Larry Cedar performs his one-man stage adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND at the Sherry Theater, directed by Pamela Cedar. Dostoevsky's classic novel tells the story of a former civil servant who emerges from some forty years isolation to explain his theories on the human condition through vivid recollections of a distant past. The piece was awarded Best Solo Performance and Best Director awards at the NoHo Arts Fringe Festival. "Mr. Cedar astonishes with his intimate portrait of sad isolationism and astounds at his ability to hold an audience spellbound." - NoHo Arts Reviews

This is brilliant, an ingenius adaptation of the book. Mr.Cedar perfectly encapsulates the underground man, and the fact that this is all done from memory is just amazing. I actually liked this somehow more than the book, mr.Cedar is exactly how i imagines the character and then some. Dostoevsky would be proud.

This was incredible. It’s a sign of the times when something that required this amount of work and talent is not celebrated by more people. This could wake people up and change lives. People would much rather remain unconscious and delusional. In fact, nothing I’ve found is faster to enrage a friend or stranger than when I point out someone’s petty motivations for an action he or she believes is a virtuous one. Thanks for putting in all the work and I wish you’d tour the country doing this.

Larry, it's impossible to sufficiently describe how much my wife and I love your show. On Thursday of this week, I read the book. As a fellow actor who has also created and performed a one-man show, I was struck by the thought that someone may have attempted a one-man show of Underground since the book is a monologue. I whooped with glee when I found this video of your performance on KZfaq. So - on Thursday I read the book for the first time and was thunderstruck - Friday, last night, we watched your powerful performance . I wasn't sure if my wife would get into it, but she was instantly enthralled. I had given her a vague disclaimer about the text being rather existential in a general way. But she loved it. I loved it. From your first line, "I am a sick man - I am a spiteful man - I am an unattractive man" - I knew we would be watching something great. The simple decision of having those words come improvisationally to Fyodor's fictional stand-in grabbed me. I could instantly see this would be a spontaneous and unpredictable performance, and that the sardonic self-deprecating humor of the book would be on full display. And that's exactly what we saw. Never a disappointing moment. I was amazed every second by the continually brilliant acting and directing decisions. Thank you from the bottom of our theatre-loving hearts for the most worthwhile, pithy play we've seen in ages. Bravo infinity. --Randy Bowser author of KARLOFF the authorized one-man show about acting legend Boris Karloff

To be thanked in return makes for a rare and wonderful moment. Now my goal is to coax my wife into seeing your Kafka shows which I only discovered after going back to KZfaq to send you my unabashed fan letter. She was so drawn to your performance that convincing her should not be difficult. Long live Dostoyevski, Kafka - and Cedar! This is awesome!!!! Stunned with the performance. I can easily sense the passion for this story from the performance. I read this book 3 years back and wrote a 20 page essay filled with my thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes. I had marked this play in my watch list long back but just had a chance to watch this completely. I too started doing small videos (mostly as monologues or one act play format) from literature short stories a couple of years back. I can imagine the amount of hard work behind this. I'm just glad that I watched this today without further delay. It gives me loads of inspiration to convert classic literature into one act play format. Larry Cedar, please let me know if you are visiting Germany anytime soon. I'm an Indian (short story writer in one of the Indian regional languages + budding theatre actor) but temporarily settled in Germany due to work. I would love to talk and know more about your journey :)

The Burrow, The Hunger Artist, and Letter to My Father. All are available for viewing on KZfaq. Next up, The Trial, also by Kafka.

Initially, the concept of adapting this masterpiece into a solo play seemed very boring and dull.I mean who would spend 90 minutes watching a man just ramble about ?? But I decided to give it a try and for a single moment didn't get bored or couldn't stop watching this video.Brilliant acting. Very well done ! Additionally, i think dream of a ridiculous man would also make a fantastic adaptation

Wonderful! Amazingly interesting. Nothing like this on internet about "notes from underground". Unique and awesome. But what were your thoughts, why did you think of enacting the whole book? I know initially it would have been whether to do it or not do it. But what finally nudged you in a yes?
@LarryCedar
@LarryCedar 3 күн бұрын
Our presentation was intended to be an abbreviated adaptation, my sense being that as a theatrical presentation audiences would be much more receptive to a 90 minute presentation. I deliberately adapted the material in such a way as to focus on the more physically active aspects of the novel, i.e. those which leaned toward the more dramatic, as opposed to the more philosophical.

Thanks, Michael, for your kind words. The memorization is a challenging process, and one that simply involves going over the words again, and again, and again until I've etched them into my brain like deep tire tracks on a well traveled road. Only when I truly "own" the words, when they feel as though they are truly a part of me and practically my own thoughts, am I satisfied. Because only then do the words emerge spontaneously and without effort. Only then can I truly inhabit the character, i.e. as if the words were my very own. I am currently in the process of preparing to do all six of my adaptations; ORWELLIAN (George Orwell), Notes From the Underground (Dostoevsky), The Burrow, Letter to My Father, The Trial, and The Hunger Artist (Kafka) over the course of 2024. All the pieces total some 50,000 words and would take, if spoken back to back, some five and a half hours to perform. Rehearsing them all quickly each day takes about an hour and half. It takes great concentration and mental effort, but I'm almost to the point (after over 1000 recitations) where I feel I know them all. Together the collection of pieces will be called The ODK Cycle (Orwell, Dostoevsky, Kafka) so stay tuned for performance dates in the coming year. All the best, Larry Cedar
