bayern.

@@msb8792 I agree I'm not a Bayern fan but I love Bundesliga Bayern needs challengers The German football could only become better with challengers for Bayern I know many people who dont follow Bundesliga because of Bayern's domination Bayern said that they will not give up the Bundesliga for a Super League, and that's great; and they totally deserved their title But now, the Bundesliga must think of a way to stop Bayern's domination, like with a more fair TV rights distribution, because if not, it's just absurd. Bundesliga is pointless, to have so many great clubs with so many fans, so hard competition even in B2, if a team won 10 times in a row !!!

That has nothing to do with luck. In 1983 and 1997 they were arguably the best side in Europe, and in both occasions they walked on the pitch thinking that they had already won. All Juve's supporters felt the same: they didn't even contemplate a hard game ahead. And each time they got shocked by the Germans scoring early in the game, and couldn't recover. They only had themselves to blame. In the other 5 finals they were the weaker side against Real (the latter final), Ajax and Barcelona. About equal to Real (1998) and Ac Milan. In these cases we could say they were a bit unlucky, although they didn't do much to win the games.

BVB...as of now still the last club to win the CL in their first final! Since then 8 teams have all failed to win on their first final (2000: Valencia, 2002: Bayer Leverkusen, 2004: Monaco, 2006: Arsenal, 2008: Chelsea, 2019: Spurs, 2020: PSG, 2021: ManC)

I remember this. As someone growing up in Berlin. I loved this. That Dortmund Team was great. That Lars Ricken goal. I knew the game was won. Celebration started. What an experience. But Ottmar Hitzfeld was also an absolute brilliant coach.

The first Coach and i think still the only Coach who won the Champions League twice with two different teams from the same Leauge. (BvB and FC Bayern). This is a really insane feat.
