Let me tell you I waisted a lot of time trying to install Catalina on my MacBook Pro mid 2010 (7,1) using Open Core Legacy Patcher (OCLP), but it is extremely slow and unstable compared with your solution. You are allowing lots of people to continue using their old Macbooks without wasting money and resources that not everyone is able to afford, and that's a noble labor! Thank you again.

Patches to get around this may be available in the future.

First and foremost, a trillion thanks for the extraordinary guidance-truly, you've worked wonders. Managing to upgrade to Catalina on my vintage Mac Pro 5.1 was nothing short of a revelation. I've yet to encounter a single hiccup; it's smooth sailing all the way and astoundingly, it's outperforming High Sierra. Monumental kudos to you for that! The tutorial you provided was nothing short of a masterclass. One attempt was all it took to get everything in order. It’s absurd how Apple overlooks the potential of older models when, clearly, these systems are perfectly capable of running more modern software. As someone knee-deep in 3D modeling and web development, I can definitively say their 'incompatibility' claim holds no water. So, really, an ocean of gratitude for dispelling that myth and for making my work and life remarkably easier and better.

Because of the lockdown as 80 years old the retired I got a Mac Mini 4.1 From I have been searching You Tube for the best solution. Lo and behold first I tried Mojave but was not successful. Then I Catalina and I got. Thank you very much for updating my Mac mini.

April 2023 - Just used this to get Catalina 10.15.7 on a MacBook Pro mid-2009 (5,3) that I was given. Worked just like in your video! Everything works...Wifi, sound, ethernet, brightness, webcam, etc.. I have the model with the GeForce 9600M video chip, and even Maps appears to work OK.

Really neat patcher & fantastic work! This is so neat. Had some hiccups but overall it’s worked pretty well. The patcher did fail on what I thought was supported hardware (late 2008 Alu MB) so I installed in a 2009 MBP and all went well there so I swapped the SSD back into my 08 and the MB booted right up. Just one weird quirk is the Wi-Fi dies when woken from sleep. I read that the fix is to reinstall the post installer patch.

Thank you so much! It worked like a charm for me with Catalina 10.15.7 installation (had El Capitan previously). MacBook Pro mid-2009, 13 inch, model 5,5. A few notes: - when downloading OS Catalina installer using your tool, an error popped up several times saying something like 'error when downloading from the Apple servers. Try again'. But when I clicked 'start download' again, it did not in fact start anew, but continued from where it stopped before. After doing that several times, it successfully finished, so no worries; - when formatting a flash drive, I had to not only select OS X Extended, but also GUID partition table. Not sure what that is, but it worked; - to those who don't understand, when you're at the step at 14:00 in the vid, your drive has only 1 volume, and you select 'erase', it will delete all your files and everything on your computer. So copy all your important files, or use Time Machine or something; Everything feels quite snappy on an SSD with 8GBs of Ram, even on this 13 y.o. computer. Now I plan to divide the drive into more parts and install Linux on it. My future work requires familiarity with Linux. If only I could find a guide this good on how to do that :) EDIT 4 days later: Finally managed to install Ubuntu for dual boot with Catalina. It was hard, I think it has something to do with things called EFI, GRUB on Linux and other things I have no deep understanding of. Ubuntu was somehow overriding Catalina's boot process when I installed it after Catalina. I finally managed to do it by partitioning the disk into 4 parts: 1 APFS container and 3 MS-DOS partitions for Ubuntu, SWAP and EFI. Had to do it from Recovery mode, USB with Catalina was very useful. Then I installed Ubuntu onto those MS-DOS partitions, and after that installed Catalina. Now disktutil list command in Terminal says that dev/disk0 is divided into: TYPE NAME IDENTIFIER SIZE Comment: EFI EFI disk0s1 200MB Original EFI partition I did not create, prob. Catalina installer did it, as it knows what to do :) Apple_APFS Container disk1 disk0s2 80GB APFS container with Catalina and Catalina - Data Microsoft Basic Data disk0s3 150GB Ubuntu partition Microsoft Basic Data disk0s4 8.8GB SWAP partition for Ubuntu EFI EFILINUX disk0s5 1GB EFI partition And installed rEFInd tool that allows choosing between Linux and MacOS without holding the Option key every time. It was rather hard but fun!

Update: ​Unfortunately i have been experiencing many stability issues with "Catalina". I tried installing "Mojave" too (thought maybe it would be better and more stable) but still similar issues. Simple tasks like using Microsoft Office are hard to use with stability. MS Office for example keeps crashing or cannot write (stops responding on my typing). The computer needs restart. No serious issues when exploring the internet though (I'm using Chrome & Mozilla Firefox). It is worth upgrading if you need a machine to mainly surf the net and be able to visit any website. Congratulations on your magnificent work! I managed to install Mac OS Catalina on a MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2009! Haven't checked everything yet but so far seems very good! Your video tutorial is VERY helpful and easy to follow (if someone has basic knowledge of computing). Thank you very much for sharing (and if i have more feedback i will keep you up to date!) Just want to share my observation with this great tool: I got the "installer damaged" message multiple times, until I realized I pulled the TM-disk out of the Mac every time I switched from one OS to another. After letting the TM-disk in place (between reboots) the Catalina install went on smoothly. This might help somebody having the same problem. Many thanks to dosdude1!

1000 thanks! I got Catalina on an iMac 2008 first half year. Other patchers could not even give me High Sierra. It took a long time, and the iMac stalled after two hours, very, very hot. Next day I chose EFI boot with the Catalina logo, and when I came to the installation screen I chose post patchers. And then it worked after half an hour. Fantastic! My iMc has 4 GB of RAM and it works fine. A donation is on the way to you and you team.

I’m stuck . After installing on the drive it keeps bringing me back to OS utilities and it won’t boot off of the drive converted to apfs

Just finished installing on a 2009 Mac mini and two 2011 MacBook airs. This has got to be the easiest and best software I have used in a long time. BTW you had a step to format or convert the drive to APFS since 10.15 requires it but your software or Mac OS 10.15 converted my drive during the install process so this step might not be required in all cases. Big THANK YOU for the time and effort you placed in both this and the High Sierra patch.

Thanks for a fantastic, extremely detailed video walkthrough of this process. You've saved me (and obviously many others) a ton of money by helping us get our old systems up to date and working again! My Late 2011 MacBook Pro is running like a dream with Catalina now (after some HW upgrades found on another KZfaqr's channel). I now have a 1TB HD and 16GB of RAM in my MBPro, and it's running better than it did when I got it brand new. All the best!

Thanks! I tried with many videos, tutorials, OS, boots and others but finally this worked. The Patch worked in iMac 21.5 inch, Mid 2010 upgraded from HDD 500 GB to SSD 1 TB and from 4 to 12 GB RAM. The old mechanical HDD eventually died but I will try to recover that info later on. Keep up the good work.

Awesome tutorial Thanks a lot For those having issues installing via High Sierra on an iMac late 2009, 1. Downgrade to El Capitan 2. Use the patcher to create a bootable Usb stick 3. Install the APFS package 4. Follow the Instruction.

After reading many comments; I would highly suggest that prior to accomplishing the patch or any major change to a system. 1st, get an external drive (SSD or HDD) and a USB drive enclosure. 2nd, format the drive with APFS using disk utilities found in the Applications Folder. 3rd, download a copy of Carbon Copy (free when using the trial method) (bombich.com) and 4th, install it on your Mac. Once installed, 5th, connect the external drive to the Mac. 6th, open Carbon Copy, click on Trial, wait a few seconds and then choose the source drive and then the destination drive, (you may have to browse) which is the external drive. 7th, initiate the sequence and once completed you will have an exact bootable drive with your current system. 8th, then If something goes wrong with the patch or you miss a step or did not follow instructions as per the video. 9th, you can boot into the external drive by selecting it at the boot prompt using the option key. Once booted into the external drive, 10th, use Carbon Copy and reverse the procedure and reinstall your previous OS back.

It worked perfectly installing Catalina 10.15.3 on my 13" MacBook Air mid 2011 (high-end Intel Core i7 with 4GB and Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB). DOSDUDE1 is awesome. Thanks.

Just a follow up: I retried this making sure that after the installation started, the system rebooted into the internal drive EFI boot, which ran the script, d then seemed to get hung up with the progress bar full. I shut it down then restarted w/option key pressed and again booted into the same EFI (the one with the picture of a drive, not the one with the logo for the OS) and after a long white screen it booted into the set-up. So thank you Collin. I don't know if my manually choosing the boot menu made a difference, but I got the idea from Action Retro, where he had to do this with open core legacy on an old macbook.

amazing tutorial - i was able to patch the Catalina OSX over the High Sierra on my Mac Book Pro 17', from 2010, the unibody model. very pleased with the result. i am able to install some apps which were not supported with the High Sierra anymore. Love the dark mode too. Sometimes my mouse cursor disappearing for few moments.bit slower boot , even SSD, i was not able to get into the Recovery Mode, BUT overall - i am very happy, thanks mate.this post is highly appreciated

I have an old late 2008 aluminum macbook that I've been using non stop since it was new. Currently it's my go to for configuring and debuging network devices (routers, etc) because of it has a built in ethernet port. The lack of up-to-date Chrome browser, or any other browser for that matter, was becoming a problem and I was considering installing Linux on it. Now it's running Catalina, has the latest Chrome, and carries on providing service. Many thanks. Next in line will be my trusty 27" 2010 iMac, which I'll do after Google drops support for High Sierra and that also starts turning into a problem.

Firstly Thank you. I have installed Catalina on my 2010 MacBook Pro 13" with 2TB SSD and 16GB DDR3 Ram without losing any data. I used external drive as recommended in video) Also using the same installer downloaded for my MacBook Pro I also installed on my iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) 3.06 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i3 IMPORTANTLY WITH A "ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB " This is the only original graphics card on a 11,x iMac which I understand, from these instructions, will run this patch. I have not lost any data on either Mac as I followed the instructions and changed my SSD main drive to apfs format (after booting from the external drive on which I'd installed an external drive plugged in via USB. You have to unmount the SSD main drive before converting with Edit in menu. Just follow the instructions step by step. It's also helpful to have access to KZfaq on another device to follow instructions during rebooting etc. Don't rush if you're not experienced at this, I was a newbie doing this. So pleased and grateful. The king of outdated Macs has struck again! :) Very happy to see this, as I way eyeing a MacBook7,1 maschine. Those are super pretty imo! Anyway - I do have a question, well, two actually. 1. Why use "Reinstall" instead of the normal installation method? Are the procedures of these two different? From what I would guess, "reinstall" would basically write the basesystem and the other files from the installation package ontop to the disk, where the normal install would check for an existing setup and delete some stuff first. Is that assumption right, or is there a different reason for this specific aproach? 2. You mentioned that you wrote an APFS "bootloader", so to say. Since this has to be an EFI program at this stage, what toolchain did you use to compile it and how exactly does it mount an APFS volume? As far as I know, APFS itself isn't exactly open source. I'd be very interested to see in how this bootloader worked. Plus, can this be patched into a vanilla install? I have a bunch of prepared install medias prepared already - one for each milestone, almost... So I would just use the post-patching tool to finish a job - but how can I attach the APFS bootloader?

I chose the rebooting usb, however I see the apple logo on my screen and it does not change. Please help me
