Anti-mage has always looked so interesting, like everything about him makes it incredibly clear that his one defining trait is :drive. He is, from every aspect of his design, showing clear focus of purpose.

I appreciate how confident and unique Dota hero design is. It always lets me down a little when the community lets through and supports yet another hyper-anime design, of super sexualised stick & bone women or super visually-busy edgy warrior/assassin. Not every character has to be goofy goblin cute or traditionally sexy. Creatures can be creatures. From Dawnbreaker & Mars onwards the lead designer changed to one who came from a Disney/Pixar background and I was a little unsure, because I feel they didn't fully understand the general aesthetic of the hero pool. Like Mars' facial design doesn't gel with Zeus or the general roster, with that Disney training shining through. Marci still sticks out but I can forgive that because of source material adaptation. But Primal Beast was a return to proper form, he's a dinosaur that really blends in design-wise. Muerta is great. I'm excited to see how Puppetmaster looks ingame.

Great video! Dota 2 has some excellent designs. When I first saw the map itself (coming from DotA 1 & HoN) I was blown away. It was like a painting. And the hero designs are so, so good. They are so unique, unlike some other games I can think of :P And yes, I am totally on board with #1. One of the biggest glow-ups from the original, by far. My personal favorite might just be Shadow Fiend, because when Dota 2 had been announced, I speculated his design a lot, and drew many sketches that were almost exactly like what we ended up getting - other than being drawn worse, that is. So that one stands out in my mind. Of the newer heroes, I always thought Mars was really nicely designed. I can't quite explain it, but they just got him right.

Lifestealer is underrated. His base model is so awesome, I feel bad every time I see any cosmetics on him. He is the only character that feels like your unlocking an arcana when you take all the cosmetics off.

Invoker is my top 1, but Outside of the dota 2 heroes, i think aghanim has the best character design. Reading the lore and rubick's story and going through the description of his scepter he gave off like a serious or mad wizzard vibe, same as invoker. I really thought that if we ever get to see him he would look so badass and do some crazy shit. Well, when we did came he appears as this goofy looking creature with four arms and sounding like an entertainer rather than a mad wizzard. And honestly i love it! He is surprisingly likable. And he is filled with dad jokes. I love that valve subdued our expectations of him and flip it over our heads.

The lore of dota is S tier as well I recommend those who has not watched Slack's Loregasm videos to watch them rly nice, and the world of Dota itself is bonkers since everyone is a God and equal since a bear who just hits really fast can kill the primordial being which exploded the ancients.

My top 5 are: Hoodwink, Chaos Knight, Underlord (very underrated), Crystal Maiden and Silencer. Silencer already had the best Model in Warcraft 3 (Spellbreakers are damn based) and he looks just as amazing in Dota 2. Though with Skins, Queen of Pain, Doom and Ogre Magi are runner ups.

I think she's like a hobbit, feeling stuff with feet makes her more agile when climbing trees or the like. Kinda how when u wear thick gloves, u become less dexterous.

I switch to DOTA 2 from League after knowing the existence of Phoenix and Nyx. I know Anivia exists but I'm only comfortable playing her in ARAM cause I'm a support player. Playstyle aside, Phoenix to me has this kind of odd ethereal charm to it. I've never seen anyone designing a bird on fire... this FIRE!!! And you're right, Phoenix looks like what a mythical creature supposed to look like. Meanwhile Anivia, Volibear and Ornn are glorified beast acting as sentient God. I don't have a problem with it but it feels like League character design is too safe. It can be good but never exceptional. DOTA 2 is fucking hard and confusing after the innate/facets update. But I still love playing Phoenix cause I just love the design, the voice and the gameplay. Oh and Nyx too. I sometimes pick Nyx out of necessity but I love saying "Nyx, Nyx, Nyx" irl to imitate how it says in game😆

11:15 the nerubians from the Warcraft universe (which is what nyx is based on) do wear armor but that wasn’t the case in Warcraft 3 Also huskar has the best design since he is the most alpha hero in dota

Lifestealer's at 11 for me I think. His lore kicks ass but I think his design could be a bit more connected to it. I remember seeing a set on the workshop called "Escape from Devarque" where he has his "master's" body grafted onto him and I think it does a better job of encapsulating his lore better than his current design.

The voice lines are also a huge factor as to if I like a hero or not. Half the reason I play Bristleback and Razor is because of their voice lines.

Oracle definitely has a unique and interesting design, but I never really managed to find it appealing. Just a matter of taste in the face of genuinely good character design.

Me when Rubick is Number 1 and you don’t even do so because of his lore as Aghanim’s (The Guy Every Hero wants to purchase the Staff and Shard from, even Rubick Himself) Son. Possibly Bastard/Unwanted Son.

Yeah Aghanim's characterization kinda ruined Rubick's lore for me a bit. Rubick is an exception when it comes to my normal criteria. His personality and design are wicked sick. I just feel iffy about his dad being this weird goofball with the personality of a middle-aged high school sports coach.

@@wilsonsticks For me, its a Juxtaposition (Not Phantom Lancer’s ULT, screw Lancer, Chaos Knight is more based) of what we thought he was considering everyone not only benefits from his Scepter and Shard Now, but just about every Hero has a unique line for getting the Scepter, even Rubick wants it.

@@eagleye2893 Yes, Aghanim's character was definitely a subversion of expectations. But I think they could've taken it in a different way than just Cave Johnson but in Dota (no hate to Cave Johnson, I love him). I personally would have made Aghanim a cynical recluse who has no idea how much influence he and on the world, and is quite annoyed by the fact that everyone covets his Scepter

idk man, you should do the same as the Arcana, though the newer arcanas come with "sets", there are still old arcanas that are visually glorious and you don't want to switch back to the default hero, PA and CM for example

that's why dota has a lot of different otherworldly design because of the lore also, earth or the current world is not their home but they were drawn by the ancients power and thus that world became the hotspot for countless and endless repeating wars and is their "new home" of some sort Rubick is aso my fav design! We may yet see that theme return. Who knows what Valve has got cooking up after Ringmaster. I think the most egregious form of this was when they updated the default HUD in 2016. The old one had so much personality and now it's just all grey, blocky, and corporate

Nope, and that's why I respect Valve. They're not gonna fill their game with anime characters or generic archetypes. This makes the game not seem soulless, and opens up so many avenues for really good character design. So instead of the schlock that League of Legends puts out 6 times a year, we have characters like Muerta, and Razor, and Leshrac; characters free of a stereotypical archetype and are allowed to be their own thing. Valve has shown to be really competent with their characters as far back as Half-Life 2.
